And I agree with you about the more mature themes, not referring to inappropriate content, but instead immersive plot and multi-faceted story. Children aren't able to pick up on these subtle themes and identify them, but they do get the feeling that the show is cooler than other, shallower series. This is why The Last Airbender is enjoyable for adults AND children.

A series of comics is being released called "The Promise" that details some of the events that take place after Sozin's Comet. Part 1 was released recently, and parts 2 and 3 have yet to be released. I'm not sure, but I have a hunch that the plot about Zuko's mother might be addressed in the series. Not only that, but I can see that they are leading into the plot and story of Legend of Korra with some of the events in The Promise.

There is a Comic, The Promise Part one coming out end of January that has their continued story. It is supposed to be three parts, so maybe that was why they put the jail scene. Maybe It'll show what happened to his mother. Also, I loved laughing at Ozai in his jail cell :P
