Portugal te adoro! One of the most beautyful places of the world. If you are interested in more nice places of Portugal you can see a nice animation of typical portuguese houses on my account or look for " casa portuguesa animation "
hi all, i m natural of another part of portugal but i live in Sintra for about 10 years now and i really love this village. It is nice to see so much people that like this piece of heaven... i wich i had lived here 1 century ago....
The Castle was only conquered in legend since the first king of Portugal being a templar brother was able to persuade the mourish equals (cause the castle at that time was a fusion of castle and temple, being their inhabitants the same as templars but islamic) not to engage war, only furder south, in lisbon war and siege hapend!! But the visigoths were hardly ever present in Sintra!!
Went to Sintra last week and the whole of the mountain was in a big, windy cloud. Very atmospheric indeed. If you have the energy I would recommend that you walk the long way up to the castle, along the road. Very peaceful with some enormous trees and boulders.
@MrGondomil , nooo it's a MOURISH castle, as the name itself indicates ("Mouros" = "Mourish" in portuguese). Just check it's history on wikipedia... and u'll find anything about it...;)
I've read it was occupied by the Moors during the Christian reconquest of Portugal, and was therefore called the Moor Castle, or Castle of the Moors, but the actual structure was built at least an earlier version by the Visigoths. For example, the Castelo de Sao Jorge in Lisbon was built by the Visigoth kingdom in the 5th century and later occupied by the Moors about 800 a.d. much of the area was previously a Visigoth stronghold, suggesting that the moors castle was also of Visigoth origin.
There's actualy an even older origin to it but the castle you see today was a restauration of king Fernando (from the house of saxe-coburgo-gotha). The origins of "First temples in sintra or Cintra go way back in time" there is a old latin stone from a cibelle temple consagreted to the moon found in sintra that it's very enigmatic and states something about the river tagus prophecy of becaming the future ganges.
WOW, that is what i call a beautiful town! Lucky you who live there. I live in Sweden but still likes other countries nature and cities better. sigh....
We are traveling to Portugal in June and Sintra has been on our list of towns to visit. Now that I've seen your video of beautiful Sintra, I know that we will be certain to go there. Thanks, Lucinda
Then you must visit the breathtaking park "Quinta da Regaleira"! Search for a video here on youtube, or Google images. It is the most magical place on earth!
my husband & i went to europe for 3 months, saw 16 countries. but i never heard of sintra until i noticed it in a guidebook. i loved sintra so much i went there twice during the trip! one of the most beautiful magical towns in the world with all those palaces, green space and the atlantic ocean beyond. it's so under the radar, i can't believe there's not too much more hype about it
Oh, sincerely, as a Portuguese, I desperately hope, that there's no hype at all about Sintra, formerly Cintra! You liked it, because it is, what it is! Imagine, you would have been there and had encountered a place packed with people, expensive, exclusively touristical! THAT would be the death of Sintra! Lets leave it in her deep sleep, although Sintra has, regrettably, awaken already
@fuzzysaunt I'm from Portugal and i live near Sintra. It's beautiful i know, and i spend most of my time there. Do you know Quinta da Regaleira? It's very beautiful and magic too... All the village seems like a fairy tale :)
@lupumlisboa i went to Quinta de regaleira. it was a very lovely bewildering place with the masonic themes and symbolism. i had the gardens to myself. however i remember being scared because there was a lone male tourist in the gardens also and i thought something would happen to me but i was so enchanted by the gardens i tried not to let my fear take over and i ended up ok. perhaps a benevolent fairy of the Quinta was protecting me.
Oh yes! you have a GOOD future for a professional video-maker:) Just need equipment more serious and .... a tripod;) to prevent shaking... But Well DONE!
