  • Jerome Dillon is smoking the drums in this piece!

  • @ScottFairley thanks man. Will look for it.

  • trent reznor is a brilliant composer.

  • with what is Robin playing his guitar on this?

  • @vldmrhrnndz It's a Martin Backpacker travel guitar. As far as I know, they still make them.

  • @ScottFairley when he switches to electric, it's with an eBow.

  • Trent wrote this when he was contemplating suicide.

  • @dk2853 isn't, actually

  • What is the significance of the woman that appears in the panels at the conclusion of the song?

  • @GenineM

"When on stage in 2009 he disclosed that he had rented a house at the time on an ocean with the external intent to write some music, but in reality had contemplated suicide there. This song was the only song to come out of that time and place." -from NinWiki

I think the woman refers to the goddess of the ocean or maybe a nod to the woman of the song "The Fragile" who is on the brink of suicide which ties in his own struggle with suicide while living by the ocean.

  • @TheSWAFF Thank you. I have always wondered this. :) I always wondered what Fragile was about, too.... Is the woman he is talking about to be taken literally, or does this 'woman' symbolize some sort of concept?

  • @GenineM

Not really sure actually, you can take it both ways in some sense. I always took the meaning of The Fragile more literally(from a deeply personal place from Reznor's psyche) based on the opening lyrics as well as "Sometimes it's just that nothing seems worth saving, I can't watch her slip away." As for the concept I guess you can look at fragility itself and being able to recognize it in others, but being too damaged to help them or fix it. Just my take on it.

  • @TheSWAFF La Mer is Death-- a romantic, seductive, melodious, and natural personification, offering long-awaited catharsis within her depths. The Fragile elaborates on her personage. 'She shines' in a world full of ugliness: in your depression, when you can't feel you will always hear her call while standing in the shore. She is beautiful, glittering, seductive, and apparent to the senses... Our mortality adds value to the meaning of Life. Without Death there would be no meaning to our lives.

  • @GenineM

Very interesting concept, definitely fits within the idea of the whole album, may leave something to be desired for the rest of the lyrics from the song The Fragile. But, its a construct really and that's the beauty of great art! It always amazes me how well Reznor can turn a deep rooted emotion or feeling and manifest it into song, listen to the Social Network soundtrack, the vibe fits perfectly. Anyways La Mer kicks ass! Its my go to song when I sit down to play piano :)

  • @TheSWAFF I never watched the Social Network movie but I typed in Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross on my station a while back on Pandora to see other things he did. I agree that he can channel deep rooted emotions and feelings into song, but I haven't got the whole picture on the SN soundtrack yet considering I haven't watched the movie but I want to. I 'enjoy' Gentle Hum of Anxiety. Listening to it, I find personal meaning within its drone.I want to see your piano playing. :)

  • the best damb concert other than tool

  • What is that infinite sustain thing that Robin Finck is using?

  • @poshi12 i think it's an eBow

  • @OhMyGodSANDWICH It is an ebow.

  • Incredible song and DVD

  • haha i don't remember writing that

  • nickel bag anyone?

  • nickelfuck

  • their music is not shit but yes i agree it does sound the same but to me its all different this is to the comment or so i thought it was a year ago i just now saw it aka the comment I LOVE NINE INCH NAILS

  • The Sea

  • i bet it was wierd for them to play it considering this was the song trent produced for the Fragile at a very dark period in trent's life

  • Cant stop watching. I met Robin when I went to this concert. Lost my shirt during the show so I bought A Perfect Circle shirt. After the show I went to the hotel down the street and the buses were parked there...it was freezing and I was waiting for a cab sitting down by the door. Robin came out of the bus and said, "They're staying at the other hotel." I said, "I'm not trying to see them...just waiting for a cab. Great show by the way." He said, "Thanks man." Fucker didn't invite me in tho.

  • This actually woulda been perfect if he didn't cut out the first and last few seconds. This vid has the best sound quality of any of the others on youtube. Unfortunate because this is my fan nin song.

  • Yeah, just favorited this.

  • 2:15 anyone knows what exactly is tatooed on Danny Lohner's back?

  • @3zyPL i guess it says "Renholder" cos its his nickname. a perfect circle even recorded a song titled Renholer - reffering to danny :)

  • and he wrote this while being in a beach house having suicidal thoughts..

  • This was the best lineup. I really miss Danny Lohner.

  • Thank you Trent, you never stop inspiring me .40

  • Perfect song to burn one to, but still be sober enough to realize the complexity of the rythym.

  • Still to this day my favorite Nails DVD even over AVOTT. Amazing DVD. It has Easter eggs hidden everywhere in it. They're all listed on the net. Probably search And All That Could Have Been on Wiki. One of the top five Nails releases in my opinion even though the sound was edited and the video is of multiple shows edited together. It's an excellent portrayal of what its like to see Nails live. There's a killer performance of Just Like You Imagined on it I watch all the time. Looooove this DVD.

  • The one and only NIN, God of American Industrial Rock

  • they were real Young Gods...

  • GREAT!

  • The drums were so unexpected and beautiful ♥

  • @0rland0walkthrough

    couldnt agree any more

  • Fuckin' LOVE THIS!

  • I still haven't apologized to you all for my 4 posts too many ,didn't notice it then .

My PC is messed up ,so now excuse me 4 times .

  • the song is so enchanting that i started to tear up. no joke NIN for live.

  • Why is the drummer wearing face paint?

  • @Commiteee Because Jerome Dillon Is A Beast. :)

  • @Commiteee It's not face paint.

    It's coke.

  • No words in this song... Which makes perfect sense. The emotions collected in this display of sounds are so dynamic they speak for themselves.

    --Reznor fan forever--

  • love this song

  • Bottom line: Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails/Trent Reznor have and continue to change the way I perceptively view the aesthetic character of the music medium. "The Fragile" ranks to be one of the top ten most inspirational albums to me personally. "Ghosts I-IV" somewhere up there as well.

  • @tbmuex ,really makes you want to cry at the end .

Just fucking sad and frustrating .

  • @tbmuex ,really makes you want to cry at the end .

Just fucking sad and frustrating .

  • @tbmuex ,really makes you want to cry at the end .

Just fucking sad and frustrating .

  • @GiantDoucheNG maybe not the last great album but certainly the most emotional ,the first time I listened to it it completely blew me away .

Too sad he stopped touring [for now ?]

  • Everytime i hear this it just seems to make my life better trent amazing me

  • Hey Mr. Finck! Nice ebow sounds!

  • when those drums kicked in? yeah - my dick got hard.

  • @myboomstick thats it? call me premature, but i came all over

  • @myboomstick I came in my shorts.

  • it's a very beautiful song , i love this group !

  • It gets so sad at the end when he hugs the screen.

  • my god this is so good

  • The Fragile was just tops. The Slip was...pretty horrible. Keep in mind I am an avid NiN fan, but it was free for a reason.

  • @GiantDoucheNG meh...the slip is alright...i still listen to it sometimes but yea - the fragile was nin's last great album.

  • A Perfect Circle opening for Nine Inch Nails.....Can it get any better???? no people. it can not.

  • you got that right, seen them both but not on the same night. As much as I love NIN, I gotta say that APC was better live, but that's only because the sound was off when I saw NIN.

  • @nugZonFiRE It could be Tool opening for NIN!! :D

  • Nickelback???? Fuck Nickelback, that band is a piece of untalented and overproduced shit!!!!

They can't do nothing new, all their crap sounds the same!

  • @damianhess I agree 100% with you about Nickelback how are the even considered a rock band???? They dont even belong in the same category at NIN

  • @damianhess While I do disagree with your statment because I do like Nickleback. HOWEVER I don't think Nickleback and NIN belong in the same sentence. We should not be discussing anything Nickleback on this NIN video or any NIN videos for that matter.

  • @Threemiles236 Long time ago a dumbass came along and compared this song with Nick!#$#!.. He asked for it you know. And it wasn't me who started, I just pity the fools who listen and like their crap :)

  • @damianhess I pity the dumbass who would even compare them to Nickleback, especially when NIN is on so much a higher plane of musical existence. I love what my one friend says about Nickleback it always makes me laugh. A Canadian country band trying to be metal haha. You gotta love that description cuz it is rather true. I wasn't trying to rip you for it, just putting it out there for anyone in general who would read it that Nickleback has no place here.

  • you can say you're a music expert if you like this song

  • @simognr gosh... i'm smiling with my nostrils wide open now...

  • @simognr thank you lol

  • @simognr absolutely

  • Its not the fragile...

Its Into the void played note for note without all the distorted modulated midi synths..

  • it's not Into the Void either. It's La Mer.

  • the notes arranged are exactly the same as Into the void..

the first synth riff in into the void, is the first piano riff in la mer..

the basslines are identical.. its just done with a synth on into the void.. and a bass guitar in la mer..

trust me dude its the same arrangement just redone ;)

i've studied audio engineering and music theory and im also a performing musician i can pick up on these things.. ;)

  • NIN does this with lots of their songs. I can think of several examples when two NIN songs have obvious shared elements.

  • i agree, i've been a fan for a long time and have heard a hell of a lot of nails.. i also like that i learned lots of little midi and analog gear tricks while listening to Trent's Work! gotta love em live as well.. the nails put on an awesome show every time

  • @Plur307 Can you name those 7 examples? I'm just curious.

  • @NINCHAILS

    I said several, not seven...

One that comes to me off the top of my head is the piano in Closer and the downward spiral.

La mer and into the void

I know there are more I just don't have time/don't feel like sitting here and thinking of them all.

  • @Plur307 Yeah, I know you said several, i just typed 7. No big deal.

    Thanks.

  • Also, if you listen to "piggy" at 1:14 they start playing a similar pattern to the closer, downward spiral, pattern.

  • @Plur307 That's a recurring aspect of The Fragile. great album.

    La Mer is beautiful live.

  • Jesus... this gives me such nostalgia

This is definatly in my top 5 of all thier songs <3

  • 1:24 to 1:29. is The Fragile.

  • What are you talking about?

  • The background on the 3 screens is the colors of the fragile. and trent reznor said that this was the main song of the album.

  • gotcha. I thought you were saying the song was the fragile. I was confused...

  • @ nugZonFiRE

    damn you're right

    that looks amazing

and I think you're right about it being the main song of the album

I can't find the words to describe how this song makes me feel

It makes you feel complete and perfect until the last guitar suddenly stops

and you hear that its actually describing lonlyness and hollowness

like the entire album tells the story of someone who tries to escape his bad feelings but keeps falling back

    I love the fragile :P

  • love it. <3

  • I really like Jerome Dillon's style. I've never seen someone playing the drums so beautyfully. And I like men wearing make-up:)

  • I heard this song for the first time in my Humanities class today. I love this song

  • Hm you should listen to some of their other instrumentals. Just like you imagined, leaving hope, a warm place, and the mark has been made are favorites for a lot of people.

  • @FuzzyDunlop21 Just like you imagined is probably the most energetic instrumental ever. That thing brings me places.

  • wow was it the teacher who shoed it to the class?

  • @Pierceher Yeah, he showed it to us. He told us to find meaning in the song.

  • hes gotta be the coolest mofo on your university

  • @Pierceher It's at highschool

  • is was a finger up :S

  • One of my favorite NIN songs. <3

I never really like instrumental stuff until I heard Trent's.

  • Indeed, "La Mer" is far more uplfiting musically in comparison to the "Spiral"'s "A Warm Place". I'm going through a very difficult phase of my life, I've listen to Reznor's work for over a year and he (Nine Inch Nails) ranks amongst the second most inspirational band to me personally (behind Radiohead); as of now though I don't feel as inspired for his work as I did then. He's gotten me through high school though. What I love about Trent's work is he's a perfectionist in regards to craft.

  • awesome way to put it

  • Yeah man, Trent and Radiohead are the gods of alternative music. When Trent does something fucking filthy, like Happiness in Slavery or March of the Pigs or Reptile, he does it so perfectly I could cry.

  • Could NOT agree more, 100%......Radiohead and Trent Reznor truly do have modern music on lockdown, perfection.......

  • @Chrisuser8 my two favorite bands... NIN and Radiohead

  • lol

  • Drums sound awesome on this. Nice back-beat playing by Jerome Dillon.

  • Interestingly, drums were originally by Bill Rieflin, who drummed for Ministry, REM etc.

  • I caught a Ministry show with him on the kit. Very impressive show.

  • Wish the drums were a little less aggressive.

  • One of the most beautiful melodies I've ever heard. wow.

  • yes.

  • yeh i think its special, i listen to it most days, i never get tired of it.

  • I like this song as well as "A Warm Place" from The Downward Spiral

  • A Warm Place gives off a very saddening vibe though.

  • Ironically, yes

  • and when the day arrives

    I'll become the sky

    and I'll become the sea

and the sea will come to kiss me

    for I am going home

    nothing can stop me now

  • Commend my soul unto the sea once more...

  • The best song Trent Reznor ever created. Such beauty and depression mixed into this song so well everyone cannot help but be amazed by it's sheer elegance.

  • singular most beautiful piece of music ever created!

no other piece of music has ever made me want to cry, dance and smile all at the same time more than this.

    genuinley perfect in every aspect.

    my eternal applause....

  • The money I'd pay to see this song played live....

  • and i saw it for £34 last night :D

  • me too :)

  • this is the best version of this song in my opinion

  • what is robin playing at 2:20 ? what is he playing wit ?

  • that´s an ebow

  • Ebow. It has a magnet in it so the notes sustain longer.

  • I <3 this song...It is one of my favorite songs ever performed live. Gotta love T.R.!

  • omg imagine this in HD! i would cream my pants.

  • want it

  • Nice 4:3 polyrhythm when the drums come in.

  • Jerome Dillon was the best NIN drummer

  • The drummer in this performance is fuckin on spot, his look is totally Nine Inch style.

  • Jerome Dillon rocks! He's been a long time NIN drummer.

  • He used to be NIN drummer for a long time you should say

  • Right. Used to be.

  • In my personal opinion I think this is the best NIN line up and their best time as band, may be the era from 1994 to 2000 was their very best. Now at days is hard to recognize the members from today's band, except for Robin Fink and of course TR.

  • Jerome Dillon is Jesus Christ.

  • one of the best basslines ever! such a great song. my friend doesn't like nin, coming to this conclusion after hearing the hand that feeds, once, through some crappy speakers. he is one of those people who refuses to think outside the box, listening to apparently "popular" music. its comformists like him that are the reason that the music scene is flooded with such bland indie rock pop. im not gettin at my friend, he's awesome, just his music tastes

  • Wow, thats uh, very far from the real reason. You couldnt be any more wrong.

  • somebody in the audience has a bitchin' camcorder.

  • lol, not sure if that was a joke or not...

  • hahahaha i think it was.

  • Actually its a setting on his DVD player xD

My DVD player used to have that little symbol pop up.. I forgot why though o.o

    Funny comment though XD

  • The symbol on the DVD player here means that there is an alternate version of the video part of the track. Since the 3 background screens are down the DVD included an alternative video track which has a view of the screens instead of traveling around through the band. It's for the viewers who want to see what's going on behind them during the whole song.

  • @DarkKar ... its from a dvd

  • I think he's playing a Biwa or something similar. It's the Japanese type of guitar a very old instrument dating back to the feudal ages.

  • I'd pay 300 bucks to be at this concert.

  • what is that thing that Finck is playing? I want to learn it.

  • God.... i would love to go to one of their shows...

  • They are amazing live. I wish I'd gone to see them during this tour!

  • This is a beautiful song...Thank you Trent. Also a masterpiece of excellence.

  • neat he is playin' a back packer martin guitar

  • I'm glad Trent has been sober and clean for quite some time now, but looking back at some of these old AATCHB clips sometimes I think, "no junk no sole!" There was definitely something about Trent and his self destructive ways that made watching him live so riveting. Of course, I've been to a recent show this year and he's still got the magic touch and he's still FULL of energy.

  • trent never did heroine, check your facts. he did coke, and psychedellics, but from what ive heard he mostly drank.

i hear this argument a lot, but be honest, would you really respect him more if he was a 45 year old fucked up on coke and whiskey?

  • Yes, Trent was addicted to Heroine. He didn't talk about it a lot in interviews, but if you read/listen to enough interviews, he eventually does talk about being addicted to heroine. Trust me buddy, if you've ever known anyone that's addicted to Heroine (especially rock stars) Trent's behavior (especially during the Fragile Era) is a fine example of that. On the flip side, Heroine is one of the hardest addictions to overcome. So, as a fellow Reznor fan, I'm very proud to see him over come it

  • That's why he always says he was "sick" during a lot of The Fragility tour.

  • I saw a show on that tour. A Perfect Circle (pre- Maynard's political bullshitting of that band) opened for them and some of the people I was with prefered APC to NIN. Interesting to know he was kinda fucked up. The Fragile is definitely my favorite NIN record so I wonder what that says about me..

  • You couldent have said that better! Yea he was def fucked on drugs but he is a dif person with out a doubt. His new shit is still great but not classics like downwardspiral or further downthespiral or The Fragil. When he was def doing H. But I would rather see him clean in the end.

  • You're right, erasedcitizen77; he was never into heroin, it was primarily cocaine and alcohol that he abused.

  • another bass line simular to this is just like you imagined right?

  • nope thats mainly synth stuff that one

you're thinking of into the void :)

  • (at 2:05 onward) behold the mighty ebow!

    Nice.
