From my experience, I don't see either the poke or slap being more effective. They both do a good job of forcing ground balls. I like my long stick defenders to use a combination--poke, poke, slap; then poke, slap, slap. Mix it up to catch the offender off-guard and get the ball on the ground. And always remember that the most important part of defending is footwork, so make sure you are in good position before you start checking! Hope that helps!
@Desai1614 i play the same thing.. its a very good tactic to poke check the bottom hand of the middy or attack. also, poke them in the gut. it is very annoying. do it as hard as you can, there will be no penalty
In truth, you should always be checking (poke or slap) at the stick or gloves. So, yes, poking at the hands is a good idea. You will rarely see a slash called for pokes that hit the torso because they don't hurt (much!) and it happens all the time--even when you are aiming for the stick/gloves. Just keep your pokes low so you don't hit the helmet! That will always get you a trip to the penalty box!
I play longstick defense, and I dont know if the slap or the poke is more effective???
Any advice...?
