Different people have different opinions and like different sounds. So to ask which one is the best is stupid. People that like Dannies sound are gonna say Danny and the same goes for the ones that like Ernies sound. If you really want to compete the 2. give them both a high note and see shich one can hold that note the longest. Or keep going up on the notes until one of them can't hit a note and the other can.
I have always loved the Cathedral Quartet. George & Glen were fabulous and found wonderful tenors like Ernie Haase, Danny Funderburk, Kirk Talley & Bobby Clark. I'm sure they are getting a kick about people making a fuss over which one was better. I am blessed to have most of their albums and their music on youtube is a treat to all of us.
I believe Danny makes a few solo appearances at churches, and possiby sings some on occasion with his sons group. If I'm not mistaken. And when he is not doing that I assume he is at his home in North Carolina.
In my personal opinion Danny was an incredible performer, I have never herd anyone scream and it sound good, but that was what Danny done. He was a complete power house who could also produce a smooth sound. If you listen to spot 1:12 - 1:23 Ernie can simply not compete with Danny's smoothness and power in this harmony.

Notice how Danny just sings the last note right in time and into his mic. Ernie, on the other hand, drops his mic to his waist until he gets a little closer to the pitch then brings the mic up. Danny was, is and shall continue to be better than Ernie ever thought of.
why is Bobby Clark not included in this? he was amazing too (sorry if I got his name wrong...) if you don't know who i mean look up unclouded day by the cathedrals
Hands down, Danny wins. Ernie does one thing that drives me crazy - he pulls the mic away from his face on the last note until he settles on the pitch then slowly brings it closer to be heard more. Danny, on the other hand, just nails it. Go Danny!!!
they both sing for the LORD, and that's all that matters! But to compare them vocally, there is no comparison. Ernie Haase is the best southern gospel tenor ever by far. It is not even close.
Do the ones that think Ernie's better remember? the OLD CONVENTION song album Danny "THE MANCHILD" Funderburke was on? U don't mess with my Tarheel homeboys like Danny Fuderburke,Michael English,Ivan Parker, and G Younce, I'll take that group vs any other allstar group period at their best.
@TheTarheelmusicman - I will take that lineup too ... Danny and Ivan did sing together for a while with the Singing Americans back in the early 80's and Danny might have made a cameo appearance with the Americans for one of their reunion concerts in the late 80's
In my mind I can actually hear that lineup ... :)
caleb leamon is the greatest tenor hands down i don't know why people think these guys can sing tenor if you ever heard caleb sing you would laugh in their faces. calebs brother tyson can out sing ernie and he's not even a tenor one time he almost took ernie's spot
Ernie. I'm a huge fan of Ernie Hasse. Don't get me wrong, though. Danny Funderburk is an awesome tenor and no one... NO ONE can sing I've Just Started Living any better than he can. I think Ernie has a much better voice overall though. Much more mellow. Danny does better on some songs than Ernie and vice versa.
in my opinion for what its worth----there is no comparison. both are excellent tenors; but Danny Funderburke has a smoothness and a sweetness in his voice, that cannot be matched.
Ernie is high but very harsh again. just my opinion.
I think Younce and Payne, specially Payne, didn't created The Cathedrals to be the best quartet ever and not to find best tenor ever... They created The Cathedrals to be a group who praise the Lord and delivery the Jesus gospel accomplishing Mark 16:15 and they've done it well... God doesn't like competition... and Younce and Payne wouldn't approve what you're doing... Both guys sing great and we can't measure this... they sing good to the Lord...
@VocallysQuarteto - Its really a shame that people who love SOGO music and more specifically people who loved the Cathedrals can't have a little fun with which tenor they liked better without people like you questioning our motives and making silly assumptions.
I did ask both Glenn & George one time who their favorite tenor was ... Glenn just smiled and George mentioned someone I had never heard of.
@VocallysQuarteto - To assert that people can not have a favorite group, tenor, bass, lead, or piano player is ridiculous. And to assert that if we do have a favorite then we should not talk about it is even more ridiculous.
two different singers for two different times. Music was different, neither one might not have sounded as good if they switched places or they might have. They are both terrific singers and are using the gift God has given them. Now personally I am more partcial to Ernie Haase but thats only cause I've heard him more and see him in concert. But thats just me
Danny is still singing doing solo work. Coming to our church in September. He's a personal friend and the greatest tenor that ever sang with Cathedrals.
I love both tenors equally, but in this video, Danny was definitely the "stronger screamer"... Ernie blends with the quartet better, but Danny has the "pop" when it is needed... I think that top not was a full voice note!!!
I love Ernie, especially his work with his new group. But with the Cathedrals...I'm torn. I do enjoy Danny's sound, especially with the Cathedrals older work.
i've always liked Ernie Haase's smooth sounding tenor over Dannys tenor. Howeer on this clip, you can barely even hear him, as compared to Danny later on. The first part of the clip is horrendous quality. It would be easier to judge if you could hear it better. On this particular song, i'll probably have to side with Danny though...but that maybe because I can barely hear Ernie sing...
You are promoting competition in "Who do you likebetter" statement? Both are singing for the Lord and not our critique. And how would you know George would say Danny? Wouldn't it be best to say both have styles which are very pleasing to the Lord and have inspired and brought us closer to Jesus with their God given talent?
personally I like them both each brings a different soundalthough I would say Ernie is slightly better. but really on this song it is Glen payne who reigns as the best.
I think the whole "contest" idea is as ridiculous as comparing David Phelps and Wes Hampton. Both are amazing singers, both are praising the Lord with their voices. What else matters? Nothing. My apologies if I came across as being on a "high horse". Maybe it was just the comments I had read, but I get tired of hearing people compare singers, putting down the ones they don't like best. Of course everyone has a preference and that's fine...but why cut down one singer just because you like another one better?
And I realize not everyone commenting on here is doing that, but an awful lot of them are. And it was beginning to annoy me. I'm sorry; I posted in frustration and shouldn't have.
I like them both alot alot they both sound better in different songs.I would have to say I like Earnie better because my favorite song is We Shall See Jesus.
Anyone who thinks Ernie sings higher than Danny did needs a lesson in voice placement. Danny was a natural, chest voice tenor. Ernie is a false setto tenor. Danny could hit you between the eyes with a high C or D, and do it on pitch. Ernie has to flip into his head voice to hit notes that high, and he has a hard time staying on pitch consistently w/o vocal stax behind him. This is not even a contest.
And also Danny never had to dub in a part on a live video. Obviously, Ernie had to. Danny only jumps around when he sings because he's excited. Ernie just moves his head because its not coming out of his chest.
I like them both. I grew up listening to Danny sing but Ernie blew me away when he came. He has a much less 'twangy' sound and can sing much higher than Danny. However, Danny has a beautiful falsetto, more so than Ernie's and is rock solid on his pitch.
Despite my leanings to nostalgia and experience, I would have to vote Ernie overall.
Danny has a voice that sounds as if its two tenors in harmony. Ernie is good but he sounds best in a crowd. I vote Danny. I am a tenor myself and have always been floored with Danny's voice. Only the tenor Matthew from the group "Second Chapter of Acts" sounds as nice.
Danny has the unique quality of being able to sing the highest notes but still having a masculine tone to his voice- nothing against Ernie- I love him with all my heart- but Danny is simply the better tenor
He's got the more rounded and honed quality to his voice...there's a rich depth there...NOT just someone hitting a high note. Big Differnce. Ernie's The Man...!!!
Which would would explain why George said Danny can raise the roof like anybody else, BUT can take a song like Whosoever Will and sing it so pretty. Yeah, I think Danny is A LOT more than just a high note tenor!
I don't think either of them can match Denver...Bobby Clark was great...lazy but could sing if he had to! My own opinion, so don't holler back at me. Bill Shaw was always flat/sharp, but he was a great guy.
I've been a Cathedrals fan for thirty years and this is the best line up. Danny puts so much passion into his singing, Mark harmonizes like no one else, and the incomparable Glen and George. This is one of if not the best quartets to praise God's glory.
Bbyrdhouse Im glad you phrased your question: Who do you like better instead of Who is best like some people speak in terms of. Its strictly personal preference when talking of these two great tenors. No one can say which is better.
I got the chance to sign with Danny Funderburk about 3 months ago at a concert and in my opinion, Danny is as great of a person as he is a tenor singer. Danny and David Phelps are the 2 best tenors I have ever heard.
I think that if you were to compare these two videos, Danny sounds much better. That said, I think Ernie's voice was not 100% on the Farewell video - he struggled with the final notes on this song, Champion of Love, and We Shall See Jesus. I've seen other videos where Ernie's voice was crystal clear, but I think he was a little hoarse in the Farewell video.
u cant take one song and say who is the best...i personaly like danny but... no one sings "oh what a savior" as good as ernie(besides rosie rozell...for all u rosie fans) but rosie doesnt sing it as high
its funny couple things one the soundtrack is still the same two you have guys in the back ground not Rodger but the others acting like they are playing, three Glen dont sound much diffrent just he can hit alittle higher in the older clip but I like Danny
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
ernie is good but does not compare to danny. danny has one of those voices that as soon as u hear it u know its him. however, he ranks 2nd all time.....the greatest tenor of all time is larnell harris...hes my favorite singer of all time
not just the greatest tenor, but probably the greatest singer to ever sing christian music. once again, you can't even compare so. gospel tenors to a voice like larnell or phelps they were big leaguers playing in the minor leagues.
danny blows him away ernie never should have been a cathedral he has the perfect group now singing with stacked vocals, and dancing, and no talent way to go i love a karoke quartet lip sinking why don,t they try singing around a piano without tracks and lets see how fabulous they are
COULDN'T HAVE SAID IT BETTER MYSELF.FINALLY SOMEBODY ELSE WHO LIVES IN REALITY ON HERE. DANNY WAS ONE OF THE FEW FULL VOICED TENORS IN THE HISTORY OF SO.GOSPEL. ERNIE WAS A FALSE SETTO TENOR. DANNY HIT THE LAST NOTE FULL VOICE IN HIS CHEST. ERNIE BARELY COULD SQUEEZE OUT THE LAST NOTE IN FALSE SETTO,LET ALONE HIT IT ON PITCH, WHICH WAS A CONSTANT PROBLEM WHEN HE SANG WITH THE CATHEDRALS.If you want to compare great tenors, how 'bout Danny Vs. Kirk in their primes. Different sounds, but awesome.
And you are a crass idiot! Do realize you will be judged by the same judgement you hold toward Kirk? I fear for you...why would you turn a civil debate about singing into the typical southern gospel, slandering sesspool?
I totally agree with you. Ernie is ok but Danny puts so much feeling and power into his songs, he is a class by himself. And on the Farewell Sinner Saved, the Grace before the last one was dubbed in because it sounds so fake. Danny on the other hand put all of his might into hitting that end note and it paid off. He was and is the greatest tenor whoever lived in my opinion.
Both are excellent in their own way, but I must say that Danny has always been a more seasoned quartet voice. He has that old "tinny" sound that quartet tenors are missing. Even more so, did anyone notice that George's voice (and Glenn's too) remained consistant over a 20 year period? George's bass voice was so pure and he did not need trick microphones like these bass singers use today to get that deep reverb sound.Bottom line, Danny and Ernie are both great talents but my vote goes to Danny.
Danny is one of, if not the greatest of all time !!!! Brian Free and Danny...1 and 2...or Danny and Brian..Ernie is not in the discussion !!! Ernie is touching a lot of people with SSQ...God has blessed them all !!!
Danny hands down is the best. Ernie also is quite a bit younger. Ernie strains too much to reach the notes. I've seen him do it on quite a few occasions.
If these two guys were singing Opera style or classical style music you would have to say Ernie, but a Southern Gospel tenor is not supposed to sound like the "Pavarotti type".
As far as Southern Gospel singers go ... Ernie does not even qualify because his style is not a Southern Gospel style. Danny, on the other hand is everything you would want in a tenor if you were starting a group from scratch.
Ernie hits the note ture to form. he doesn't sound like he's gonna die getting the note out. like Ernie the best for sure after seeing the video of him with George Younce's last time with them.
He doesn't have near the range that Danny had..or Brian Free or Jay Parrack. Probably not in the top 5 Tenors of all time. He's just got the Gaither wagon behind him.
The range that Danny had??? i used to underestimate ernie until i saw a video in which he climbed up to G5 and another with a low C2.....now how about that range???
Apperently you have never heard Cheer the Weary Traveler on the Distictively album. Danny hits just around the same note, and better! Good thing i own that record.
well danny is good but i know ernie so i gotta go wth him. he went to the church i used to go to in evansville, indiana. and he grew up w/ my sister, and his parents are friends with my parets. and i love ernie's voice.
Well I have actually gotten to know Danny and that is another reason why I like him. He is such a nice a guy and really funny so I can understand why you like Ernie.
Ernie has his own attributes, but Danny is THE tenor. There are tenors I like such as Joe Bonsall, Jerry Trammell, Jim Murray, etc. My favorite sky high gospel tenors are Danny Funderburk, Bill Baize and of course David Phelps.
George said it best...( Danny has power to burn..and blow the top of the roof off!) Ernie is a show. He is a Cruise ship singer and is on and is where he is today only because Bill Gaither was great friends with his father in law. Now Lisa runs the show.
Other tenors that I really like are Jerry Trammel, Laddie Cain, Chuck Pettyjohn, Johnny Cook and Willie Wynn.
I don't think Bill has the GVB singing with EHSS because of George Younce. He knows a good thing when he hears it.I also think Ernie & Lisa are in this together as a team.
Ernie, to me, always sounded like he was straining to hit the notes that Danny hit. Also, there is a noticeable overdub on Ernie's vocal on that clip....right before the last line, when Ern sings "Grace," it is a falsetto overdub, and it actually sounds more like Guy Penrod than Haase....

RedCeltYank1 2 years ago
And also Danny never had to dub in a part on a live video. Obviously, Ernie had to. Danny only jumps around when he sings because he's excited. Ernie just moves his head because its not coming out of his chest.
BnCSGMusic 2 years ago
I like them both. I grew up listening to Danny sing but Ernie blew me away when he came. He has a much less 'twangy' sound and can sing much higher than Danny. However, Danny has a beautiful falsetto, more so than Ernie's and is rock solid on his pitch.
Despite my leanings to nostalgia and experience, I would have to vote Ernie overall.

Danny...much stronger and clearer
jalhrl 2 years ago
Danny has a voice that sounds as if its two tenors in harmony. Ernie is good but he sounds best in a crowd. I vote Danny. I am a tenor myself and have always been floored with Danny's voice. Only the tenor Matthew from the group "Second Chapter of Acts" sounds as nice.

Ernie Haase all the way no one can compare
Lesterjo77 2 years ago
Danny has the unique quality of being able to sing the highest notes but still having a masculine tone to his voice- nothing against Ernie- I love him with all my heart- but Danny is simply the better tenor
jchandleristheman33 3 years ago
Ernie ~ HANDS DOWN...!

I am a huge Cathedral fan and have been all my life, Ernie doesn't hold a candle to Danny. Cathedrals were at their best when it was this lineup.
philipspe 3 years ago
both tenors are great, but in my opinion, non compares (between the two) to Danny Funderburk
he has a 'sweetness to his voice'. Ernie has a sharpness. (just my opinion)
qtmanfrompeterboroug 3 years ago
I don't think either of them can match Denver...Bobby Clark was great...lazy but could sing if he had to! My own opinion, so don't holler back at me. Bill Shaw was always flat/sharp, but he was a great guy.
GospelPhil 3 years ago
I've been a Cathedrals fan for thirty years and this is the best line up. Danny puts so much passion into his singing, Mark harmonizes like no one else, and the incomparable Glen and George. This is one of if not the best quartets to praise God's glory.
choosdad 3 years ago
Bbyrdhouse Im glad you phrased your question: Who do you like better instead of Who is best like some people speak in terms of. Its strictly personal preference when talking of these two great tenors. No one can say which is better.
fpoasec 3 years ago
I got the chance to sign with Danny Funderburk about 3 months ago at a concert and in my opinion, Danny is as great of a person as he is a tenor singer. Danny and David Phelps are the 2 best tenors I have ever heard.
buckdsm13 3 years ago
Danny Funderburk ranks in the top 5 tenors of all time. Rozie Rozell, Bill Baize, Jim Murray, Kirk Talley and Danny in no particular order.
olbrneyes 3 years ago
I think that if you were to compare these two videos, Danny sounds much better. That said, I think Ernie's voice was not 100% on the Farewell video - he struggled with the final notes on this song, Champion of Love, and We Shall See Jesus. I've seen other videos where Ernie's voice was crystal clear, but I think he was a little hoarse in the Farewell video.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
ernie is good but does not compare to danny. danny has one of those voices that as soon as u hear it u know its him. however, he ranks 2nd all time.....the greatest tenor of all time is larnell harris...hes my favorite singer of all time
spenceov7 3 years ago
not just the greatest tenor, but probably the greatest singer to ever sing christian music. once again, you can't even compare so. gospel tenors to a voice like larnell or phelps they were big leaguers playing in the minor leagues.

Ernie sounds the best!!
ERNIE YOU ROCK!!

i still believe David Phelps is the old time, undisputed, undefeated champion ;)

that's true. but he's not your traditional quartet tenor like these mere mortals. he's a freak of nature. wicked awesome!!!

but youre right David is the best of all:D

danny blows him away ernie never should have been a cathedral he has the perfect group now singing with stacked vocals, and dancing, and no talent way to go i love a karoke quartet lip sinking why don,t they try singing around a piano without tracks and lets see how fabulous they are

ok,ok ... now....... why don't you say what you really think. LOL. you have a point about the lip sinking.
thrashman1973 3 years ago
RedCeltYank1 3 years ago
Kirk is a faggot so he doesn't count.
bellicosejason 3 years ago
And you are a crass idiot! Do realize you will be judged by the same judgement you hold toward Kirk? I fear for you...why would you turn a civil debate about singing into the typical southern gospel, slandering sesspool?
RedCeltYank1 3 years ago
What is your problem? Kirk wasn't even mentioned...
robinashleylovesyou 3 years ago
I totally agree with you. Ernie is ok but Danny puts so much feeling and power into his songs, he is a class by himself. And on the Farewell Sinner Saved, the Grace before the last one was dubbed in because it sounds so fake. Danny on the other hand put all of his might into hitting that end note and it paid off. He was and is the greatest tenor whoever lived in my opinion.
dannyfunderburkfan 3 years ago
Both are excellent in their own way, but I must say that Danny has always been a more seasoned quartet voice. He has that old "tinny" sound that quartet tenors are missing. Even more so, did anyone notice that George's voice (and Glenn's too) remained consistant over a 20 year period? George's bass voice was so pure and he did not need trick microphones like these bass singers use today to get that deep reverb sound.Bottom line, Danny and Ernie are both great talents but my vote goes to Danny.
mdg964 3 years ago
Danny is one of, if not the greatest of all time !!!! Brian Free and Danny...1 and 2...or Danny and Brian..Ernie is not in the discussion !!! Ernie is touching a lot of people with SSQ...God has blessed them all !!!
simsman1975 3 years ago
i think danny is better.
pianoman861987 3 years ago
Danny hands down is the best. Ernie also is quite a bit younger. Ernie strains too much to reach the notes. I've seen him do it on quite a few occasions.
militarychief 3 years ago
If these two guys were singing Opera style or classical style music you would have to say Ernie, but a Southern Gospel tenor is not supposed to sound like the "Pavarotti type".
As far as Southern Gospel singers go ... Ernie does not even qualify because his style is not a Southern Gospel style. Danny, on the other hand is everything you would want in a tenor if you were starting a group from scratch.
IMO...

Ernie Haase RULES the tennors; no question about it......period!

Ernie hits the note ture to form. he doesn't sound like he's gonna die getting the note out. like Ernie the best for sure after seeing the video of him with George Younce's last time with them.
anneja25 3 years ago
He doesn't have near the range that Danny had..or Brian Free or Jay Parrack. Probably not in the top 5 Tenors of all time. He's just got the Gaither wagon behind him.
BamaMTA04 3 years ago 4
The range that Danny had??? i used to underestimate ernie until i saw a video in which he climbed up to G5 and another with a low C2.....now how about that range???
cocopianoboy 3 years ago
Apperently you have never heard Cheer the Weary Traveler on the Distictively album. Danny hits just around the same note, and better! Good thing i own that record.

well danny is good but i know ernie so i gotta go wth him. he went to the church i used to go to in evansville, indiana. and he grew up w/ my sister, and his parents are friends with my parets. and i love ernie's voice.

ha thnx!! he's a really cool guy when u get to know him. funny and loves basketball!

Is there a comparison? C'mon, Danny is THE best tenor to ever grace the roster of the Cathedrals.
kelwms1967 3 years ago 3
Ernie has his own attributes, but Danny is THE tenor. There are tenors I like such as Joe Bonsall, Jerry Trammell, Jim Murray, etc. My favorite sky high gospel tenors are Danny Funderburk, Bill Baize and of course David Phelps.
thequartetman 3 years ago 2
George said it best...( Danny has power to burn..and blow the top of the roof off!) Ernie is a show. He is a Cruise ship singer and is on and is where he is today only because Bill Gaither was great friends with his father in law. Now Lisa runs the show.
Other tenors that I really like are Jerry Trammel, Laddie Cain, Chuck Pettyjohn, Johnny Cook and Willie Wynn.
thebankdick 3 years ago
I don't think Bill has the GVB singing with EHSS because of George Younce. He knows a good thing when he hears it.I also think Ernie & Lisa are in this together as a team.
Just the way I see it.

K..let me stress how much I LOVE Ernie. But, um, Danny is in an entirely different league than everyone...he's just...Danny.
robinashleylovesyou 3 years ago
Ernie, to me, always sounded like he was straining to hit the notes that Danny hit. Also, there is a noticeable overdub on Ernie's vocal on that clip....right before the last line, when Ern sings "Grace," it is a falsetto overdub, and it actually sounds more like Guy Penrod than Haase....
Oakswarrior 3 years ago
this just makes me laugh. I wonder who i pick, DANNY

Danny. No one can sky those notes like he can. But my fave Cat was and always will be was George. He is missed.
