1980's brainwashing. Thank you Transformers and Starscream :)
I have always had a soft spot for the F-15C and E models. They just look the part and get the job done. Probably the last of the 'real' fighters before going all furtive and lo-radar signature. I would still donate a nut to fly in one!
@sashkagruzinsky Well with the Air Force, but I understand what you are saying. The F-22 is a great plane too, but the price tag is so ridiculously high that the Department of Defense cancelled the F-22 program. I am pretty sure that the Joint Strike Fighter(F-35) is doomed to meet the same fate.
@sashkagruzinsky Yes, it's unfortunate. They kept over-running their budget and the price of the planes kept going up, so Secretary of Defense Robert Gates cancelled the program. What's even more sad is that Boeing has a "refurbishment" package for the F-15Es called the "Silent Eagle," which lowers the aircrafts radar signature, employs internal weapon stores, and also increases range and it's aerodynamics(slightly) for a cost of around $100 Million dollars(as of Sept. 2009).
Watching those viking launches by Eagles (going straight up as soon as the wheels cleared) was a regular occurance at the 'bury. More fun to watch was when Eagles and Tigers (F-5E's) would land together and try to keep the nose gear off the ground as long as possible until they lose airspeed and the nose dropped. He who touches the nose gear on the ground first looses.
