But still, Queens just isn't the same without Shea. Never will be again. That's obvious... It's still so surreal not seeing it when I pass the Northern Flushing Meadows area. Like, when riding on the Van Wyck. It is something seeing that huge empty space...makes me think of how the spot The Stadium (BX!!!) sits in will look once that memorable palace comes down for good. It'll be something different. Hell, Giants Stadium, too... The Tri-State area is changing, man. No doubt about it.
Shea HAD to go. On t.v., yeah, it looked good. Especially in HD! Lol! But if you ever actually went to a ballgame there, you saw how fucked up it really was. It's been in disrepair since the late-80's/early-90's (my pop took me to two games in the summer of '89--it was in bad shape then). The Citi was inevitable. Though, it is a shame they couldn't do the retractable roof thing. Given the position of the new park and the direction its facing (pretty much Northeast), there's no real view. :(
You said it! I think being a Mets fan in the beginning was one part goof, one part the incipient youth rebellion (I was 16 in '64.) But going to the park was always a gas! There was always some sense of 'Who knows?' adventure, even in '08. My son is a lifelong Mets fan & saw some of the great Shea home games. The new place smells of hedge fund counterparties, policed crowds and Jeff.
Poor Yankee Fans. You Yankee Fans have "issues". The Pittsburgh Pirates destroyed you in the 1960 World Series on the Bill Mazorowski Home-run. You still didn't get over The Bill Mazorouski Home-run which destroyed "The Yankees". The Bucs beat the pinstripes and whip the tar out of "The Yankees". Too Bad......Ask Yogi Berra.
i work at shea. there not exploding it, its illegal in new york. there taking it apart peice by peice. i was there this morning march 22nd, the stadium is damn near done, and i give it a 10 out of 10

The demolition of Shea will be the complete and total extinction of the disaterous cookie cutter stadium design. Of all of the cookie cutter stadiums that ever existed, Shea was hands down, the worst designed and most structurally flawed of them all which makes it all the more ironic that it will be the last one to go. Its demolition is probably about 10 to 15 years overdue. Citi Field looks nice but I think they could've made it more accessible to the average fan.
For all Shea's flaws, it really was a beautiful unique field. The Shea scoreboard was, and still is, a modern wonder. I agree its time to move on and I look foward to Citi Field, but please give Shea a little respect.

Shea was such a great park. What a disgrace it's gone and the Mets play in a corporate park.

You can hear the rotors, thats a helicopter. Plus if that was a plane it would have already landed at adjacent LaGuardia.

After Shea the next stadium that should be knocked down is the MetroDome in Mpls.
