  • Ted Neely and Steve Balsamo are way better....least favorite version of this song by far.

  • is this a parody or what?

  • glenn is my best friend lindsay's uncle

  • @meggibecksMCRlover holy carp, dont lie? take me to meet him :L i love him so much, i have always wanted to meet him

  • Where is the beard of this Jesus?

  • Is it me, or does he put emphasis on the wrong words? Sounds a bit weird.

  • His is my least favourite version of this song, I perfer Michael Ball rendition of this.

  • Ian Gillan of Deep Purple did it best!

  • preffer the 73 version no offense this one is pretty good as well

  • Ugh, there are 2 fricking t's in "I want to know", pronounce them! 73>this

  • Micheal Ball does a better rendition of this song... That being said, this is by far my favorite version of this play...

  • This would be fun to watch if you were a dentist, I feel. (But also great singing. Really, have some awards.)

  • It´s really wonderful. What´s strong feelings. ¡¡¡ Really great.

  • good singer ,,,he should do metal

  • I don't beleive Glenn Carter. Imho, he is greate mismatch. Too sexy, smtimes too flippant, smtimes too angry to be The Son of God :((( there's no modesty, no greatness of spirit in him.

Compare his performance with another ones. There are a lot of, besides Ted Neeley.

For example there is a Russian tenor - try to search by words 'Gleb Matveichuk Gethsemane' on youtube.

when I see him performing this aria I feel as if he really becomes Jesus talking to His Father and going to die!

  • @TheSea1otter How can you be the son of god and not be angry at him? I think the difference between the god that is described directly in the bible and indirectly through the actions he either commanded or let happen is VAST. That's why I like the Neely and Balsamo version the best, they portray the "WTF is really going on here" the best.

  • The 73' version is so much better. This is. . .not my cup of tea.

  • this is one of the most beautiful songs..... ever

  • Glenn Carter <3 He has something in his eyes which makes me want to hug him :3 I love his look.

  • @ciasteczkowypotwor66 He is the UK head of the Raelian religion. They believe men were created by little aliens.

  • Stop comparing singers. Please. Glenn's voice is the polar voice of Ted's. Glenn's is very smooth and more musical theatre-like while Ted's is more husky and rustic and obviously staying true to his profession more on the rock-side for the rock-opera. Both very different interpretations to the show, also both very GOOD interpretations.

  • for all of you that say Glenn cant sing I would like to see u try and sing this song.. Its obviously difficult and I think Glenn is a great singer. The first time i heard him sing this song i was blown away at how high he hit those notes. Glenn dont listen to the haters u r a great performer and i will always love your performance as Jesus Christ Superstar! :) <3 and stop comparing him to Ted Neely both are talented in their own ways so stop comparing!

  • This guy just can't capture it. Hard to be compared to Ted Neely but Glenn Carter belongs on the JV team, Neely is starting Varsity.

  • His voice is a little too nasal when he goes for the higher notes.. Ted is the one and only Jesus in my eyes..

  • Ted is better

  • Jesus was still a man and all men fear death, but he also was worn down by the great weight on his shoulders.

  • i hate ad!!!!!!!!

  • amazing

  • No one woke up during that entire thing?

  • I like how all the Apostles are just passed out.

  • And this is supposed to be the new Jesus?? I'll stay with Ted Neeley, still nailing the job 40 years later.

  • Unfortunately its not comparable to Ted Neeley performance - he was so amazing. But for me the best Jesus ever is a version of czech singer Kamil Strihavka - amazing and powerful voice - unfortunately its not a video and it is in czech language - but just listen and compare to Glenn Carter.

  • no power in his voice

  • @CaptainBasch1 You are right - Unfortunately its not comparable to Ted Neeley performance - he was so amazing. But for me the best Jesus ever is a version of czech singer Kamil Strihavka - amazing and powerful voice - unfortunately its not a video and it is in czech language - but just listen and compare to Glenn Carter.

  • This however brilliant production, but look who did it.

  • Seen every production.

How could this be so and if happened again it would happen the same, so it is written

    What a loving god eh.

  • @SixMax418 yes... but, Jesus was still a MAN, with all man's failings and fears...

Are you not afraid to die? You're a braver man than I, in that case. And, it was displayed from JUDAS' p.o.v, that Jesus was just a man doing extraordinary things.

  • nothin' compared to ted neely......

  • That very last note was unbelievable.

  • Okay, I know this is really random and nitpicky, but, along with thinking that Ted Neeley is SO MUCH BETTER than this guy, am I the only one who saw this and went, ". . . Why doesn't Jesus have a beard?"

I mean, really, considering the fact that He most likely looked Middle Eastern but is often portrayed as Caucasian, I know it's a small detail, but I've just always thought Jesus should have facial hair. :) Clean-shaven, He looks too much like a pretty boy from a corny boy band, haha. :p

  • @TheaterRaven Well, if they really respected all those obvious facts, the musical would be in aramaic.

  • Haha, I can hit those notes >;)

  • You listened to it.

    You can't un-listen to it.

  • His singing and acting are fairly poor. His head voice lacks in power and resonance (flute-like sound), and is too dissociated from his chest voice. His painfully affected acting, full of unnatural expressions and diction, reminds us he is only pretending — undermining the very purpose of acting. I get the impression that he is a spoiled child crying for his Hot Wheels miniature. No real feel of depression, anger, doubt; no distress at all. Only childish whining.

  • JUST A LITTLE!!!

  • I'm an atheist but even so I cannot helping crying all the times I see this video just because of Carter's performance. So touching the way he sings...and what a voice!!

  • Overacting - To act (a dramatic role) with unnecessary exaggeration.

  • i LOVE this ACter

  • Glenn is one of the most natural actor in Jesus role I've ever seen. I love this version sooo much, because during "Gethsemane" Jesus prays for the last time, desperately asking his heavenly father to "take this cup away". And his acting... just... wow! Most of commentators are speaking about his vocal skills. But what about acting? It's a part from musical, not just a song. Glenn made very very very good Jesus. I am proud of him.

  • To be honest, Ian Gillan's scream is better. I respect this actor his vocal skills, but, his screams are just, in a hursh way of saying, lame. Well, It's my opinion.

  • @Geokkonidae11

If you think it's the acting style we don't like about this rendition, you're missing the point.

  • For me Pal Feke's Gethsemane is THE BEST! ( He is a great hungarian artist. )

  • Eunuch!! Sorry...

  • just a little????? what's!!!!!!!!

  • There is no comparison to Ted Neeley. This guy seems too cartoonish and british to me.

  • this id great but i find the the original version stil the best ther is more energy in it more feeling

  • I do really like this version, but 2:42 to about 2:48 just sounds ridiculous. Suppose everyone makes mistakes. Great singer though

  • Ted Neeley - the best!!!!

  • I think that he is an amazing preformer, and an increadible singer. but i think his voice is a little too soft for the part. Still way better than lots of of people!

  • I am in love with this version, I can't go two days without watching it!!!!!!!!! Glenn has an amazing voice, so strong yet so beautiful! Sometimes I imagine GLenn right next to me, I am obsessed!!!!!!!!

  • @SuperGoldenchild12 "Rock me sexy Jesus" ;)

  • Glenn Carter is amazing, he makes does a very good impression of Jesus. I can't go a week without watching this movie. Glenn has a beautiful voice, and anyone who disagrees is insane. Sometimes I imagine him next to me, by my side and everything I own is covered in something involving Glenn Carter!!!!! I love him so!!!!!

  • @SuperGoldenchild12 Dude i love youu :L,, i am obsessed with glenn carter and i always say he is the best at portrayin jesus and people always argue with me,, glenn in amazing :)

  • Glenn carter is amazing, he hits those high notes so well, and he has such a beautiful voice, and he is totally hot!!!

  • this verison is good but i will alawys love the ted neeley version

  • yak

  • Mr Carters still my favorite Still gives me Chills

  • Why is he standing like he has to poop the entire song?

  • 5:54 gigoloface

  • There was a male pornstar from the 90's named Alex Sanders that looked very similar to this Jesus.

  • can we not argue which Jesus is the best?, I mean you can't expect them to all be the same, so why compare? I love different ways this role/and this song can be pulled off, this really ranks up there for me

  • would it be wrong for a girl to sing this song cause i really love it and i feel i could put alot of emotion into it and do it really well but im not sure if it would be right :/ plz some one respond

  • @AwsomeSinger2B

Wrong? Depends where the listener's beliefs stand. However, even for a non-believer, a woman singing this song would be beyond strange and nonconcordant. So, where normally I don't even care that a woman sings a song written for a man or vice-versa, this would be so strange that it would actually detract from the emotion of it. So I would advise against it.

  • @AwsomeSinger2B This song was sung perfectly by Ted Neeley in best and original 1973 film. His performance and the film will never be surpassed.

  • @Stheno490BC I'm not really sure what to say here, but I am shaking my head in disappointment.

  • @AwsomeSinger2B It wouldn't be wrong for a girl to sing this. I teach singing and had a girl do this for her singing exams. It sounded amazing. I'm sure you could do it some justice. Post vid on here if you can and we can see whether u did

  • @AwsomeSinger2B There wouldn't be anything wrong with singing it for personal satisfaction but it wouldn't make sense for an audition or a recital if that is what your asking.

  • I was initially afraid to watch this.

    And with good reason.

The singing- nasally, poor vowel shapes, breath support is weak. Can't hit the high notes at all, very squeaky. You could tell he struggled with it. No power, and at times just blasty. Diction was sloppy in places.

The acting? Overly-dramatic, goofy and awkward, the emotion unbelievable, nothing raw about it. No power. The vocal inflections were wrong. The staging was also poor, his movements weird.

    Neeley, where are you?

  • BORZALOM!!!

    Az egész előadás szörnyű!

    Szégyen az eredetire nézve...:(

  • That was incredibly powerful. It took some getting used to to see Jesus without the beard, but the acting in this song, and the delivery just blows me away. Bravo!

  • He always seems to me to be the goofy version of Jesus. Neely is the best Jesus ever.

  • the best performance ever !

  • neeley is the BEST

  • I'm sorry to say - but this is not the Jesus I imagine in this situation. At least not a Jesus who is preparing to die. He has some feminine feature that ruins the effect. Moreover, I miss the fear from his acting.

All in all, this was the least convincing version thus far. But, tastes differ...

  • he v'got a funny face

  • aha scouser :P Amazing voice as well :)

  • This is way overdone for my liking. Too much dramatics, not enough true emotion. Not to mention vocal impressiveness. I suppose John Farnham ruined me for any other Jesus, though.

  • Awsome Performance. Totally different from my favourite Ted Neeley, but wonderful.

  • he looks like mark seibert!

  • que buena cancion!!!!!

  • This is the best of ever JCS!

Hmmm - Nope! But Glenn is the best Lord!

    Love!

  • I wish people would stop comparing Glenn Carter to other Jesuses (Jesi?)! Every actor is unique and interprets the part entirely differently. I think he did an awesome job!

  • @Gekkonidae11 totalmente de acuerdo, no hay punto de comparacion jajajajaja

  • @Gekkonidae11 My Dad once said: "If you´ve done a great job, don´t try to make it even better!" Or with other words: When there is a version of something, that is great and magical, why then make one after another??? AND when i try to fit in the footsteps of someone, i have to except that i´ll be compared!! And Yes, it is a great Job Carter does or did, but I think Neeley´s more authentic... sry for my bad english...

  • @Gekkonidae11 it's Jesus' thats the proper vocab for it

  • Glenn's got nothing on Steve.. FACT.

  • @SimsVids15 Both are awesome!

  • He doesnt belt, he just sings like a girl, Steve is still Almighty, yes pun inteneded!

  • Glenn is better than Steve.

  • I am very happy that I be your friend thank you very much.

  • Almost as good as neeley.

  • He sings higher than most of the sopranos in my college choir class o_o

  • Glenn has a quite superior rendition of Jesus for two reasons. One is that he understands his role with a sensitivity that does him credit (since the point is to show Christ as a real man, with real feelings and a real burden, struggling under intense and dangerous scrutiny. Nobody actually understands him, just as he says, and he exasperatedly fears they never shall). The other is that the combined expressions of his body, face, and voice serve his unique and stunning interpretation well.

  • what have I said???

  • All the versions are great.. We can only discuss which is the best. I think it depends on what type of men we prefer...it makes a lot. Glenn is just amazing, thou I think that Ted sang it stronger, but Czech Jesus Kamil Strihavka could as well be compared..for his voice is just....stunning! Enjoy everybody!

  • @845aleirbag I watched this with an open mind... It's nice, and different that Ted's version. Ted Neeley did a more passionate, stronger, gut wrenching version, in my opinion.. The original cast of JCSS was so good... Hard act to beat...

  • i would love other musical lovers to tell me what they think of my version of Gethsemane from JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR. It is my absolute favourite musical and i heard webber is doing a concert tour of it and i'm desperate to get a role so if any of you have his email adress and you like this please pass on the link (I know thats a long shot haha).

  • Neeley set the benchmark for this role, it's not been met yet. I suspect when you've been doing the role for over three decades - you get good at it...

  • Sure, the top notes cant touch neeley or Balsamo, but this guy acts tremendously - so much light and shade! Ian Gillan for me though anyday :)

  • @witness124 yeah this song is so epic!

  • 2:43 aww that's cute... Just a little XD x

  • This is just plain good.

  • It's a crazy -.-"...

  • Glenn Carter is cool but he looks like a "holy" Robert Plant.

  • He's good. No Ted Neeley though. No one has ever, I repeat EVER, matched him for this song. And no one ever will.

  • @flynn19 Amen.

  • I agree...when I saw Steve wipe the snot and tears off his face, well, I lost it...yet, Steve doesn't have the passionate LOVE for his heavenly Father that Ted Neely did in the 1973 movie version...Steve was incredible...raw passion, yes, but not final resolution based on love for Father God, which I KNOW was present when Jesus gave up His will in the garden...

  • His expressions make me giggle.

I think Steve and Ted are the best, though I prefer Steve's voice. This guy just makes me laugh.

  • Neeley is still the best Jesus, easil. Balsamo is admittedly great, and this guy is...trying?

  • @arryarrfiddledeedee Glenn's acting is absolutely perfect ...

  • @Neuroneos i agree whole heartedly

  • you're not jesus. Ted Neeley is jesus. who the heck is this imposter?

  • The Original Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) blows this version out the water by far. This is the movie is crappy is every single way possible... i thought this was a joke at first...

  • Dude looks like Robert Plant...just looks, though. Neeley-Balsamo are god-sent.

  • no,jesus, brother, you didnt die in vain...its been 2000 years and we still remember you!

    BROTHER!!!

  • I've always loved this version, but I just looked up Steve Balsamo and I'm in awe of him. I see why people find it hard to appreciate this. I still think Glenn does a very good job, but Steve... wow.

  • @chrisistrangerthanu

the only one who makes a great jesus is ted neeley that steve dude is ok and this guy just sucks

  • @chrisistrangerthanu yeaah Steve is amazing wow but glenn does a very good job

  • @chrisistgreat rangerthanu Steve is a great actor. But if you want to here some KILLER vocals on Gethsemane (not terribly acting but awesome vocals lol), look up Drew Sarich's Gethsemane. It will blow your mind out of your skull (in a good way lol) ;-)

  • @chrisistrangerthanu Kamil Strihavka in the czech version = superstar

  • just the mere fact that he was cast as jesus and that he didn't explode while singing this song is an accomplishment in and of itself

  • no matter how it was before, but this performance IS NOT losing!!!

  • Ted nevim jestli je to lepší v angličtině nebo v češtině :D !!

  • I'm not very musically literate, but this doesn't even start to look like the original version.

  • Well, I just watched Steve Balsamo and have to agree that is the BEST Gethsemane I've seen. Still think Neely is the worst of the bunch.

  • Seriously all you Ted Neely lovers. Neely sounds like the guy that sings the songs in "The Hobit" or Kermit the Frog perhaps. This guy is amazing and his facial expressions are spot on. He makes me cry, I can feel his angst. He is superior to Neely by far!

  • Each performer brings him or herself individual self to a role. I think this man, Glenn Carter, gives a credible performance. And he is Jesus as HE feels it. Apples and Oranges is the way I see it. IMO this is filled with emotion and comes off as real. I like it very much.

  • @Ferney1c I agree with you about it being apples and oranges. I think it's impossible to say which performer is the best because it is all a matter of what the viewer is looking for from the character. You can only choose a personal favorite. This guy does a beautiful job! However, my favorite is Steve Balsamo just because the way he portrays the character is more of how I imagine Jesus to have been. But that's just a personal preference so I can't say he is the best, just my favortie :)

  • woah, all those emotions when he sing! lovely! ^^

  • Great, great... But still I prefer Neeley and Steve Balsamo... Neeley has the true rock attitude, and Balsamo the technical perfection...

  • Absolutely not bad, but I prefer Ted Neeley...

  • I like this because instead of showing Jesus' divinity it shows his humanity.

  • He's amazing, but I still prefer Ted.

  • TOUCHING...

  • Love it. Totally. The best. Maybe cause it was the first version I had seen. Watched the others but Glenn just gives the most emotional and powerful performance. Yes his voice may not be as strong as the others, but he makes it. I was blown away. Not an easy song to sing!

  • every time i hear this im almost in tears and i realize how much he sacifisced for us

  • hmmmm....nope, no goosebumps....HOWEVER, Steve Balsamo and Ted Neeley...ayayayayayayayyyyyy....not sure which one I prefer...but both are FANTASTIC!

  • 5:34-5:50

  • Can't everyone just agree that both the original JCS and This one are both fantasticly casted and moving as eachother as they are so different from eachother

  • I have only on e thing to say when it comes to this piece..Balsamo, Balsamo, Balsamo! OK that's 3 things. All you have to do is watch him and you know why he ALW's favourite Jesus. I appreciate Neeley also as I saw him in 1972 and again in 2009. Noting compares to Steve Balsamo's mastery of his voice as it it relates to this song.

  • @cakeman1955 Yes, Steve Balsamo is the best singer for JCS!! I saw him perform live on stage at a concert with Jon Lord in Munich, fantastic!!!

  • well....... hehehe i have to say, i laughed hard but he sings cool... but very funny sometimes

  • ahhaha, 2:43 , really little =)

  • this is sooooo niiice!!! Bzzzzt!! (Sound of buzzer telling him to stop)

  • prefer the original and the revised Australian (Rock Opera In The Round) 1992 recording, but this is still worthy. search for Australian Jesus Christ Superstar 1992 there's several video's

  • Although I consider Ted Neeley's performance the pinnacle of perfection in his role as Jesus, Glen's performance is no less moving in this production. The casting in this version was outstanding as in the original production.

  • personally i prefer the original movie... i believe that ted neley is better...

  • 2:43 just a little

  • @lovebagdah love that part!

  • @lovebagdah i love you

  • @lovebagdah i wanted to write this comment too :D funny

  • As if the apostles don't wake up.

  • @Nothingtearsthebeast BAHAHAHAHAHA

  • glenn carters facial expressions when hes talking about being inspired are ridiculously overdramatized but his voice is so beautiful and he definitely has emotion and passion. i love glenn carter.

  • na Střihavku to nemá...

  • This song...I want to cry everytime I listen it, in both of them, 97 and 2000's version.

    "Show me there's a reason for you wanting me to die. You're far to keen and where and how, but not so hot on why" This part is simply the best, my god ;___; and the end....the end! ;AAAAA;

  • top falsetto note too pretty, not powerful or emotional enough.
