Adam and Lilith are not actually angels in any religion I know of. In certain text, Lilith is described as a previous wife of Adam, being equal in status to Man instead of being subservient to him.

Why they chose those two to be the First Progenitor's of Life and Death on Earth MIGHT be related to that, but I don't think they had any actual idea of what they were doing.

@SonofAbel Remember that there aren't eny religious meanings in evangelion, they're just there to look cool. The religious names have nothing to do with the actual story.

@CodenameBourbon There are religious references because i mean it's "Angels" and "Adam" but they are codenames used by Seele and Nerv to identify the aliens. They are references but you don't need to know any religion to understand the story. They're more like smart allusions. How do any actual biblical angels have to do with humanity fighting aliens?

@OMLRUSSEL the story is based loosely on the religious references so to speak. but I already know quite a bit of evangelion. so no thanks. such EVA=EVE, dead sea scrolls are acknowledge in real life. lance of longinus supposed was the lance killed jesus the christ. angels named after angels, etc etc. this anime changed a lot from it's development. but hey, it worked out!

Lilith is not an Angel at all...The Second Angel is "Eve" (Rei). Watch episode 24, It's pretty clear, if you pay attention to whats going on. Bare in mind that its stated numerous times throughout the series (and movies)that Lilith spawned all angels AND humanity. And with Adam in his "embryonic state" the idea of the egg before the chicken is moot.

actually, Lilith is the second angel. "Eve" is unit 01, the only eva not "born" from Adam, and Rei, who is merely a clone, so to speak, of both Lilith and Yui (the legs coming out of Lilith' torso are pieces of Reis being created, her soul is Yui's). All of the angels (except Lilith and the lilim) and evas 00, 02-13 were born from Adam who originated in the white moon (in Antarctica). Lilith and humanity were born from the black moon (under Tokyo 3). They are both called angels in NGE

@Bane2100 Lilith spawned the primordial soup and therefore homo sapiens like us. Adam spawned the Angels not Lilith. In the show, Adam and Lilith are incorrectly named the 1st and 2nd angels because to Nerv and Seele, they were the first alien-looking things found.
