"When I was young, I'd listen to the radio..." listening for Karen's voice. I don't listen to their music so often anymore. But her voice still makes my heart sing along. R.I.P sweet lady.
@ItIsAllGoodMostly its unfair to blame Richard Carpenter it had to gut him to watch his little sister starve herself and no matter what you want to do up to and including spanking her knowing damn well there was nothing he could do
I first heard of The Carpenters when they did Goodbye to Love, I was only 8, they were an Icon because there is NOBODY like them. What I love about them besides their music is that they stayed true to themselves, well, until Karen developed anorexia. Then there was the "three of them".
See, the beauty of the Carpenters, is that no on, not one can duplicate any song by this duo, and reproduce what Karen sang, and how she sung it. I've heard so many versions "close to you" and nothing comes close. Karen...sung from the heart, a true poet! She was a sick lady with her illness, and no one to properly guide her, she may have still been here. DAMN! I'm 46, and to know me, you would not think that this is what I listen to. Best of the Carpenters is always in my cd player.
@MsLuvera Pretty much true with me, I don't like every song, but I am a metal head who's over 40, so at other times in my life, were other decades of music that I enjoyed and still do
Karen Carpenter has the most beautiful voice I have ever heard. Love her songs. Favorite is Superstar. Makes me cry everytime I listen to it. Wish you were still here. We all miss you.
I told Randy Schmidt lets go on National TV & I will tell you everything you left out of Little Girl Blue- People are really beginning to understand that this gentlemen is making money off of Karen's misfortune. Randy puts on his little suits, goes out signs books, hasen't donated anything towards eating disorders, he has even talked Karen's friends into talking to him, it's on video- However did anyone notice the peolpe who count the most remained LOYAL! Point made!
Agnes and Richard were a pair of cunts. Her whole downfall was due to that talentless prick and a mother who couldn't have cared less about her. The dear old mother thought the sun shone out his ass. She should have gone solo, but they resented her and held her back. A true talent fucked over by those "closest" to her.
@genieman71 Richard couldn't handle the quick success and got on drugs; Mom and Pop were a couple of cold fish by all accounts, and Karen's taste in men led her to some shady characters her parents (unfortunately proved right) warned her against. KC didn't have much of an emotional support system; "...No one ever cared if [she] should live or die/Time and time again the chance for love ha[d] passed [her] by..." Not quite as simple as the conspiracy theory you're selling, mate.
I don't think young viewers can really appreciate how innovative and cutting edge the Carpenters were at the time. Overdubbing was fairly new stuff and Richard and Karen perfected it to the nth degree. It gave the Carpenters that rich lush, beautiful sound. Still Amazing!!
Karen Anne Carpenter (March 2, 1950 – February 4, 1983) was an American singer and drummer. She and her brother, Richard, formed the 1970s duo
"The Carpenters". She was a drummer of exceptional skill, but it is for her vocal performances that she is best remembered.
She suffered from anorexia nervosa, a little known disease at the time, and died at the age of 32 from heart failure, later attributed to complications related to her illness.
I love the Carpenters. But, this video, the story and the taboo of anorexia make me made. I know her family loved her but , one of the reasons people suffer from anorexia is because it's a control thing. this poor woman was told what to do her whole life. How to act, speak, sing. She could not hale a taxi herself until in her twenties. The body dismorphic disorder stil exists today. Look at models. RIP Karen now you have control of your destiny. We all mis your talent.
Karen Carpenter is the best singe ever! I love her voice, and they have so many great hits. I love the song "Touch me when we're dancing" it's stuck firmly to the brain!!
Nobody will EVER sing just like Karen did...I grew up listening to her perfect voice...She taught me how to sing...an icon of music everlasting and unforgettable...
Her voice was so lovely but don't forget her first love...the drums because she is one of the world's best female drummers to this day and in those days girls didn't do drums. RIP Karen.
Her voice is so hard to describe.. it's so lovely. True, nobody has and will ever have a voice like her. I wouldn't be surprised if their music would still be heard at around 2025 or 2050.
I wish we had more voices like these around. What we have now are so-called 'singers' who don't even know how to sing love songs like the Carpenters have.
The voice of an angel on earth for such a short time. I am grateful to have experienced her talent in my life. My heart aches at her return to heaven; I miss her greatly.
I love her singing,it's like a loving mother singing to her child(close to you) Its so soothing in your times of sadness and despair. RIP May god bless you. pray for you.

Easy: you take a young girl who's mother has been and is hyper-critical and judgemental, who teaches that girl that nothing less than perfection is acceptable, you throw in enormous media scrutiny...something had to break. With Karen, it surfaced as self abuse through starvation.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Many people have hyper-critical and judgemental parents, yet not all of them become anorexic. This is all about individual's personality.
There are plenty of celebs who began their way from the bottom of the bottom, who were forced to work from the age of 13 for their living and lived almost at the streets. Karen had much easier life than many of her colleagues, If she didn't appreciate what she had - than it's her own problem.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It's always easier to blame parents and whole world in one's problems. But after all, we are the ones who are responsible for our actions. Karen had everything, most of the people could only dream about, and still she wasn't satisfied.. Well, it's because she never really knew what hard life is and thought she was the most miserable on the planet, while most of her problems were made up. It's called - egocentrism
It's called, you do not understand anorexia! I'm not here to educate you either, but for God's sake stop judging people about something you are utterly ignorant about. Remember, you point that finger and 3 are coming back at YOU~
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You are the one who started judging people without even knowing them (her parents). And if you don't have any forcible arguments except becoming personal - then you are the one who are ignorant here.
Anorexia is a kind of disease that is common only in thrifty, developed countries. You wouldn't find even one anorexic in poor countires.
Hmm. Well you are right, people who have to struggle to get enough food would never understand or likely get, Anorexia or bulimia. Some do, though. And if you re-read my comment, I was not blaming her mother per se for Karen's eating disorder, I was commenting on how the strive for perfection can lead to this problem. As far as egos? No one hates themselves worse than a person who is starving herself to death because she doesn't think she is worthy of food. THey have ZERO egos.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Maybe her mother indeed was striving for perfection. But should we blame her for being a typical product of Westen Culture? From the early childhood they are being brainwashed for striving to perfection and realize the notorious "American Dream".
I wasn't talking about ego (self-confidence), but about egocentrism. Egocentrism - is when person is totally sank into his own issues, and becomes sure that he is the most miserable in the world, even if his problems exist only in his mind.

why are you so sure she wanted to be a rock-star? and what's so wrong with soft-rock? because she dead from anorexia? and what about all those rock musicians who died from overdose?
love you Karen..... no body beats the Carpenters.... thank you thank you thank you for the music you brought us, you are truly missed... and thank you CrescentNoon for sharing these videos with us....
i weep hearing this lady karen sing...but its kinda wierd how she was never into singing and more into drums even though she could be labeled as the most gorgeous voice in music history...a person like her only comes once in a century or 2
I know that Karen died, but that doesn't means carpenters sound "died",it's eternal.Their music saved the celestial Karen's voice, so she never died really, she is in my heart.
I think that nobody can imitate well The Carpenters. They are my favorite music band, I love The Carpenters!
I think that in an aspect the Carpenter sound died with Karen. There has not been to this date any woman who can match her voice and there also has not been any duo that has the sound that her and Richard did together.
I really dont think that there ever will be again. All you have to do is listen to todays music to see that it is no longer about the quality of the music, only about how much money they can make from it!
My response was directed to you because i completely understood your statment. The recordings may go on but the sound died with her when she passed because no one will ever be able to match it so hence the sound is not eternal.
You know what they say. Opinions are like assholes and every one has one. Just some assholes are bigger than others and i bet yours takes up 2 chairs!
obviously like a fingerprint the exact same voice cannot be repeated again-there is only ever one of each person forever. Its a huge pity that the whole idea that a woman has to be slim to be considered beautiful isn,t gone
I know that Karen died, but that doesn't means carpenters sound "died",it's eternal.Their music saved the celestial Karen's voice, so she never died really, she is in my heart.
I think that nobody can imitate well The Carpenters. They are my favorite music band, I love The Carpenters!
Karen was such an amazing singer it was insane. the most beautiful voice that ever existed. no one can ever replace her ever. she was AMAZING. PERIOD.
Best Voice EVER. End of Story. Richard is a an amazing talent as well. SO much talent in one family. Just down the street from the Beach Boys, too. God, to have been living there in the early sixties.
I appreciate your opinion, but I don't think there's any similarity. Not just in their voices but in their worth and ability to sing in general. Karen is incomparable.
No, not really. Sheryl Crow, however, did a cover of 'Solitaire' on the 'If I Were a Carpenter' album, and while it wasn't similar to Karen's, it was still a decent version.
They have completely different styles and I've never heard Shania sing any of Karen's songs, but if you listen to their voices, IMHO they have a very similar sound .
I will never forget Karen Carpenter and Richard! Remember Richard played a major part in the role of the excellence of the Carpenters! I still love them and will never forget them!
Alltime hot Carpenters 'uncool?' says more about 1970s sad suckas, than about Carpenters' constant class.

i weep hearing this lady karen sing...but its kinda wierd how she was never into singing and more into drums even though she could be labeled as the most gorgeous voice in music history...a person like her only comes once in a century or 2

I know that Karen died, but that doesn't means carpenters sound "died",it's eternal.Their music saved the celestial Karen's voice, so she never died really, she is in my heart.
I think that nobody can imitate well The Carpenters. They are my favorite music band, I love The Carpenters!
peacklesforever 3 years ago 2
I think that in an aspect the Carpenter sound died with Karen. There has not been to this date any woman who can match her voice and there also has not been any duo that has the sound that her and Richard did together.
I really dont think that there ever will be again. All you have to do is listen to todays music to see that it is no longer about the quality of the music, only about how much money they can make from it!
THEBEASTOFOLD 3 years ago 4
You don't understand my answer, I just want to say that they are my favorite music band. I really don't care about your opinion.
peacklesforever 3 years ago
My response was directed to you because i completely understood your statment. The recordings may go on but the sound died with her when she passed because no one will ever be able to match it so hence the sound is not eternal.
You know what they say. Opinions are like assholes and every one has one. Just some assholes are bigger than others and i bet yours takes up 2 chairs!
THEBEASTOFOLD 3 years ago 3
obviously like a fingerprint the exact same voice cannot be repeated again-there is only ever one of each person forever. Its a huge pity that the whole idea that a woman has to be slim to be considered beautiful isn,t gone

the narrator is very annoying, she sounds like in a fecking commercial for ice cream.

30 something female BBC narrators and producers have very little talent. But they are the flavour of the month.

Best Voice EVER. End of Story. Richard is a an amazing talent as well. SO much talent in one family. Just down the street from the Beach Boys, too. God, to have been living there in the early sixties.

Has anyone else noticed how similar Shania Twain's voice is to Karens?
ceedoubleyou 4 years ago
I appreciate your opinion, but I don't think there's any similarity. Not just in their voices but in their worth and ability to sing in general. Karen is incomparable.
mka800 3 years ago 2
No, not really. Sheryl Crow, however, did a cover of 'Solitaire' on the 'If I Were a Carpenter' album, and while it wasn't similar to Karen's, it was still a decent version.
CrescentNoon 3 years ago
They have completely different styles and I've never heard Shania sing any of Karen's songs, but if you listen to their voices, IMHO they have a very similar sound .
ceedoubleyou 3 years ago
Nothing compares to the sound of Karen Carpenter. It always brings a smile and you always remember where you were in life when you hear her voice.
