  • Nina Simone found the tragedy in this song. Paul Jones finds the farce.

They are both there in Dylan's original.

  • Dylan said in a 65 interview that Manfred Mann did his songs best.

  • It s refreshing and somehow sexy to see perfectly natural lovely- looking teeth which haven't been subject to cosmetic dentistry - at present everyone on tv has strange rows of symmetrical brilliant-white cosmetically altered teeth -and, like ' false teeth '- they all look alike.

  • a horrible copy of the beatles but this is horrible

  • Horrable...HORRABLE>>>>HORRABLE It's spelled HORRIBLE you poorly educated, moron.

  • She takes it just like a woman, yes, she does

She makes love just like a woman, oh yes, she does now

She aches and groans just like a woman

But then she fakes it just like a little bitch!

  • The singer (Mike D'Abo) looks like Brian (Benji Gregory) from ALF

    xD

  • There's enough Dylan for every band or so.

  • no 1

  • I knew this song was way(cant be stressed enough) to good for this band to have written

  • As underated as you can get for a band !!!

  • love the swinging london scenery...the dome of the cathedral with the scaffolding- obviously post war reno!

  • Dylan wrote some good songs, my favorite is, how would you feel

  • The bass player for Manfred Mann around this time was also the designer of The Beatles' Revolver album cover.

  • sorry but I loved it then and still love it now - so there

  • I like this song.

  • Bob's early songs should be listened to as original but his later ones (when he lost the ability to sing) are nice to hear covers of.

  • covers shmovers who cares if you like listen to it if you dont like it move on one day i like this version one day i like dylans who cares but ourselves

  • i love manfred mann's music, even if it is not his, but this is horrible!!!!

  • 1:38 I think I fainted...<3

  • these british scum and all british scum bands from the 40's 50's 60's 70's 80's 90's 2000's should be tracked down and excecuted

  • @MrHarry46 Who the fuck are you dont like it dont listen fuck off to where you come from u racist bastard

  • @MrHarry46 Crawl/slither out from under your stone and show yourself for the reprobate you obviously are.

  • @steaminonapuffer you seem bitter...

  • @MrHarry46 Got your attention ya redneck thug.

  • @steaminonapuffer you gained bitterness not my attention. why do you seek mens attn anyways

  • Bob > All. the end.

  • All Along the Watchtower is still the only Dylan cover that is better than the original - However this is cool. My opinion. I just happen to like Dylan.

  • Many bands including some really big named bands used dylan's lyrics and thats wat he was known for a brilliant song writer, it wasn't until knockin on heavans door did he have real commercial sucsess as a singer his peers knew the genius he was.

  • This is not the best version of this song LOL

  • I bought two days ago ORIGINAL Manfreds' vinyl album 'As Is' (1966)from flea market(paid 20 euros!).Album contains this song, and I think this is a very good version of the song,There's other good songs ,too,'Box Office Draw','Each Others Company','Trouble And Tea', for example.Vinyl works well, and sounds good,

  • and no one's mentioned Jimi's cover of All Along the Watchtower...

  • Habe noch eine Lp mit diesem lied von den Hollies.

Bob Dylan konnte wunderbare Lieder schreiben aber singen oh je

  • @shamgarus2 shut up idiot

  • Thank you Manfred Mann for singing this properly.

  • what's wrong? couldn't say thw word "amphetamines" should have been at 0:39 in the lyric. Paul Jones should have been HUGE

  • @12347771 second verse you knob!

  • @10TJ10

    Ooops!

  • Thank Manfred mann for the song and the opportunity for Dylan to take it to another level. The two were from different times at the same time. Thank you both for Mighty Quinn as well.

  • Good Me mate Mick Morrissey would ave loved this god bless him xx

  • they do a good cover

  • Bob Dylan certainly made money and careers for a few bands. this lot of chancers included

  • interpretations like these really remind you of how important Dylan's voice and persona are to the whole feel of his songs.. I mean, listen to the original and you've got that attitude and feeling that what he's singing about is something real, every snarl and groan filled with that crazy "what're you gonna do about it?" spirit of his - wheras this is so poppy and generic that it wouldn't really matter what the lyrics are. I mean, Mann's facial expressions just don't fit here.

  • If you tried to play in the open like this today without a licence and permission from the blue meanies in Parliament the anti terrorist squad would cart you off to jail. Britain has got so screwed up since these great days and its all because of lefties and their sick social control programs.

  • love love j adore sublime ..1000******** super karine

  • Bob dylan is a good songriter but he can't sing. He sounds like a crow.

  • @hopop313 Have to agree dylans nasal whine cannot be called singing, dylans greatest songs are sung by other singers

  • Not as good as the great man!!!!!!

  • sounds like a under aged sex song as its relating to a girl then a woman ? if so sick song

  • Good And Happy old times.

  • This may sound a little anal but I actually think that discussing who does a better version of a song is a bit like saying Picasso would have done a better job of Van Gogh's Starry Night or Degas a better job of Edvard Munch's 'The Scream" The discussion is all BS.

  • I bow to your expertise in all areas anal.

  • Words can be such a bitch. Sounds like you a going to bend over and take it up the $%#@&.

  • Again, all that are on this forum bow to your expertise in the field of anal experience.

  • @kingarthuruptheanus why do you always leave off the first part of your name? All, in this, and other, forums, bow to your bottomly experiences - you are the lord of anuses

  • Because that is my perrogative and being the Lord of anuses, I accept your humble servitude.

  • pretentioUs lol

  • Why do people say Dylan can't sing. He sings just fine. Just coz it aint all polished and neat dosn't mean a thing. His songs were not meant to be all polished and neat. Anyone remember the Hollies screwing 'Blowin In The Wind' and making it sound like pop trash.

  • They say he can't sing because he is tone deaf. He is sharp or flat on every note. His following is totally among others with a Tin Ear. That is why.

Don't give up your day job!

  • To make the kind of claims you make using the anonymity of YouTube has to be the height of arrogance. Please send me a demo of your obviously fantastic voice. Lets just say "Your taste is all in your mouth."

  • I wonder if Mike Myers`s character in the " Austin Powers " movies was based on anyone in this video . ( Wink, wink, nudge , nudge . )

  • Great song by a great band, keep up the performing guys

  • i feel bad for dylan haha... he's had so many of his songs covered, some of which turned out to be more popular than his originals, especially in today's generation, and even though i'm sure he's legally credited for them, he just doesn't get the recognition :(

  • Alicesqueeks - That's because Dylan couldn't sing (he certainly couldn't hold a note, that's for sure)... Whilst he wrote many "catchy" tunes, and even some meaningful songs, when it came to performing them, he was always roughshod and barebones; so it makes sense that when other - more musically capable - bands performed them, people appreciated them more.

Having said that, this particular rendition is atrocious...

  • Disagree completely! Dylan doesn't need other musicians to play his songs to be appreciated by milliions of fans throughout the world. "Catchy" tunes are for bubble gum musicians that people like who listen to cover songs, and don't appreciate, or understand, greatness. If I wanted to hear a beautiful singing voice, I will listen to crooners, or opera singers! That's not the point of Dylan or rock musicians in my opinion. Dylan's delivery of his lyrics....

  • his style of voice, delivery was incredibly unique. But since he wrote songs with such depth, and meaning, it brought the focus on his lyrics rather than pretty cover songs glossing over the rough edges. Dylan's "catchy" songs earned him grammys, Nobel Peace Prize candidate for literature, world wide acclaim. So your "more musically capable" bands like Manfred are now working at a gas station in the country, and still playing cover songs of Dylan!!!:)

  • personally, I find his singing quite calming to listen to. He does get most of the notes. True, his later performances are kind of sloppy.

  • Lol, thats a silly opinion but I guess everyone is entitled to their own.

  • The whole bloody point of Dylan's style of protest music is to be rough and raw. How can some people be so dumb and still breath, or better still how cabn some people breathe with their head so far up their own butt. Have a bloody listen to Woody and Arlo Guthrie and maybe a little Cohen. Then when your done Janis Joplin. Some people just want to listen to groups like the Hollies turn great music into abortions.

  • lucky dylan isn't half as precious as you..

he enjoyed the schmooze others gave to his beautifully crafted songs.

the hollies? ffs, lucky they're not as pretentios as you, otherwise we mightn't have got their shimmering harmonies and more-than-a-few killer tunes..grow up.

  • You're right about those particular songs, but if you mean he "doesn't get the recognition" as a musician, than you're way off base. He has more GREAT songs than anyone can play for the next 200 years! All those people who covered his songs are just amateurs in the annuals of legends compared to Dylan. Grammys, Nobel Peace Prize candidate for literature, songrwriter legend, etc, etc. We shouldn't feel badly for Bob, but the musicians who covered him should be grateful!!

  • I don't know if you're replying to me or colkitch, but I wasn't saying he doesn't deserve the recognition, just saying if you asked mr. random joe on the street who originally did "Mr. Tamborine Man" they'd say The Byrds probably (if they had any taste in music as most my generation doesn't) Just wish more people knew the genius behind all the pop hits that people made of his songs. His are always the best versions though. In my opinion.

  • Gotcha! I know now that you were just referring to his songs that were covered, and became famous. Mr. Tambourine Man was a great example. The Byrds did a great job on the song, but I prefer the rough edges, and the extended version Dylan sang. Also, some people don't like Dylan's voice, even more, the last 15-20 years, because it's raspy. I honestly think it sounds as if he's bringing wisdom, and edginess to it. Although, I have seen him twice this year live, and...

  • but he was on a long tour, and his voice was just giving out on him. He should tour less and stay in the studio. Doesn't pay the bills though.:(

  • Lol, your obviously not from America. 9 out of ten people would know Bobs over the byrds version IMO.

  • I don't know who you're replying to, but 9 out of 10 of ANY american? I highly doubt that if you asked 10 16 year olds, they wouldn't even know what you're talking about. No, I'm not American.

  • @alicesqueeks No No No..... Dylan's version of tambourine man is 10 times more well known than the Byrd's version.

  • i love the swingin london scenery....the cathedral in the background with the post-war renovation!

  • Is it Paul Jones or Mike d' Abo singing this version? I have heard both, It looks like Paul but someone told me it is Mike who sings it both in the video and at the recording

  • It's Mike D'Abo singing and in the video.

  • @bellanita yes,it's Mike D'Abo....and a tad cuter than Paul Jones ;-)

  • Definitely Mike singing ; Paul's got a similar although very distinctive 'black' style

  • not even close

  • Oh, the irony!

  • Klaus Voorman, german-born individual of Beatle fame played in this track and is on the video! he was the bassist of Manfred Mann from 1966-69.

  • Covering Dylan is not impossible but it's impossible. He's not like Shakespeare because we don't have any recording of his work, only the plays.

It's an admirable process, covering Dylan but it's just not doing to work. But, like Shakespeare, it's a good thing to cover.

  • If you have a great voice, it is REALLY impossible to cover Dylan.

  • sorry i beg to differ dylan songs are made to be covered check out joe cockers version of this

or any byrds cover of bobs songs

or neil young cover of bobs songs

  • @sixtiesarewe The Jonas Brothers...

  • @sixtiesarewe your right cause Dylan sucks as a singer

  • @LRooster4Prez You got to be joking,Bob Dylan sang this way better, this is a horrable version.

  • @andrewbarrett42 I think YOU are joking. Dylan wrote great songs with meaningful lyrics. Unfortunately, most of the time he sounds like a street busker!

  • @sixtiesarewe Van Morrison does the best version of this song......and yeah, most covers of Dylan are better than the original; though mainly when done by acts from the same era.

  • @sixtiesarewe Nothing beats the original bob. Sorry you didn't aquire that taste.

  • @ablindboygrunt How about Jimi Hendrix, All along the Watchtower? Even Dylan liked Jimi's version better. And Manfred Mann's version of Mighty Quinn is arguably better than Dylan's. It sure charted higher.

  • @aliceborealis calm down it's called an opinion.

  • @ablindboygrunt I am calm. You are the one acting all snobby about Dylan.

  • @aliceborealis Snobby? I stated my opinion that he performs his own material best and i noted that not everyone aquires the taste of dylanesque....w/e man i'm not looking for a pointless argument. so...yeah. bye

  • @sixtiesarewe Yes, Dylan was a pop writer dressed up in folk and there are are some right Bobby Dazzlers on Blonde On Blonde! He didn't go to New York to be at the heart of the happening folk scene in Greenwich village just to be a marginalist folkie. Nor did he get a manager( and what a hustler) like Albert Grossman, so he could be precious about his songs and not pick up big publishing royalty cheques! The chap was shrewd. if that had been the case, he would have been a Nick Drake,or somesuch.

  • @sixtiesarewe Good point mate, Bobs song's are great to cover.

  • Hippies ok!!!!!Beat Ok The Manfred super!!!!!

  • How many Dylan songs did Manfred cover?

  • 147

  • cool!

  • woah i didn't know this even existed.

  • Sick masonic song

  • It's true such when such a great song is written they are seen by most as sacred. and you know sometimes it's true. Personally i see any cover of Dylan's work as a celebration of his artistry.

  • I personally love this version. But then again I've always loved Manfredd Mann. Sometimes we are very opurist in nature...and also some originals I guess should never be touched!!!!!! So I hear yer!!!

  • Bob Dylan's feel on the song, & the fact that he wrote it. There's something very magical about listening to his recordings, that transcends the chords & melody.

  • i think any cover of Dylan's work wether good or bad is a celebration of his artistry. I had the same discussion with a friend while watching a choir perform a Neil Young song. You see she was listening for Neil Young, I was listening simply to the song. Great songs can be sung by good performers. of course awful covers has been recorded in history but I don't think this one counts as one of them.

  • I'm with you. I love this version by MM. Too bad the audio quality on this is so bad. Anyone out there have a better copy? If so, pleeease share...

  • I gotta say I love this sound - booming, heavy, lots of high end. I wish they still made records like this.

  • Everybody is covering Dylan... Doing this, the only one thing that they are making it´s recognize that DYLAN IS THE ONE

  • I think its bring the lyrics to a new light, cool version

  • What the hell is that thing that Klaus is playing? If you freeze the frame at 1:51 you can clearly see that it was manufactured by Vox and has eight strings that are spaced too far apart to be some sort of electric mandocello.

  • Far under Bob's version..

  • hey look, it's Paul Rudd singing, lol.

  • thanks for posting - Manfred Mann was greatly appreciated in France ...in his time.

  • Great classic !!!! Loved this band !!

  • Thank you Bob Dylan for this song

  • @danishphoto not to insult you, but he took this from Manfred...even thoug i love both versions

  • better an end with fright, than fright without end!!!

  • Lovely song though. I like Bob singing it and Marmalade sing it good too.

  • idiot

  • Those wanks who "hate" it when bands do someone else's music- get over it. It was only AFTER this period that the record business even entertained the idea of allowing a band to play all of its own songs. The practice of covering a songwriter's songs was standard operating procedure. To slam an old band for doing it is infantile.

  • Bob always said that MM made better versions of his song than he did himself. so i guess you can't argue with that.

  • Have to agree with regentv980 .. When the Manfred were introduced to the song as a possible cover .. They all said who the fuck is that singing so crap... But at least it's honest crap ..Regards 1stclasspost

  • what's the aim???!!! the real one is a thousand times better! what a shit!

  • very nice =]=]

  • AFRICA !!!! lol

  • Is that Klaus playing guitar?

  • I like Bob Dylan's version better, Honestly. But it's a good song, one of my favorites.

  • Bob Dylan sings like a Rabbit on drugs!

  • That's why he's so great ;)

  • Where is this video shot? London? Germany somewhere? Anyone know?

  • Its London.

  • can,t you tel London

  • i enjoy many of the dylan covers from the mid-60's. my only gripe is the with the radio and record industries who insisted on gutting his songs to meet the then 3-minute rule.

in this song, the second verse and middle eight were cut. the famous example is the three verses cut from the byrds "mr tamborine man".

dylan's 6-minute "like a rolling stone" was the first crack in the 3-minute wall. however, it still took the beatles' 7-minute "hey jude" to finally break it down for all artists.

  • Ahoy, Pirates,

     Lovely boy faces! :P Jo

  • süüüß !! ♥ total süüß, ne ?!

  • thats great!thanx a lot =)

  • great video, but you're right....only Dylan can do Dylan. This is a great interpretation though

  • being a child of the 60's ---I thought I have seen almost all of the 60's video clips. Well I was stunned to come across this rare video. Love this song by Manfred Mann a lot more than how Dylan sang this song.

  • Thanks for posting this rare video. This was filmed circa Jul-Aug 1966 and I believe it is the debut video showing new lead singer Mike D'Abo (replaced Paul Jones) and new bass player Klaus Voorman (replaced Jack Bruce, who'd departed to start CREAM with Eric Clapton). Voorman, who is seen in this video in front of Manfred, is the guy who designed the fanstatic front cover of the THE BEATLES "Revolver" album - and that Beatles album came out right around the time this video was shot.

  • RIGTH MAN, RIGHT

  • I'm really curious to know how you have access to such a large collection of clips? Thanks for posting.

  • Great interpretation of the Dylan original and as Manfred Mann clips this is quite interesting to see them either not in a TV studio nor on stage. Shame the video quality is so bad. By the way, is that a smile on Manfred's face

  • no one does Dylan like Dylan himself

  • I saw the Manfreds with Paul Jones last night - amazing show with all their hits. Paul is amazing - he must be in his mid-late 60s but moves and looks like a 40 year old, what a spunk!

  • Yes, doogle. It was originally off of "As is" ca 1966

  • Thanks for answering !

  • IS this on any album by Manfred Mann ?

  • Ofcourse, G©©GLE around first,

    before asking unnessesairy questions./

  • How rude.

  • Personally i prefer the Charlotte Gainsbourg version but this is fine as wine.

  • Una delle più belle canzoni di Dylan. Ottima l'interpretazione di Paul Jones!

  • Happy days, thanks

  • There have been lots of great interpretations of this song and this is among the best.

    Joe Cocker

    Richie Havens

    The Hollies

    The Byrds

But my favorite is a live version done by Van Morrison around 1971.

  • i love this version of this song just becoz my dad used to sing it to me wen i was a baby lol aaaaaw Memories lol..x

  • I agree that this is a great version of this song..

  • best version of this song ever in my opinion.

  • I'm going to have to disagree with you, classie60. Bob Dylan himself's version at the Concert For Bangladesh is my favourite!

He sings the chorus differently, and I really dig it! :)

    Peace and Love,

    -Peter

  • I wrote "in MY opinion". You Peter are entitled to YOUR opinion so why write a reply of "I have to disagree with you"? I wasn't looking for a debate! SHEEESH!

  • What's wrong with disagreeing with somebody's opinion? haha, I'm fully aware of what you wrote, and I wasn't looking for a debate, either!

    Peace/Love,

    -Peter

  • If it's any help, Bob Dylan also thought the Manfreds did his songs best.

  • love it love it love it

  • I hope that this masterpiece will not be removed this time!!!
