When this program started in 1960, it was the first time I'd ever seen Karloff. I hadn't seen any any of his movies. He was very distingushed looking, yet sinnister at the same time.
The other anthology series "Insight",that also premiered in 1960,was more toward psychological drama with religious tones in several episodes. That show was in syndication for over 17 years. "Thriller" during Season 1 were stories full of crime and psychological terror. But its second and final season, the show switched formats towards the supernatural and tales of horror and suspense which made the censors scary.
There were other kinds of shows that were similar to "Thriller". In 1960,you had "The Twilight Zone", "One Step Beyond",and "Insight",which were all great anthology shows of the period that were around in 1960. "Thriller",and "One Step Beyond" were part crime noir-mystery/suspense while "The Twilight Zone" was more stories of science fiction and fantasy.
I used to wake up at 5:30 AM every morning to watch this show on Channel 41 when I was about 8 years old! My mom always used to yell at me to sleep longer!
The show ran for two seasons at NBC,and it was very well received in the ratings from 1960 until 1962 that produced 58 episodes, all in classic black and white and was more of the better anthology shows of the early 1960's.
This series may look and sound eerie but I hope you agree with me that it's nowhere near as creepy as Unsolved Mysteries. Boris Karloff's voice isn't as scary as Robert Stack's.
I remember watching these shows when I was a kid . They were some of the best shows that I recall from back then . When there was only 4 or 5 tv channels out there I plan to buy all these DVDS. scottgib.

i remember this series as a kid i would bought the box set but it is so expensive
i mean 17 disc couldnt they make smaller box sets ,one i always remeber was the cheaters when you wore the glasses you could really tell what a person was really thinking under their breathe boy would they be dangerous to have really good series
I do remember (barely) this show... I actually remember the comic book (published by Dell, I believe) even better than the TV show... but, Man! What a stylish way to open a TV Show!
Hey folks, I'm looking for a tv show I saw (and was traumatized by) in the late 60s - early 70s. The episode I recall involves a woman's head in a dish with electrodes and a monster in a cell that rips a guy's arm off.
@palmyrajo It wasn't a tv show. It was one of those sci-fi movies called "The Brain That Wouldn't Die". I purchased it a few years ago on amazon. It scared the hell out of me when I was a kid in the early 60's.
Palmyrajo, you are talking about an old B movie. It wasn't a tv show but they showed it on the local Saturday night B movie shows. Ours was called Chiller Theatre. The movie is called The Brain that wouldn't Die. You can actually pick up the dvd very cheap. We found it on a complation DVD of old B horror movies.
OMG it's a classic and too funny watching as an adult. The scene at the strip club and the cat fight is HYSTERICAL.
This is another fondly remembered anthology show from early 1960's network TV. I suppose the studio execs were trying to duplicate the success of another suspense anthology show of the period ("Alfred Hitchcock Presents'). What a shame "Thriller" only lasted two seasons. Couldn't ask for a better host than the late great Mr Karloff!
How true! Both shows were filmed at what was then called the Revue studio (where Leave it to Beaver was filmed too)...but actually it was part of the Universal Pictures lot in Universal City out in the San Fernando Valley region of Southern Calif. THANKS for your comment!
This was one of the first episodes of the series, originally telecast on October 4, 1960. The series started out as a anthology of psychological and "terror" stories (usually involving murder), and shifted, by early 1961, towards more supernatural and "horror" tales...
I used to watch this on WOR when I was a kid during the Seventies. Good show, especially the supernatural episodes. Besides, anything with Boris Karloff can't be bad. :-)

@rayssonation Are there other kinds of black and white that a show in 1960 might have been?

I didnt think I'd enjoy the mystery episodes (or non-horror episodes) but I think 'Late Date' is my favorite episode.

¿Habra alguna versión de este programa en español?

@ricardo364 maybe the dvd includes the Spanish dubbing. In Puerto Rico this tv show was shown in Spanish dubbing. Buscalo!

It's a shame that Thriller will always live in Twilight Zone's shadow. It deserves far more recognition.
