Not sure if he graduated or not (it's hinted at that he has in some voice albums) he runs off with Kanan looking for a place where people wouldn't know about their taboo relationship so that they could live a peaceful life.
They were separated around the age of 3 when their parents got divorced, Hakkai was with his mother while Kanan was with her father. At the age of 5 Hakkai was abandoned by his mother for reasons unknown and found by his neighbors only to be sent off to an orphanage. He stayed there until somewhere between the age of 13-15 when he went off to graduate school. It was there that Kanan and Gonou were reunited.
Okay here's the by and by straight from the lips of Kazuya Minekura for all those of you who need more info on Hakkais Past.

Hakkai (Gounou) and Kanan are brother and sister. Acctually Hakkais the older although it seems in most asian cultures with twins the younger is usually called the older. (Don't know why Konhyaku points this out in her livejournal posts).
first one episode in reload they said she's horrible at cooking second their brother and sister thats just gross ( they say their brother and sister in the manga )

@Kuroiseki the anime says she was his lover though she was, at times, like an older sister. The manga actually states that Kanan was Hakkai's older sister
Well I can't blame Hakkai for wanting to slap the fake Kanan after all The real one did kill herself regardless that Hakkai would have still take care of her and her child. Oh sibling love really hurts.
i know it isnt, but still.......for him to even slap an illusion of her seems kind of harsh even for Hakkai.....i dunno, it just took by surprise even if it is an illusion

kanan is his older twin sister separated from birth they met at the orphanage where hakkai grew up.
