I am an atheist, but this a very shallow understanding of Buddhism. Alan Watts has some excellent lectures on this. If you read some (Thich Nhat Hanh for example) , listen to, or get to know some contemporary Buddhists you'll see I think that this philosophy/religion certainly has adopted to changing times and circumstances; certainly much more so than Western religions or even the Hindu tradition.

I think what's meant by attachment, in this context, is simply not letting go of something or someone. I'm not sure if the root of suffering is attachment, but if you lose something and don't let go of it you would certainly suffer as a result. If you have something and you're attached to it, the possibility of losing it would cause you suffering, even if you didn't lose it. On the other hand I think part of love is letting go. As the saying goes, if you love something set it free.

-2nd Nobel Truth-"Attachment" is often translated as "Clinging". So, loving someone is not a cause of suffering; but clinging obsessively to that emotion can be a cause of suffering.
-3rd and 4th do seem redundant, but that hardly seems like something to get so angry about.

Another way to look at it is you invest a sense of self in a thing, then when it is perceived the thing is lost a part of you "dies" and suffering occurs. A bum may not seem to "own" things, yet most are still quite attached to things, ie food, money, and constantly don't have them. Thus, suffering. Man dude, you really are suffering. The first noble truth is not "Life is suffering". The first noble truth is "There is suffering." There is happiness, suffering, peacefulness etc in life. The fourth one is "In order to overcome suffering, one needs to follow the 8 noble path." What you read is not the "4 noble truth". It's the "4 twisted truth".

I'm not sure if the root of suffering is attachment, but if you lose something and don't let go of it you would certainly suffer as a result. If you have something and you're attached to it, the possibility of losing it would cause you suffering, even if you didn't lose it. On the other hand I think part of love is letting go. As the saying goes, if you love something set it free.

-2nd Nobel Truth-"Attachment" is often translated as "Clinging". So, loving someone is not a cause of suffering; but clinging obsessively to that emotion can be a cause of suffering.
-3rd and 4th do seem redundant, but that hardly seems like something to get so angry about.
-Right Effort doesn't mean "just discarding" bad thoughts- It means not CLINGING to them.

Suffering occurs due to having an attachment, then getting the sense that that object has been lost. Another way to look at it is you invest a sense of self in a thing, then when it is perceived the thing is lost a part of you "dies" and suffering occurs. A bum may not seem to "own" things, yet most are still quite attached to things, ie food, money, and constantly don't have them. Thus, suffering. Man dude, you really are suffering. What is that you want that you don't have?

@MrWrongevolution There was a priest that killed another priest too .Recently,priests raped,molested and killed members of their families and were rewarded a cover up by the top rank priests in Vatican .There has never been a war between Buddhism and any religion .

The first noble truth is not "Life is suffering". The first noble truth is "There is suffering." There is happiness, suffering, peacefulness etc in life. The fourth one is "In order to overcome suffering, one needs to follow the 8 noble path." What you read is not the "4 noble truth". It's the "4 twisted truth".

@MrWrongevolution Isnt the same with Christain documentations? The Bible said Jesus walked on water and talked to god and the most stupid thing is he returned from his death 3 days later. At least buddha died like everyone else and didnt claim himself to be son of god. Anyhow, those are just legends not necesarily the truth. I recommend watch the disney cartoon on youtube first to know the story about the buddha. It was made by americans and had nothing crazy like you said.

@MrWrongevolution Christian bibles were changed ,fixed,made up ,and rewritten many time too.Even today,there are still controvertial issues on how,where and if jesus was borned from a virgin-how is that possible ? Buddha didnt walk 7 steps nor acted in such a way that said or that 'I am a great person' .So all that you have said are just a liar .But I think by saying that you are a liar does not do any effect on you .That is you are as thick as thieves.

As for kids being the worst STD out there, I think you should have a chat with an AIDS patient and a parent and see for yourself which one is the happiest. Otherwise a good video.
