I don't think the original ending was really necessary because all it is is just Elliot giving another one of his soliloquies and I think the ending that ended up in the movie was much more dramatic
@sozialeisolation No offense but please leave me alone, I was only trying to see what other people thought, and I wasn't trying to manipulate anyone, I don't want to get into a fight with someone I don't even know on YouTube because that's not what I'm here for. I'm really sorry
7:22 - but THAT made that moment all the more tense. I mean, there really isn't any reason for the camera to 3-cut into Elliot's face in wide-eyed astonishment.
Besides, in the S.E. of E.T., with cut of the gun taken out, the more 'menacing' moment in Williams' score just disappears. Besides, it isn't like these men fired the guns.
weikko79...good point..Speilberg forgets cops use guns and draw their guns all the time when they feel threatened, as they did in the movie.. the cops didn't know what they were dealing with.. E.T. was an alien..and the kids broke the law to save E.T.,,,
i dont like that steve thinks the guns went too far, i think when i was a kid they played an important part in the whole fear of the adults and were like an addition to the keys he used to signify 'grownups'. taking them out for the re-edition absolutely sucked
@tomes55moon I totally agree... It really pissed me me off that he did that... now Im not "pro guns used on kids" but its the fact that im 20 now and i have been watching this film since i was 3... and it really just sticks out that he cut it out... and anyone who seen the Original VHS version... theyd remember that Elliotts mom showed that it is wrong anyway (she yelled at the cops... NO GUNS THEY"RE CHILDREN!) , so to me its annoying that he cut it so noticeably... when he didnt even have to
i agree with you too. the guns as you mentioned were another facet of having fear of adults. plus it looks stupid when Elliot is cringing in fear when the agents are only holding walkie talkies. spielberg should have left this film alone in all aspects except for the harrison ford scene. i like that deleted scene added back in. spielberg should have only added that and put the film back in theaters. although i want spielberg to convert it into a 3d film. i think that would be cool!
yeah i never thought about that, how eliot looks so scared at bloody walkie talkies! lol defo agree with the harrison scene too - that would have been awesome - wish he was in more spielberg films like de niro for scorsese
According to Steven, he just didn't feel comfortable having the cops wielding guns on kids. So, even if, properly speaking, cops should have guns, the idea of pointing those guns at KIDS, in a movie primarily for kids, just doesn't sit right.
well gee... when it comes to aliens... i'm quite fond of having a gun to blow Greedo's ass away in the bar... BEFORE he shoots at me! lol.
i don't want to shoot ET... not too much anyway... but I want to be able to defend myself if he uses his powers for evil. we live in a fallen world. bears don't sit in a house and make porridge. they eat goldie locks.
Fiction. Bears, in REAL LIFE, wouldn't eat porriage, so much as they'd eat the girl, but in the FICTIONAL world that was created, bears might eat porriage. In FICTION, a dragon might be a nice guy who'd help keep a boy and a gold, talking flute from a wild and wacky witch. Again....fiction.
When Harrison Ford opened the blinds, it reminded me of Mr Strickland in BTTF 2 looking out at the parking lot. lol

Or a desk marker that said Principal Jones or principal Solo. Jones .

now i agree with 2 things
1-that i know his plan was not to be a crochety old guy
2-that the guns being used as a threat to KIDS was a bad idea!
now if there was just like a gun in the scence no biggy but really getting ready to threaten kids with a gun i think its better left out!

in context to "Guns" used in movies like this....
Speilberg went from YOung and Daring director, to an old and conservative Producer, it's a normal part of the cycle of life....

What a stupid idea to remove the guns. Cops should have guns, shouldn't they?

What if they're hostile aliens (or kids, for that matter)?

.... that's just a dumb statement. we can't shoot aliens? you never lasted long in many space invaders video games did you?
;-)

NOPE, I'm not much for space invaders or other video games. Why do you want to shoot E.T.? What's with you and guns, anyway?
