Days between.........being born and the soul reaching its final destination....so its been known from the beginning.......gotta think deep to understand these days between. Thanks Jerry for all the memories.. God Bless you in Eternity
Although this is a polarizing song I grew up on these "new" tunes in the late 80's and 90's. Most folks like they time frame of shows that they experienced. Noting wrong with that...as long as we respect each other we can embrace our differences!
I very rarely have any negatvity to point towards garcia but i gotta be honest this was easily one of his and hunters biggest flops. In the "90"s it was real hard to catch a show that was pretty good (great does not apply in the "90"s) show and jerry would take the band to this song, well dissappointment was the word that fits here. I must be honest but it made me cringe, i am a morning dew man but even they were weak in the "90"s, but garcia would do killer stella blue"s which was fine 4 me.
@UmpquaNation I hear ya man. I got this song at quite a few of the last shows I ever got to see on the west coast. This song still chokes me up every time. There was nothing like being at a Grateful Dead show and experiencing songs like this. I'd give anything to have those days back.
I was at this show! Thanks so much for posting. One of the most beautiful songs ever written. Chokes me up every time. The most perfect chord progression ever.
@JoshDone your interpretation is at least as valid as mine--but I see the transcendent, in love, creative days being the Days, and the "traffic jam, boogie street" (to borrow from L.Cohen) as the days between. Life. Ygotta live and love some to notice that. IMHO.
I had quit seeing the Dead by the time they started playing this song, but it's a bummer and depresses me to hear a dying man sing about death. Not one of my favorites.
My cousin and I listened to this song over a hundred times the summer of 1995. Jerry passed....and my cousin two months later. Thanks for posting...timing appropriate..15 years since I listened to it. Thanks.
Still does it for me. Takes me backto some of the best times of my life thank you Kat jen and Pat god did we have fun and last but not less thank you Jerry
I was fortunate to have been able to see this song live (3/27/95), and it was the first time I had heard it. I can remember thinking that it was SO profound...like every phrase contained the meaning to life. I can remember thinking that Jerry knew me better than I did. Beautiful song. Haunting and dark. Very sad, especially being that he passed away a few short months later. R.I.P. Jerry. "May the 4 winds blow you safely home".
saw furthur play this at the nateva festival weekend over the weekend.
Set 2:
st. stephen > jack straw > dear mr. fantasy > eyes of the world > days in between > help on the way/slipknot > franklin's tower, going down the road feeling bad > we bid you good night. E) U.S. blues with fireworks.
As a new deadhead, I had never heard this... At the Vibes 09' was my first. I couldn't turn away. The music took me away, more than the buzz... this hits ytou in the gut. God bless
Sure,, It would have been nice if this song had fermented a little more, but I think it was the perfect song for it's time and place.
I count myself very fortunate to have caught it live at least once.
The Dead couldn't out-do a Morning Dew, and I dont think that was the goal.. Days Between just struck that chord, ya know? Beautiful and haunting song that could stand up on it's own.
This song could NEVER have been written in the 70s. This song is about life and death, the change of seasons, the never ending cycle. Jerry and Hunter could never have come up with a song as dark and meaningful as this song is. It is POWERFUL because of how soulful Jerry's voice was in the last years. Jerry in the 70s was not capable of producing emotion like this song does. See So Many Roads for another fine example of Jerry/Hunters 90s writing. Very different than the 70s era.
@B34N You bring it just perfectly to the point!!! It's a perfect moving song and it's very mature of its kind, a song in a million to me - juts like "So Many Roads". Nothing to add.
Personally for me one of Jerry's prettiest and most moving songs. The one from Tampa Stadium at the end of Spring Tour '95 holds a special spot for me.
amethyst crystals from the trees- i knew he was singing to I alone. sandos and diazapan~ undisclosed copious amounts. where are you christopher boeri...zila from torrence?
it may be my age, it may be cause my first show was 91, but i love the new hunter garcia stuff, liberty so many roads, this. i just love hearing this. how many nights did this heal, or haunt. i sure miss him. i have seen phil, and bob since, even the grisman b day bash but nothing quite compares. WOW!!!!
I first heard this song at Deercreek in the Summer of 93. Such an inspirational song... I feel like I can do anything after listening to it.. even now.
Its the most haunting beautiful song...I believe both Hunter and Garcia knew the end was near when they wrote this song..God how i miss and love Jerry
few tunes bring tears to my eyes>>> this is one of them
black muddy river, believe it or not, and standing on the moon
this song still haunts me
the summer of 1995 there were few moments of magic, but for some reason at RFK Jerry seemed to be lecturing me like a stern grandfather. I should have listened more carefully!!!
@shermski77 i'm only 20, so i never got to see jerry, but when i listen to some of these ballads, especially, 94-95 versions of so many roads, it brings a tear to my eye
Brother, thank you so much!!!! I am here in Oregon, and can not thank you enough. where ever you are please understand my gratitude. when my father died in 2001, I so vividly remember listining to this song over and over, if there is a God, may his light warm your soul, thank you thank you thank you add infinitum
I am Grateful to remember these amazing moments in time, as this nite at shoreline . TY Jerry!
