Beautiful video - I am so glad to say I have been fox hunting in Britain! Makes it all worthwhile and I feel very happy and love the traditional aspect of it! This shows how timeless hunting is - wonderful!
Some people were commenting about the riders' seats... the horses look gaited to me, so the way they're sitting farther back is probably the same idea as in modern Saddleseat. Really cool video by the way. :)
@beagleman123456789 Thanks. Can you tell me anything more about it? Do you recognize the town they go through first? How can you tell it's Monmouth County? Is that the group, the Monmouth County Hunt?
Looks like the fox hunt is in Navesink. It has been going on over there for years. At least I remember it was in the 1980"s and 90's when I lived there. It was great fun to pile your friends in a car and take part in the festivities.
i love old movies, thanks. there is a fox hunt in far hills that has been going on for generations but now just a horse race. it's fun to see what it would have been like bake in the day when it was a real fox hunt. it still is a huge deal each year but nothing like the old days i'm sure
Wow, I gotta say, purely for the evocative, dreamlike footage, this is a fabulous video. I'm not saying I want to kill foxes, just that this footage is amazing to me... thanks for posting...
Thank you. That is the nicest thing anyone has said about all these movies shot by my grandparents. I have been impressed by them too. I am glad others see their value.
Thank you for posting this. My husband and I are historical reenactors and we're learning to fox hunt. It's fascinating to see the differences and the similarities of fox hunts years ago. What nikkiportia says about "hunting seat" is right. It's so cool to see that difference in action.
The way the riders are sitting is known as the 'hunting seat' it was supposed to be a more comfortable way of crossing country whilst hunting. Unfortunatly, it was not as comfortable for the horse, who would find it very tiring! Modern hunters tend to adopt a more 'forward seat' to save the horses back, although many old huntsmen still ride this way.
I had not seen this before and am grateful to you for making it available. It's good to see that things don't change too much - let's keep it that way!
Thanks! A friend who rides horses mentioned that the riders seem to be sitting further back in the saddles than they do these days... Is there anything else you notice?
Hopefully this will soon be given to the NY State Historical Association.

Thank you. I'm glad that people can find things in them that are useful. I still can't see any difference in how they sit but I'm not a rider...
