Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, interesting that the acronym for Mutually Assured Destruction is MAD, it's masness for sure and the fact that venal and dishonest politicians get to decide when to use the weapons is really MAD.
@1947TonyF - absolutely.... and use them they did. Have you ever seen the map of fallout from the tests at the Nevada Test site? Just go to wikipedia (Nevada Test Site) and check out the red, white and blue map for "I-131 Fallout Exposure in Rads" ... one of the biggest non-secrets in US history, imo... Half the country got hit with fallout. We fucking bombed ourselves, as did the Russians, Chinese...
I saw this film when it came out and it changed my life forever. When I was young I was in the Police and was sent off for 'civil defence' training with the army, which included firearms training. We were told that it was in case of a nuclear war, we all assumed that it was to stop or deter looters. I later found out that we were trained to shoot the survivors who there were not enough medical facilities to take care of or who were close to death. Devastating. Lifelong member of CND.
Really nicely done. As others have said, I've been a big fan of the Dead's E72 version for a long, long time. Nice to hear what influenced the original songwriter. Nicer still to see On the Beach and your editing skills in putting it together...
one of my favorite songs of all time. I rocked my newborns (2 of them) to sleep to this song nightly in hopes that they would absorb some of the humanity and carry it into their lives. thanks for the post; this is my 2nd favorite version but my most familiar.
Has anyone ever heard the Dew from June 24, 1983 in Madison, WI ? I have it on tape but could not find it on Youtube. It is a soaring and heart rending epic jam. Brings tears to mine eyes every time. The renditions here are splendid too. kb
NICE!!! Five Stars. ***** Almost 30 years of never really knowing what the song was inspired from and placing my own interpretation upon the lyrics and feeling of the song for so long, it's great to see this montage.
I always just imagined walking out into a morning due, one that may not be there forever so enjoy it... The same kind of theme came through with this clip, adding some more realism with place, time and conflict. Now I have a new perspective to view the song through.
Thanks. This was sad, beautiful and important. The movie always moved me. How could it not? This version of Morning Dew from Europe '72 did the same. Again, how could it not?
You've brought them together wonderfully...almost as they might always have been meant.
my favourite version from the 1972 European version. That triple album was fantastic! It was live (and if I remember correctly) done over in the studio for extras.
@WeirFaithful - unfortunately, yeah, i think so. We've been living in a very "close to the edge" period of time on this planet. Not just human history, all life on the earth has been and will continue to be effected by our actions- wise and ignorant...
@PubliusNV - thanks. I very much appreciated our conversation (elsewhere) where you initially mentioned the connection. Did you read the interview with Bonnie Dobson where she talked about how Dew relates to the movie?
@chasefukuoka61 Yes, and thank you so much for including the link(s). I remember very well the drills we did as children in elementary schools to "duck and cover". The fears of a nuclear war were very real in the late 50s and early 60s, peaking I think with the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Her song was a true reflection of the times, and IMHO the Dead gave her song a wider audience than she could ever have hoped for on her own.
@PubliusNV - True. And in fact its been covered by a wide range of musicians. The Jeff Beck Group did a great cover in the late sixties, with Rod Stewart on vocals.
@chasefukuoka61 Certainly the song is open to various interpretations, as she stated in the interview, and is exemplified by the 1974 argument about it I had and related to you elsewhere. That, I think, only makes it more powerful and accessible to more people.
@PubliusNV - I think so too. And it still speaks to our times today. At the end of the video I included images of grieving Israeli soldiers and Palestinians. These kinds of fears (and realities) are still very much with us.

@rcameron3 - thank you. It was a bit of an epiphany to see the correlation between the song and the movie, so i'm just glad that i could share that.
