@08EB08 with high quality American brass ammo then its okay, but cheap Russian Surplus will destroy a bare naked barrel. that said, i might buy one :)
I have a SIg p226 in both 9mm and an Sig Equinox in .40 cal plus a 522 for my kids. Super solid guns and very accurate. 1000 rds thru the 9mm with no malfunctions. Heard bad things about the 7.92....I like the caliber for busting big hogs, but the stamped metal AKs are just not real guns IMO. The milled ones are $1000 and up but not ergonomic, and don't shoulder well. I've handled the 556-R in 7.92 and am considering it. Any serious, accuracy-obsessed shooters out there who own this gun ?
Just picked up my new sig 556r cannot wait to blow rounds!!!!! I have bushmaster ar's ak's ds arms ar's, saiga conversions, nothing compares to this rifle, makes the ar15 look like a whimp! This is a must get for all tactical enthusiast! If u can't afford 1100-1300$ then get the sig 522 it's a 22lr n it will give u the experience of the 556. I love this weapon! Bring on Al Qaeda!
@jcmacconnell Same, considering children can make it and its available in some parts of the world for less then a Big Mac. It might be modern but its expensive, complex compared to the original model, and looks like crap. I have to strongly agree with you.
@Gloomshadow1 i've never had a problem with my sig 556er (prob have ran at least 2000 rounds through it by now with no stopages) Bought the 556 in 7.62 and ran at least 60 rds through it with no problems. I've heard about things going wrong with the classic, and you can see they switched up the lower reciever for mass production (flat stamped mine has grooves etc) on the new 7.62 it has a 3rd lower reciever design.
@mikethebassguy I just wouldnt mess with it, no military heritige, a Daewoo K-seris is a fraction of the cost and its a piston gun too but with rock-solid reliablity. The Sig just doesnt impress me as something I would want in combat. I would take an AKM in 762 over that Sig anyday...now a Sig pistol, thats a different story, they have a long law enforcement heritige with pistols and they are very good.
@Gloomshadow1 understand where you are coming from as everyone has their own opinions, however the original Sig 552 (550 series) was marketed to other countries in 7.62x39, and that is what this weapon is going for. Like i said its a matter of opinion and personal experience and I have yet to have a problem with either Sig rifle i have. When it comes to pistols I turn away from sig and turn to CZ because i hate polymer framed pistols.
@mikethebassguy I was actually talking about the 226 pistol that was all steel, excellent pistol. Milspec Sigs are fine rifles but due to currency exchange rates and limited production leves you end up with a good rifle that is x3 the price of an AK and x2 price of an AR..and the Sig is in no way "twice as good" as an AR nor is it "three times as good" as an AK...its just a good rifle, no more no less. Its weakness is the price. If you gave me one would I carry it? Hell yeah! Buy one? Fuck NO!
@Gloomshadow1 lol well a good Ak costs around 500 bucks, and a good make of the AR costs around 1000. I payed 1325 for my 556, and 1100 for the 7.62 model. i wouldnt say Its twice as good as an AK but would still say its better. As for the AR id say they are about even i just happen to like the Sig better. And yes i am saying the AR is better then the AK.
@mikethebassguy I carried the best AR ever made while serving in the 1/327th Infantry 101st Airborne and other units like the 1/506 INF DMZ Korea, and that was the M-16A2 20" HBAR, exellent rifle, Ive owned 4 different AKs, Norinco AK-84, Polytech Legend 47, Ratmil Cugir 74 and a AMD65..and Ive worked with many others including the "crappy" WASR10/63 but still, "better" depends on how you look at it. Better accuracy? hell yes. Better to equip a massive army in record time? hell no. (contd.)
@mikethebassguy The AK offers a hell of alot of gun for a low price, with excellent reliablity and accuracy good enough for combat, nothing on the thing is really threaded and very little of it machined, its all stampings and castings..I think production cost when they were in full swing back in the 50s was like $20 bucks a unit, and they got the whole Soviet system converted to them in just a few years. Hellava weapon from logistical standpoint. Then they gave them out for free later on..
@Gloomshadow1 From a logistical point i agree, accuracy and reliablity i've had more problems with AKs then any other weapon. The AR seems to be just as reliable if not more these days.
@mikethebassguy It all just depends on what AK you have and if you can troubleshoot it. You can take a used $300 WASR and if you know what youre doing get to run slick as hell. Century let few bad ones go out when they shouldnt have, but as long as all the parts are there I can usually fix one pretty cheap and many of the problems WASRs had, many of the Eastern European ones also had from time to time. The best of them is not Russian nor K-var but NORINCO, they had the best steel.
@Gloomshadow1 ones me and my father have dealt with: newest to oldest, Polish Tantal (great!) Century 74 (poor and for sale) Romanian akm (had to file certain mags to make them fit the gun and ammo picky)
Valmet (my fathers before my time inacurate and ak trigger and but sting) He also had 1 before that as well which did the same thing and if forget which model it was. Havn't dealth with norinco ak's however from what i''ve seen their sks's and M1a's are poorly made.
@mikethebassguy I dont know how you define "poor", Noricos used high quality steel with a relly thick barrel and reciever, the metal including the mags were BLUED and this showed off all the tool marks, you'd see scratches everywhere..the Eruo AKs were PAINTED with baked-on engine paint, this hid the tool marks but was cheaper than blue. The US Army Special Forces tested all of them for use and chose the Norinco over all of them. Thats what Saddam bought for his army also.
@mikethebassguy Things like AKs or SKSs dont have "fit and finish" they are produced by means of mass production, "fitting and finishing" is a process of hand-done completion and the SKS and AK did away with hand- finishing..in other words, THEY ALL LOOK LIKE SHIT, scratchmarks, toolmarks ect, but this does not effect function.
@Gloomshadow1 But what im comparing it to it would. If you put my Russian SKS next to a Norinco one you see the difference. Take my Springfield m1a and put it next to a norinco one same thing. I understand function when it comes down to it. However in a collectors state of mind looks and function go hand in hand.
@mikethebassguy they dont though.. the STEN looked like something you pulled out of a tire change kit, but it worked pretty well. Im not talking about this subject from the point of veiw of a collector but the point of view of a soldier. A weapon is just something your army hands you from across a table and you sign for it, then go out and kill the enemy with it..the cheaper and more numerous the better, just as long as you can depend on it. The AK is the worlds most common firearm for a reason.
@Gloomshadow1 Yea, your right! Once you gained some strips you hand the M16 to the next incoming private. You get M14 or become M60 gunner like i did. Ionly new few soldier who actualyy owned the civilian version back when i was in Army in th 1980's. 1911's were popular, M14s and 30 carbines , but M16 got no respect. just did not. Garand 30-06 was still efective commie stopper. Any way i know theres people out here they know better and have all the medals and shit.British have gone back 7.62
@Gloomshadow1 Yea, your right! Once you gained some strips you hand the M16 to the next incoming private. Reliablity of an Ak......yeah right. How about no reliablilty if it is anything like the problems the 556's are having. Way too many reports of lack of Quality Control. I have a brand new 556 never fired yet, and had to send back to sig because it could not be fully field stripped per field manual.
@jcmacconnell That's not outrageous, Considering you would spend a good deal more for a top quality AR. Sure in the realm of 7.62x39 its rather high; but you get what you pay for.
the biggest gripe Ive heard about this series of guns is the inability to change out the grips. The default grips are a bit lacking. I have the 522 SWAT and love it!
I've never really been stoked on any Sig products...But...I LOVE THIS RIFLE! If I can some how scrape up my nickels and dimes...I'll have one of these bad boys!!
Funny thing he said at last a 7.62 X39 with a piston setup. All AK 47 types are piston guns. Unless I misunderstood him & he was talking about the 5.56 ?
did i miss something, Sig recommends that you do not shoot steel case through the regular 556, did they change that for the 556R? Why buy a 7.62x39 if you can only shoot brass through it, lat time i checked brass cased 7.62x39 was about the same price as 6.8 so why wouldn't you just buy a 6.8 rifle?
I think that another good option would be 5.45x39. It has ballistics that are similar to the .223, but is much cheaper to shoot so it'd make a great practice round.
This is better than an AK how? I get the benefits to 7.62x39 as a cartridge, but I don't understand why you would run anything but an AK with it. If you're going to spend Sig cash, stay 5.56/6.8spc.
i have yet to see a good review of this rifle. please do one GunWebsites

Bought mine and shot it today. Those who say "ill keep my AK" lol you can keep your AK as mine will be getting sold very soon.
Ak- iron sights good to maybe 200yds
Sig- better iron sight options + optics
Ak- cheek well harder to get and hold with the chance of getting beat up
Sig- WOW!
Ak loading procedure tight tendency to lock up if you dont seat it right
sig felt like i'd handled it for yrs and reloads almost as quick as an AR
Good buy!
