Brian, the best way I know of to show a JW that 1874 was the original date that Christ was believed to have returned invisibly by the founder and second President along with all their followers is to start with Barbour who they acknowledge as a contemporary of Russell. Explain to them that Barbour was a second adventist who had split with the 7th Day Adventists of Ellen G. White because they taught the Jesus returned invisibly in 1844 but Barbour said no that he didn't and wouldn't until 1874.

Brian, I spent numerous weeks with an elder and showing him with the proclaimers book that the original believed date of Christ's invisible return was 1874 and that the date wasn't changed officially until the year after Rutherford's death. He was willing to read what I was showing him in the proclaimers book but still wouldn't believe it. He later brought over the video Out of Darkness, in it it said Charles believed that Christ returned invisibly in 1874 despite his split with Barbour.

The crux of the charge is with the term "false prophet" which isn't so much a false prophecy as it is a false witness. However... in cases where people try and identify when and where prophecies have been fulfilled these are not prophets nor false prophets per say(so its important to distinguish that).

@sunshineuk1965 At first glance you might think that. However if you crunch the numbers you will see that the LDS Church still gained 36,000 more than the JWs did. While Catholic Church gained 390,449 new members. Thats 340,000 more than the JWs gained in the US.

Their increase percentages seem small because they are already sizable in number of members. Even the WT only reported a %2.5 increase.

For example the LDS church was estimated at about 6 million in the US. If they had a %1.42, that means that approximately 85,200 new members joined the Mormon faith.

Here's what I don't understand, if Jesus mentioned that no one knows the end except the Father, then how could anyone (man) know or calculate when the end would happen.
