The "music" ruins this video. Music of the period (18th, early 19th centuries) can be quite pleasing even to a "rocker" in small doses. The frantic pace of this audio is entirely inconsistent with the slow, painstaking process of building a fine model.
If ya caan put something on it, so it can float, and so it can float with the wind a bit to have fun with, then i'd buy it xd When im lots older and have money and time to waste, id luv to build the grand 106 gunner :)
HI great series of vids to show how the Victory can look - I am building it for my six year old son - who is now bugging me to make the trip to see the real thing . Any way thanks for the tips - It shows just how much work goes in to it .... I'd sussed the bit about not driving the tacks all the way in ...pls advise I have damaged a fair few planks whilst 'bending' until I got the hang of soaking and starting laying 'on the bend ' - do they supply spares ?
i am in a tight situation im getting a black pearl corsair ship model its the outside planking and boarding the deck board by board im going to have alot of trouble on pls help
@Hoggamadog Its not worth it if u dont enjoy the hobby yeah. think about it, 540, and if u build it for like 5 yrs, it just like 15 bucks a month lol...well worth it.
Your Black Pearl is a phantasy model with a shape which more remembers to dutch ships of the 17th century than to the time of Jack Sparrow. As it´s more a toy than a demanding model, it´s ok to use balsa. Models like that in this video clip would loose a lot of it´s worth if being built of bad material.
I get some sort of bend in the planks before fixing, lot easier to bend once you have a couple of pins fixed. Used small travel iron to bend once on the hull.
I know I have the patience, and I would expect the instructions to be vague since it's suppost to be exactly like the real ships. Would you recomend me starting out with the "Independance" first? And what are you using to keep the boards down like that?
this one is only the second wooden model i have built, i started with quite a small kit from the same company Artisanialatina. The first only cost £65. Learnt loads of techniques and tricks by doing that one first. Plus at that sort of money its not to big an issue if something goes wrong. The victory was over £500. All hull planks fixed with nails, backed up with glue. The planking is something you really need to have experience with, there is a definate knack to it.
building this model seems really hard to me

Um i'm kind of stuck.
how do you make the keel?
swgic 2 years ago 2
The keel is a seperate piece of wood glued into place after the hull has been planked. I cut a groove with a Dremel to fit the one in the vid
Hoggamadog 2 years ago
Can anyone point me in the direction of some HMS Victory plans.
any scale but not too small please.
swgic 2 years ago
hey when you plank the bulkheads with 1 layer of wood what do you do about the holes from the pins?
leeadamaa 2 years ago
Dont push the pins in all the way. Leave the heads proud and snip these off. Tap in the remaining pin stub flush with the wood.
Hoggamadog 2 years ago
If anyone needs plans or instructions, let me know. Also, I recommend buying a keel klamper and a fair-a-frame. It'll make life a lot simplier.

Excellent job! I salute you.

Awesome. I built an Airfix type model when I was about 8, that seemed hard then. You have incredible patients and skill.
You ever been to see the Victory? I lived in Pompey for 5 years and took visitors there a lot.

Whick wood did you use for the skin? Balsa wood?
biostu 3 years ago
No balsa used. The frame is ply. all the rest hardwood
Hoggamadog 3 years ago
ok thanks.
biostu 3 years ago
Do you think is better ply wood than balsa for the frame? (is it cheaper than balsa?
biostu 3 years ago
balsa a lot cheaper, but ply is a lot stronger. You need something quite solid to nail into. Balsa just wouldn't do the job
Hoggamadog 3 years ago
Never use balsa, please. That´s the worst material in model ship building.
dancingwithfrogs 3 years ago
Why? all ships i made i used balsa and really worked. plz tell me why?
