Heh, for the circle motion? Do you -see- him sneaking a stick between two cymbals an inch apart to hit another buried beneath them? I think accuracy on a huge target like a snare is um... not an issue? Portnoy is probably the best drummer in the world. The only exception -might- be Neil Peart, but he's more accurately a percussionist, not a pure trap drummer.

Rush and Pink Floyd started the Progressive music genre. Then in the 80's, Dream Theater and Queensryche made sort of a progressive metal genre and anything after that couldn't really fit in to any genre of prog. Every single Progressive metal/rock band is very different.

the first rush album was released in 1974

according to me the rock progressive genre was started by king crimson in 1969 with "in the court of the crimson king"

The funny thing about this is that this is probably the easiest DT song to play on drums lol I can play this song almost perfectly because its really not that hard, but most of DT's songs are just crazy. For instance, Octavarium is a freakin 23 minute song! The drum parts don't sound that hard but when you try to play it you get mixed up with all the odd time signatures and when to play what fills! I can easily say that Portnoy is ONE of the best drummers out there. Best Prog drummer for sure.

lol dude Rush is not Prog. What sets Prog apart from other genres is it's long songs with polyrhythms and odd time signatures. Listen to Dream Theater, Symphony X, Opeth, etc. if you want prog.

Why is everyone so angry about whos the best? No ones the best, just good at their own thing. Look at Joe Russo from Benevento/Rousso Duo, or even one of my professors at Berklee! I can play the Rock Band Part and dad can actually play this, the rock band is a bastard but man this will kill you on real drums, its way tougher and it wears you out. A ton of fun on the foot, right hand alternates near the middle-end though.
