  • lol @ 8:30... "SURPRISE MOTHERFUCKER!!!" And to those debating the abilities of each vehicle, as diabel1969 said, it clearly is not in stock configuration, especially given the plot of the movie, he is a top professional wheelman, I highly doubt he'd run off the lot cars, they'd surely be upgraded and customized.

  • an owd trans am cant get away from grandad's old truck, glad i got a truck now

  • Bullet, schmullet! This movie sets the bar! Holy sh_t!

  • Seems like every other movie I watched growing up in the UK was a road movie or had a car chase scene, I loved everyone of them, with those incredible cars and the loud roar they made.

I watched them little knowing that in the future Japanese cars fuel costs, and how people veiwed the automobile in general blaming it for all the worlds ill's would change it for ever.

Now im in my 40's and own a 71 Chevy C10 454, and I drive around the streets of England like i'm in my own American road movie.

  • I know everyone is ogling the cars but the girl in the pickup is far prettier. Anyone know her name so I don't have to trawl thru IMDB?

  • what is the name of this movie? looks hella cool

  • where was this filmed?

  • wait a 454 puts out like 450 horsepower and at those times they under estimated it. possibly 500 horsepower. My 302. mustang gt puts out 250 stock. So i think your way off dude. Besides its a movie..

  • The pickup sounded like it had a huge aftermarket racing cam.

NOTE if your going to use a gun to shoot at a perusing vehicle,

shoot the radiator, that will stop any car every time guaranteed.

right away there is a lot of hot steam in their face, and slippery antifreeze under their wheels, a moment later their engine overheats loosing more and more power, the harder they try to run it, the sooner their engine freezes up!

  • the trams am driver look like johnny depp

  • now if ryan had a 78 little red 360 or a 79 GMC Amarillo 454 prototype it could have been a shorter chase.

  • One of the best car chase oriented movies ever made hands down. One of my personal favorites of the 70's!!

  • 1:28 driver (game) drift sound

  • they should have just gotten out of the car, and beat Ryan O' Neill to a pulp...LOL

  • one of my top 5 fave films this :)

  • SHOOT THE RADIATOR, CHASE ENDS IN ABOUT 3 MILES

  • If you are a pro and know what you are doing you can get anyone-Ryan O'Neal was a PROFESSIONAL and when you are that good you can overcome anything.

Half of the time the guys with the fast cars have nothing but speed and very little skill....the last part of the chase proves that.

  • Love the way the Trans Am dances @2.20!

  • Those old Trans Ams would corner at over .8 Gs. The pickup is probably capable of cornering at aroud 1/2 the speed of the Trans Am. It's basic physics. Just keep to a course with tight corners, and the truck will be miles behind you in a very short time.

  • @8:42.......that was a hell of a flip that Pontiac did!!

  • Now that is a car chase! I wish there were more like it

  • charger or mustang wuldve left that truck

  • missed the best part out ... where he said 'go home' to the other driver ? otherwise great clip!

  • is that the final chase scene

    its fucking awesome =)

  • They don't say a word while driving lol!

  • @Insanity2Fevr That's old films, now everyone scream a lot. '-'

  • Good chase, shit cars.

  • Pontiac Firebird <3

  • how can a pick up truck go that fast to catch up with a sports car? maybe that truck has a hemi? idk

  • the T/A has a problem with taillights LOL

  • Looks like O'Neil did all his own driving

  • 1979 was the last year of the Big Blocks for 1/2 Ton pickups. The 454 was rated at 240hp/370lb/ft. Compared to the 400 in the TA which was 220/320. They were both running around 15.50's in the quarter, and the truck was emissions exempt as it was a "heavy half" to get around it. GMC made a Street Coupe and Chevy made a Sport that were both availible with 454s so running off and leaving a Trans Am wasn't out of the ordinary. (this truck in the video has a SBC most likely though)

  • @7387chevytrucks Only one problem with that idea. Those old chevys will roll over like they want their belly to be rubbed if they have to make a turn. No way they could keep pace with a trans am if there was a turn.

  • @blah666ful I have to disagree with them wanting to "roll over" I own and drove mine in the late 80's and turns weren't a problem, and keep in pace with any car of the same general era wasn't an issue, I drove several T/A's during that time, handling wasn't their forte.

  • @blah666ful If you look at the truck, it's been lowered, with a manual tranny 3 on the tree, and if you listen to it, it's a built small block. That truck was built to handle, and is nowhere near stock. This movie wasn't depicting "stock" off the showroom vehicles.. This movie was about a "Driver".. which actually the video games series "driver" was based upon this movie..

  • @7387chevytrucks That's also an early 70s trans am. It's got either a pontiac 400 or a 455. Not that gold and black smoky and the bandit piss ant with an olds 403 in it. It's a real trans am.

  • @blah666ful That is a 1976 Trans Am. If it had a 455 HO as offered, it was packing 200hp, 40 less than the pickups 454, the 400 was much more matched with 220. The truck in the movie is either a 1973 or 1974, still out powering the Pontiac if both had top of the line motors. It is also lowered significantly in the front which helps handling tremendously. Of course this is a movie so... In reality, with the right driver a Vette could be maneuvered by a Yugo.

  • @7387chevytrucks The 455 was never about power. It was about TORQUE, which it out shined the 454 in. The 455 pontiac only had 315 hp in it's strongest form, but it had more than 500 lb/ft of torque. That being said, you're right, but for the wrong reason. A big block could never catch a small block in a cross town race like that. A big block transam would be at a disadvantage but it would still outrun your hypothetical 454 truck. The 400 would feed it tail lights in a situation like this.

  • @blah666ful what do you mean a big block could never catch a small block in a race? I run a small block and have beaten many big blocks with it, but the only way I get them is off the line and the first 2 gears. Once a big block starts rolling, it will catch a small block and will pass the small block. in all the races I ran against big blocks, i was there first, but they were gaining in a hurry.

  • @7387chevytrucks The car with the highest horsepower doesn't always win a street race. The DZ302 says HELLO Mr. Big Block, now you gonna lose!

  • @blah666ful The DZ302 never beat a big block in it's life in stock form. You really need to do some homework. The DZ302 was built to run trans am racing. In stock form, the 302 vs a stock chevelle 454, or even a buick GS 455 would have gotten smoked on a daily basis. i've seen it happen. the 302's charm was it could rev..

  • @blah666ful it's a 76 trans am to be specific with a funky paint job on it. The smokey and the bandit original 1st movie was a 77 hurst hatch top trans am also with the 400 in it. the olds 403 didn't come into play until 1979. The 2nd smokey and the bandit movie wasn't even a 403, it was a turbo 301 car.

  • Just listen to those secondaries open on them Rochester

Quadrajet carburators back in the day.....

  • is this like the same as the game?

  • saw a elky at 3:24!!!! yay!!=D

  • y is he chasing the truck

  • This movie clip gets me into the mood of playing Grand Theft Auto.

  • good scene car chases arent done anymore

  • What was the point of buying an old fast car back then if it couldn't even out run a TRUCK? o.O

    (Pats his Audi S4 B8)

Don't worry baby... that will never happen to you... ;)

  • @Bisynchronous

    Haha

Well, in all fairness, that Firebird is one of the smog dogs and that truck was pretty damn healthy. (Did ya hear the cam lope when it was idling in the warehouse?) But yeah, you sure wouldn't expect a truck to keep up with what was marketed as a hot car back then.

  • soo.....reminds me of Tanner......

  • driving a truck is not easy

but again mr o'neal outdoes himself

it takes real skill to drive that truck

the trans am kept fishtailing at times while the truck handled very well

  • in 1979 GMC built a rare prototype called "Armarillo" it was yellow, stepside, 454, 4spd & in Silverado trim (when that meant something) & came fully equipped. Too bad it never went in production, it was quicker than the Little Red Express truck. Hell, a Little Red would have been a better chase truck.

  • FREEWAY IS ALL YOU NEED------HE WOULD GRENADE AT 90 FLOATING VALVES IN THE TRUCK

  • How the hell did that Chevy hang with that Trans-Am?!

  • Another glaring disadvantage the C-10 would be strapped with here is the column shifted manual 3-speed. Absolutely the worst choice for use in a car chase. Clumsy as hell.

The T/A having an automatic is head & shoulders above the pick-up.

  • ....as nice as it is, that C-10 wouldn't touch the T/A...

  • This is what I call "old school". :))

  • Best car chase ever for me vs bullitt, ronin, french connection etc which I still like.

Interesting how the chev truck handled so well on corners-must have been well set up

  • That looked like a 76 trans am to me in the movie.

  • that guy is a terrible shot.....could have at least taken the radiator out.....LOL

  • I have this movie and I love it

  • Yeah right that Chevy truck could handle like that and keep up with a Firebird!

  • @njot33 Dude, The Chevy has a 454, modified trans and rearend + suspension mods.

  • @mrmojo3200 That's far from a convincing argument.

A 454 is just going to make it nose heavy, and handle even worse. No matter how much suspension mods, half ton pick-up is still inferior to F-body. And the Firebird could well be equipped with a 455, so that erases your horsepower advantage.

Film editing is the only thing that kept the Trans Am from totally loosing the truck in the first ninety seconds.

  • they used several trucks for this footage 4 sure! :)

  • whhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeee thatl get the sparks going

  • wow what a pussy in the trans am cant drive good enough to get away from a TRUCK! so he has his jewfro boyfriend shoot at em

  • 4:12 i unload my clip into the back of his hot ass head & that would be that.

  • NICE.

  • good times

    i wasn't even born xD

  • finally a good video of a car chase from driver! it seems that people on youtube are incompitant at making good chase scenes in that game, so this move scene does the trick!

  • nice shes leanin into the turns HOT :)

  • So great. No stupid fast and furious fast motion effects, just pure driving!

  • Comment removed

  • The tunnel they drive in at around 3:30 isn't that the same tunnel used in The Terminator from 1984?

  • @Eskidead ..Yes sir, third street tunnel downtown Los Angeles.

  • @Eskidead 2nd street tunnel in downtown L.A. Also seen in "Blade Runner", "Alien Nation", "Lethal Weapon 2" and "Money Talks".

  • Crucial bit missing from the end of this. The guy with the gun gets shot and the driver just says "I just do the driving man, I ain't got no part in anything else". Ryan just says "go home, kid" and he runs off.

  • love the 76 trans am

  • wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • if the dude had shot at the radiator instead of carly simon there, the truck would've seized in five minutes

  • The 'bird could have been a 455SD car.

  • Go home.

  • if you listen carefully you will remark that a lot of sound effets from this movie are also heard in the game on psx DRIVER (1999)

listen to the tyre sounds at 1:27

  • @koums94 Good ear, I still play that game here and there.

  • they could have make it more real at the ending

  • Walter Hill makes me so (\_/)

    {o|o} O

  • Isabelle Adjani ("The Girl") is just smokin' hot!

  • would of been nice to see a 69 chevy Chevelle with a 454 motor

  • like those tough old birds

  • haha so nice no word from the woman :D

so old but still so nice. <3

  • very very good.

  • Oh yeah baby! Now this is my kind of chase right here. No special effects...no blue screens...just two guys in high-powered muscle machines goin' head to head...and two drivers with top notch skills! Classic!

  • @redplaguethe3rd the new chases aren't all bad. TVR Tuscan Swordfish, Quantum of Solace Aston Martin are just a few but these old ones fucking rock.

  • @torontosmoker

Well yeah, that's true. And you're absolutely right...back then, the director didn't worry about wrecks and stuff cause he's like, 'their insured and we're just gonna wreck the vehicles anyway. So long as the public loves it, nothing else matters.'

  • This is like the 7th movie i have seen that involves this tunnel at 3:11, in every LA chase in that period.

  • cool scene, did the video game DRIVER have any direct correlation to this movie, because that video game was one of the best games ever made in my opinion

  • @downeyfan20 The game Driver was heavily influenced by this movie. This, Bullit, and the French Connection all had tie-in's to the game.

  • No pickup is catching ANY sportscar any day of the week unless that sportscar has 4 blown tires, then MAYBE the pickup catches it. It just ain't happening! Pickups are heavy, aerodynamically bad for speed, not geared for acceleration. They're good for hauling manure though!

  • that trans am is far from a sports car. its actually got more in common with that pickup than sports cars. big v8 RWD, keep in mind 6.6ta's only had like 200 horsepower, and it weighs almost as much as the truck. the truck looks to be lowered and the engine is built so besides dealing with the light rear end on the truck that would like to slide out, this chase scene is quite realistic for the truck to be catching it.

  • classic scene great flick..

  • Hell of a chase, but I'd be lying if I'd say the pickup truck didn't look just slightly ridiculous in a full-throttle adrenaline rush chase like this one.

BTW, was the Trans Am stick or auto? I didn't notice.

  • 1975 OR 1976 TRANS-AM WHAT A SLOW CAR.

  • I've watched this chase scene So many times! I absolutely LOVE that truck!!!

  • Now.. thats the car I like. Its RED and I can slip my bike over the rear!!!!( Of course its a truck)

  • Saw this twice at the theatre in '78, always liked the trim ring coming off at 0:47.

  • Love it! My first truck was a '76 Chevy C10 Step-side w/a 350. Didnt have side pipes, tho

  • why is the pontiac t/as rear tailight (on the right side) partily out on some of the shots?

  • continuity error.

  • tommy- You don't know the women I know then...a couple I know would be DRIVING that truck.

  • that pick up handles better than the firebird, the firebird fishtails on almost every turn.

  • The movie is about a guy I would suppose could DRIVE. It probably doesn't matter what he is driving, he will drive it better than some kid in a Trans Am who is over driving the Pontiac .

  • @skip9homer It sure looks that way, I kept thinking "Who ever set that truck up did a damn good job of it" the whole time I watched it.

  • Obviously some suspension tricks and a big block added to the step side chev PU. What an awesome chase scene! Only ONE thing not very 'realistic' about this chase scene...~~> the chick in the truck keeps her mouth shut, and lets the 'driver' haul ass??? not likely my friend, not likely....

  • is the game driver originally from a movie this 1??PLEASE REPLY!!THE WRITING IS THE SAME!

  • Yes. The game was heavily based on this film.

  • Just love that Chevy C-10...

  • @KingSams0n ...and now imagine this with a Toyota Prius...

  • i gotta get me a trans am

    phwoar!!

what a beauty of a car

  • this car chase gives thrills

only in the 70's u hav this

    props

  • love that pontiac!!

  • Petrol guzzlers or not, the Americans do make some fine rides. Hope they hold to that tradition.

  • @kwesigreat they dont most of fords line up even dodge had money probs tradition isnt good enough money talks they got to cheap

  • I love a HOT 70's Bitch that SHUTS UP while I'm on a road rage mission.

  • sorry wanted to thumb up !

  • @MontrealMan1970 sounds like my type of girl!!!

  • @MontrealMan1970 That is one of the coolest things I have ever seen written about a youtube clip. My thoughts exactly!!!! +1000

  • @MontrealMan1970 LOL

best comment ever!!!! dude thumps up for you!!

  • @MontrealMan1970 Hahahaha she just sits there and doesnt say a word
