can anyone give me some info or informed speculation as to what kind of effects are, uh, in effect for the little vocal solo break @ 2:07 ? Warm compression with cake icing? minimal rapid flange? the sound really sticks with me, and i'd appreciate a clue...thanks in advance!
@schtickkicker It sounds like the light reverb on the harmony vocal goes totally dry and maybe dialed out with some EQ to give it a bit of the old AM radio sound. On further listen it also sounds like one of the harmony vocals is somewhat lagging in time and dropped in pitch (Could it possibly be a slowed tape effect or the old fashioned flange effect by slowing the second tape machine way down to where it goes beyond phasing into an actual drop in pitch?). Jeff Lynne knows.
The Birthday - The Idle Race [Birmingham, England] - 1968 - "A nice sounding British Invasion-Pop-esque song with notable vocals and beat." - Back to the Story [Original Recording Remastered] [Import Hong Kong] (EMI Records Ltd.) (Disc 1)-2007.
I always thought McCartney got his idea for The Beatles version of Birthday from this cool tune- especially with the LP version- having the traditional, stringed version. Has Paul or Jeff ever commented?

Lynne experimented with different sounds showing us what he was capable of, his lyrics did more than tell a story and his sheer scope and talent with instruments and harmonies just pushes him that much further for me. I'd choose Jeff over the Beatles
So many comparisons to the Beatles but I like to judge Lynne's music on it's own merits. Many groups sounded the same back in the day as they do today. Given the recording equipment used in recording at the time surely that's gonna have a massive influence.
@aboosh02 This song was a harbinger of things to come from the mind of Jeff Lynne. Brilliant. Melodic. Rocking. Fantastic. How is ELO not in the RRHOF!? It's a crime.
The only image that doesn't belong is the one of Carolyn Jones and John Astin (Morticia and Gomez). That show was on the air from 1964-1966, although I'm sure reruns were airing in a few places in 1968.
I know i used a bit of artistic licence as they were wearing birthday hats but like you im sure somewhere it was being shown and thanks for watching all my videos.
A song Ray Davies (especially) would be proud to have written!

Brilliant song and brilliant video. Thanks elofan567. Always thought this song would not have looked out of place on Sgt Pepper.

I think that if the Beatles didn't exist than the Idle Race would have been popular.

Maybe, maybe not.
I think to the major audience of pop- music it
is too special. It was, it is and it is going
to be a group of a small but fanatic admirers.
Shame, but probably true.

I so agree not a bad track on the album.

I recommend to everyone The Idle Race 2cd
Back to the Story released last year.
It contains the two superb albums, which
were almost mainly written by Jeff Lynne.
Fine singles left off these albums.
Plus third album in which Lynne wasn´t
taking part anymore.
