Retard. Yes, it was The Genesis space probe. It was on tv too. Pez thanks for remembering it. The problem was that there was an electrical problem on board the probe. The parachute was not able to deploy because it was was not getting power to fire the chute. The idea was, when the chute decelerated it enough, a helicopter was to come buy and scoop it up before it hit the ground. They did manage to recover the space dust from the collection platters.

There you have it. Not a UFO.
