Thanks very much for this tutorial! It works well for my system.
However, I have a question. How can I automate a parameter change (e.g. a filter movement) for a Reason instrument from the Reaper interface? It doesn't seem to work the same way as automating a VSTi in Reaper.
I tried to create the automation in the Reason timeline instead, but that doesn't seem to work either (due to the slave mode?).
Instead of using instruments for your template in reason, I'd recommend using Combinators, that way you have much less worry when it comes to routing if you do work with different styles and use complex routing with fx.
That is probably the best idea. Unless you want to mix any drums from Reason inside of Reaper Combinators are going to be the best route. This is just re-enforcement for the routing system with ReWire.
Its unfortunate that the routing system is so complex in Reaper. If you are getting issues with multiple channels recording at the same time you need to 1. Make sure you arent selecting all the channels. and record arming them... 2. make sure you arent trying to record on the Host track(th one with Reason ReWire.
You should only have 1 channel record armed at a time.. this is the channel that you actually want to hear while playing. After you record turn off the Rec Arm and it will play.
I managed to connect redrum and I can record on reaper with it, but there's a lot of noise underneath (like when you record silence and then turn it up). I chose 64 channels, and whenever I hit "record enable" on the drums all 64 channels are record enabled. Its like they're all one channel. I assume all these extra channels recording simultaneously is the problem? Any idea how to fix this and record drums cleanly?
So I just tried rewiring redrum, followed your way exactly step by step but when I hit record on reaper and play notes with my midi keyboard I just get weird quiet beeping glitchy noises when I listen to the recording playback. Each channel is armed to record so how do I record the actual beats??? This is insanely complicated :(
I did run into another thing that was more irritating than a big problem. I put in the 2 new Combinators, Folder with MIDI and Audio tracks like you demonstrated. On the first one it works perfectly, MIDI on the MIDI track, Audio on Audio and both showing on the Folder. Recording on the 2nd one does the same but ALSO registers the audio (only) on the Folder track of the 1st Combinator.
I can mute it. So it's not critical, but it's just weird and confusing.
It turned out to be me. I had added 2 more Combinators and had wired them wrong. The only reason I was getting audio on playback was that Reason saw my actually keyboard and so IT was producing the audio instead of recieving the MIDI from Reaper. Once I deselected the keyboard and repatched the MIDI it was fine.
This is great. It's been really useful. But I have a question... Say you've recorded a MIDI track in you NNXT MIDI channel. I can hear the audio while recording, but then, in playback, it's silent. Now I know I can render it to audio and get sound on a track, but I'd like to be able to record other tracks while hearing the MIDI playback so that if I need to make small adjustments to previous MIDI tracks, I don't need to render the audio again. Any thoughts?
This is pretty odd.. If you record onto the "Midi Track" in reaper, you should be able to hear the track back after recording it just like when you were playing it.
Make sure you DON'T have the Midi track as the Parent folder with the Audio file in the parent... if you do that it will disable the audio to avoid feedback.
Hey great tutorial, thanks heaps your clear instructions made it alot easier.. You saved me so much time and have made my decision to go with the reason reaper setup the right one. Thanks again your a legend.
@Jellybeantiger FYI you have to do the exact same thing in Pro Tools if you want to have everything tracked out through the program. It's something Propellerheads created to keep everything contained within Reason/Record and not other DAWs.. but we like to use VST's so, that's where the issue comes in. Eventually Reason will have VST support, and it'll be a wrap for most DAWs!
I don't have any ReWire plugins. Where do I find them?

@ytgijs I was doing something wrong. I now succeeded in recording the automation in the Reason timeline. It is heard in Reaper.

Does this tutorial apply to reason 5?
analduct 8 months ago
@analduct
Yes, My templates for Reason 4 and my template for Reaper work just fine with my new Reason 5. :-)

this probably sounds stupid
but how do you un rewire it
I want to work just in reason
but its not letting me because its rewired

@TheOfficialVipList
You would just open Reason on its own without Reaper.

For some reason, when I use my midi keyboard, all the sounds play at the same time. It's kinda annoying.

@thesquirr3l
Do you have all the instruments record enables and monitor enabled? If so then that makes perfect sense.

I'll just use all Reapers stuff and vst. This is too complicated.

@deanc2000
Lol.. part of the purpose of this video was to teach you all the routing in Reaper.
After you go through it all you can save a template so you don't have to do it again.
I guess I could just give out a template.. but that would defeat the purpose of teaching. :)

Still don't understand this.
Mine are still going to 2 tracks and I don't have the abilty to receive only 1 on track 1.
It only has receive for track 2 in track 1.
Help.
I really need a dummies guide.
Something so simple made so hard by reaper.
That's the trouble with these programs.
Not intuitive enough.
