@ArnoldRulesyou thats how you know hes a great creator/writter he's not just copying something from someone or himself. he's litterally creating(created) something new! hes a badass!
I don't agree with Todds philosophy of approaching comics. However, I understand where he is coming from. Style with no substances creates for Michael Bay-esque art work where there is great visuals but nothing compelling in terms of symbolism or in meaning. This philosophy is why his writing is mediocre at best. But if, somehow, style was combined with substance, where something looked cool, and had meaning, then Todd has more credibility when it comes to comics.
@SpectralViral, Except Watchmen wasn't really "known" in the comic book universe, it was known by the die hards but that isn't the demographic that buys them. People want the Michael Bay esque work because it looks "cool" and ultimately that's what sells big.
Alan moore still whent for the "big splash page" like everyone else, the only difference is that he had a deep story to tell. But like Farlane said "If they wanted that , they could read a novel". Pretty much nailed it.
@PrisonCipher Fair enough. But that attitude that Todd holds, is why most people hold comics in such a low esteem. The last quote is very very harmful to the industry. I don't know if he is on the same page as Quesada, but feel as if he should also have more open minded approach in terms of complex story telling for a much literary audience. Comics can be literature, but McFarlane's attitude towards it just pisses me off because he is just basically proving Frederic Wertham
@SpectralViral , Fredric Wertham was a PhD with a soap box, nothing more. Comics took a dive after his attempt but slowly came up again. Because in a way, wee need the placation of ultraviolence or another, to help cope with the sadness of the world. So while soccer moms may hate Mortal Kombat, they don't mind soothing their childs mind, with fictional violence.
McFarlane just lays it down on a media/Hollywood point, we all went to 300 expecting violence not a deep story.
Flashback!! I remember renting this from my local comic chop when it first came out. Was cool to see it again. I've always liked Todd McFarlane and think he's a great artist, an entertainment storytelling, and a smart businessman.
Haha Todd sounds like gda saying porn
