Wow do I ever love this song. Such memories. I miss the artistric integrity and beautiful introspective vibe of 90s music like this. I recommend "Sleeping Satellite" by Tasmin Archer if you like this song. It's a little more on that Natalie Merchant female singer/songwriter vibe but I get the same kind of chills listening to that as I do this.
I like their music because of their talent. I'm not religious. Their songs are inspirational on a level that doesn't hit you over the head with their views. I think all people can relate to their "message". I wasn't even aware they were a Christian band till well after I owned some of their discs.

i used to like these guys, then one day i was listening, and it said something about jesus, and i was like wtf? looked them up, and found out their a christian rock band......:S
so that really turned me off. why do they have to ruin themselves with singing about god?!
@14bj337 well i guess i don't really believe in god, so.... it's probs cause they always come to my house and try to recruit me. i think if they have to actively come to my house and try and suck me in it can't be much good. it's just like bitch please! someone probs wrote the bible 2 thousand years ago, wrote "this is a true story" on the cover, and it's just a joke that went too far
@imharrypotter11 There are a lot of militant Christians out there (I don't mean violent, I just mean intense and self-assured). They seem to be very present and very loud, which turns a lot of people off of Christianity. As for the song itself, I think it can be appreciated artistically outside of its Christian message (or maybe it can't; it all depends on the listener). If you like it, then you like it; if you don't, then you don't. Peace be with you (and steer clear of trolls!).
LMAO stfu... if you hate a band because of what they believe in then your just retarded... you don't see me going to john lennon's videos and saying "I heard John is an atheist and that really turned me off, why can't he just realize that God is real?" I expect you do the same and be open minded to others people beliefs.
@AndrewEpicWins no it's different through, it's like ughh they all came together to sing about god, and like it just feels like they are trying to trick me by secretly incorporating christian messages into their songs, like i didn't sign up for that! like i thought they were about the music, but it's like, no, they're trying to preach to me :S and also i don't think you can compare them to john lennon...he was obviously a lot better
I wasn't comparing them to john lennon... I was trying to make you get the message. Just because some lousy guy came to your door and started preaching about the Bible doesn't mean you have to take it out on all christians. The band isn't trying to secretly trick you with their christian messages.... it's a christian band after all...That's like going to a church and saying "They're secretly putting christian messages" well no duh it's a church.

@Melodyotakuchan21 They were late teens - very early 20's when this video was made. Dan cut his hair really short by the time the MTV version was made. Best scene in this video? Dan kneeling in the mud during the interlude, and scooping up that mud and rubbing it through his hair and on his face. The symbolism in this video is so powerful! I've been a fan of them and Third Day from the get-go, Met Jars twice, had a 15 minute conversation alone with Dan. He has such empathy and compassion.
Why is it that any song by a "religious" band on youtube is suddenly the battleground for the hateful bashing of other people's views? This is a beautiful song that can be enjoyed by anyone. Leave it at that.
@acapps2 such is the way of humanity. do you realize how many wars have been fought in the name of gods? religious coexistence is a great idea but impossible because all religions claim to be "the one" and all who don't follow them are going to some form of hell. so fighting alway goes hand in hand when religion comes into the equation.

I think braducsb2 is probably just trying to get some kind of intense reaction. Have you never felt like you're becoming one with the mud? Like it's becoming hard to distinguish yourself from all the problems and needs and situations around you? I'm pretty sure that's an important aspect of humanity that God saves us from. This song is about being saved. There's nothing "blasphemous" about it, it's a quintessential Christian experience, looking to God instead of ourselves for sustenance.
@ Braducsb2 Not exactly. You took the lyrics in the wrong way. He said (In the way I see it) slowly I've become one with mud because he is sinking ( in the mud) and asks God to lift him up and out when he says "Lift me up".
This is as entertaining as it was first nearly 10 years ago. what a song to respond to our faith in times of trouble. it's so hard to believe in anything by faith
I've become one with the mud? What does that mean? If they are Christian, shouldn't they become one with God? Are they comparing God to mud? I don't think they'd be so blasphemous to do that... ??? Strange song. This song really sucks and is blasphemous!!
@DarkDarthV I may have misinterpreted the mud part, but I took an MP3 of this song to the pastor at my church and he was so disgusted, he took the CD out of the tray and destroyed it. He confirmed that this song is definitely blasphemous and recommended that I no longer listen to it. He even said that I may be "damned to Hades" if I continue to listen to such "rubbish."
@braducsb2 - A few things may have gone wrong here: 1) your pastor simply doesn't like this kind of music and/or misinterpreted it; 2) Like DarkDarthV said, you're being "difficult" here; 3) You unknowingly took the wrong CD to your pastor.... If you're being serious here, I'd investigate the third possibility.
@view172 You're right - I accidentally took my Slayer CD to my pastor. I'll take the Jars of Clay one tomorrow, although he might be busy since it's Easter. Thanks for the tip!
@signupaccountforme if your gonna troll, say something original. its generic, recycled jokes like the one you just posted that causes disgrace upon the trolling community.
Never realized they're Christian Rock. I won't hold it against them; it's a good song. According to Wikipedia: "...success coming from airplay on contemporary
Christian music and alternative rock radio, two radio formats which
rarely interact with one another." lol no kidding!
Why does it matter so much to people what a song or a band is promoting? If you enjoy the music, then just listen in and enjoy it. If not, don't listen to it, and certainly don't denounce others for liking it.
What a blessing it was to see Jars of Clay up close and personal at the Rock and Worship Roadshow in El Paso, TX. There were about 20 of us that saw a person concert of just them. I still can't believe that they have been around for at least 17 yrs. Sssoo much beautiful music to worship our Lord Jesus Christ. Thank you God for giving Jars of Clay a talent of music to reach millions and to hear Your word. AMEN
I am not a christian but i love this song in a sense it goes beyond all religions. it sings the hope that god (the true god of men and religions) is there to guide you, hold you and lift you up once you know that all your effort to live is in vain..all this debate of christianity, islam, rockers whatever is a waste of time.
Alot of people consider DC Talk as the Nirvana of Christian music. But This band and this one song brought so many to christian music than anyother. Flood was played over the airwaves on so many rock stations and many who never knew of the modern christian music soon came to to know. Many came to God to be lifted up.....
Let us not judge lest we ourselves be judged by the same judgment...not our job as believers, best left to our Lord God. Pray for the salvation of unbelievers.
the first time i heard this song i though it was about drowning in a floor of worries or problems, then i found out it was by a christian band and kne the true meaning :D
ok I heard this song sunday on the positive/christian station, and I had to go to my radio on my computer until I heard the song again to see what it was. They played 2 seconds of it and I knew instantly that was the song and looked it up. But this is not the version that was played. It sounded like they were singing live, but I like this one too. But where is the new version at?
This is one of my favorite songs by a Christian band. It helps remind me that no matter what problems are happening in my life the Lord Jesus Christ will be there for me. With faith he can help me to overcome anything. Matthew 17:20 - "Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
@ridethehogie May God show His love upon you when you don't feel Loved. May God light your path when you can't see which way to go. God loves you so much that He gave His only Son so that if you only believe in Him you will not perish but have everlasting life. Please accept His hand and let Him raise you into His loving arms.
personal thoughts: there is a difference in a christian band and a band that plays christian music. All members of a band could easily be christian and not sing music of praise.
@Keldone85 exactly. people constantly fuss over certain bands like Creed or Switchfoot whether they're Christian band or not. Why does it matter? The band members may be Christians, and maybe their lyrics involve their faith. Besides, a band like Switchfoot doesn't like 2 be called that because the band wants 2 reach out 2 secular listeners who wonder why they believe in Christ. I don't like a lot of new Christian bands because they seem 2 only do worship and it leaves other listeners out.
@BlaydSong ay now dont forget norse on that list thar too lol :} only good sung by this band and well eney other religion based bands p.s ............................odin rocks
truly the problem with the world today is because of the diffrent religions,im this ur that ..problems that we cant overlook our differences too love one another..we have to hate on each other..got to just love what mankind has turned into..its very unkind.if everyone would just think before they acted could be a much better place to be in tnx joc..this tracks blessed..
You dont have to have any religion like christanity, buddist, islam, and anyother similar religion to be a good person. All you have to have is a heart full of love and good will towars your neighbors.Take care of one another and this world will be more then havean and no hell to live, peace on earth and good will towards me!
As crazy as it seems I myself love this song, for those non believers the song works either way cause your listening to it. so your right gamerzPro who cars if they're christian or not ;-)
@2wolf Thanks!!...will check em' out this weekend! I agree...a lot of Christian music, although great, can put a person to sleep & also turn off a lot of young people. I listen to DC Talk, like on the way to work when want to get awakened(both ways) & rev'ved up for the day! Is better than Starbucks, hehe.
Atheist here....love this song. JOC have been around forever and continue to make quality music. You just have to search for it. I always felt a little bad for this band. In the 90s the word got around they were a "Christian band" and I think mainstream stations shunned them. But many in the religious community will say they are not Christian enough, I assume because their music is more original lyrically than the majority of the cookie cutter Christian rock bands.
@felldownonce1 Yeah, those in the Christian communities that don't like JOC hate anything that isn't Bill Gaither or four-part harmony. Rock can glorify God, too and Christian rock bands can be just as good as mainstream bands. I agree. : )
Love this band...I remember buying this cd back in 2000 i think...lost it in a house fire recently...thank God for YouTube and Pandora!! love both sites for my listening pleasure!
this video had more artistic vision than their later flood video. You actually get a sense of emotional pain (aka a person is actually struggling to stay afloat in this video) instead of a stoic white washed version that leaves you with three inches of water on a set floor. This video also has a man actually putting the muck on himself and accepting the deplorable situation- which sets up the actual theme of salvation (aka something you can't do yourself). The light at the end- also a nice touch
jars of clay is a christian band..but they got popular on the radio..even on non christian stations....this song may or may not be referring to the Lord.....idk...what does it even matter?! maaaaaaaaaaan ppl these days!
What's a "Christian Band"? Is that a band with a Christian in the group?Wouldn't most bands be a Christian band then? Most bands have at least a member or two who say they're a christian, especially country bands. Most of them always say "God Bless" at the end of concert, right? At the end of "The Jack" Bon Scott says "Thank you, and God Bless", so he must be a Christian, But AC/DC isn't called Christian music. Why is this called Christian music?
@rainmanx63 a christian band is a band who sings about Christ and the love of God. this song is questionable but listen to more jars of clay. they're definatly christian
@rainmanx63 ACDC isn't a Christian band because they don't lift up Jesus Christ. And just because someone says "God Bless" doesn't mean they're Christian. Jars of Clay are a Christian Band because... They lift up Jesus Christ.
@SamFisher147 -- The Reason Why Many cant stand Christians is for the Fact, Only God should Judge Yet Most People that Claim to be Christian have the Problem of Judging and Pushing Down Others and not Lifting them Up, How can someone Lift Up Jesus if they are so Busy Pushing Down Others... Imagine How Many People get Turned Off to God because Others, Judge and Set the Rules... Freewill has a Purpose, I'm Thankful for Anyone that says God Bless, Christian or Not...
@Sh0rtyT0kes "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" Christians have problems with Judging others. As does everyone else. Christians deal with problems like everyone else. The world we live in is very Judgemental. Christians shouldn't Judge others. We are called to be servants. To help the ones in need and to spread the word that Jesus Is Real, He's Alive! I agree on the "God Bless" part. I'm just saying, saying God bless doesn't make you a Christian. But it's still good to say.
@SamFisher147 yes most Christians aren't Christians because if they were they would judge there is only a few very few real ones out there... they think judging and going to church every Sunday is being holy but that's not Christianity
@blank3412 God is the only one who may judge whether they are Christian or not. It is not, nor has it ever been up to mankind to decide who is and who is not of the flock.
@SamFisher147 LOL.. DUH :) Your answer cracked me up like someone really needed to be told that AC/DC isn't a CHristian band!!! lol made my night!!!! lol lol and a big AMEN!
Of all the things I thought I might see in the comments of a favorite childhood song, I did not think I'd see a debate over their religious affiliation. What exactly /are/ you people talking about?? Is it that significant that you'd lose the message simply because of your judgments to the messenger?
Are they "not Christian" just because of the lead singer's having long hair? Hmph. Take a look at any traditional iconography of Jesus of Nazareth and you'll know otherwise. Just a thought....
Jesus is LORD!!

This song really sucks and is blasphemous!!
braducsb2 9 months ago
@braducsb2 They're not calling God mud, and I have a feeling you know that and are just being difficult on purpose.
DarkDarthV 9 months ago
@DarkDarthV I may have misinterpreted the mud part, but I took an MP3 of this song to the pastor at my church and he was so disgusted, he took the CD out of the tray and destroyed it. He confirmed that this song is definitely blasphemous and recommended that I no longer listen to it. He even said that I may be "damned to Hades" if I continue to listen to such "rubbish."
braducsb2 9 months ago
@braducsb2 - A few things may have gone wrong here: 1) your pastor simply doesn't like this kind of music and/or misinterpreted it; 2) Like DarkDarthV said, you're being "difficult" here; 3) You unknowingly took the wrong CD to your pastor.... If you're being serious here, I'd investigate the third possibility.

@view172 You're right - I accidentally took my Slayer CD to my pastor. I'll take the Jars of Clay one tomorrow, although he might be busy since it's Easter. Thanks for the tip!

Many came to God to be lifted up.....

ok I heard this song sunday on the positive/christian station, and I had to go to my radio on my computer until I heard the song again to see what it was. They played 2 seconds of it and I knew instantly that was the song and looked it up. But this is not the version that was played. It sounded like they were singing live, but I like this one too. But where is the new version at?
nicegyrl1 1 year ago
This is one of my favorite songs by a Christian band. It helps remind me that no matter what problems are happening in my life the Lord Jesus Christ will be there for me. With faith he can help me to overcome anything. Matthew 17:20 - "Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

personal thoughts: there is a difference in a christian band and a band that plays christian music. All members of a band could easily be christian and not sing music of praise.
Keldone85 1 year ago
@Keldone85 exactly. people constantly fuss over certain bands like Creed or Switchfoot whether they're Christian band or not. Why does it matter? The band members may be Christians, and maybe their lyrics involve their faith. Besides, a band like Switchfoot doesn't like 2 be called that because the band wants 2 reach out 2 secular listeners who wonder why they believe in Christ. I don't like a lot of new Christian bands because they seem 2 only do worship and it leaves other listeners out.

Is Christians who acknowledge Jesus with their lips
Then walk out the door and deny him by their lifestyle.
That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable."

Whatever. Good band.
felldownonce1 1 year ago
@felldownonce1 Yeah, those in the Christian communities that don't like JOC hate anything that isn't Bill Gaither or four-part harmony. Rock can glorify God, too and Christian rock bands can be just as good as mainstream bands. I agree. : )

this video had more artistic vision than their later flood video.

Why is this called Christian music?
rainmanx63 1 year ago
@rainmanx63 a christian band is a band who sings about Christ and the love of God. this song is questionable but listen to more jars of clay. they're definatly christian
DANjtheman 1 year ago 2
@rainmanx63 ACDC isn't a Christian band because they don't lift up Jesus Christ. And just because someone says "God Bless" doesn't mean they're Christian. Jars of Clay are a Christian Band because... They lift up Jesus Christ.
SamFisher147 1 year ago 90
@SamFisher147 -- The Reason Why Many cant stand Christians is for the Fact, Only God should Judge Yet Most People that Claim to be Christian have the Problem of Judging and Pushing Down Others and not Lifting them Up, How can someone Lift Up Jesus if they are so Busy Pushing Down Others... Imagine How Many People get Turned Off to God because Others, Judge and Set the Rules... Freewill has a Purpose, I'm Thankful for Anyone that says God Bless, Christian or Not...
Sh0rtyT0kes 11 months ago
@Sh0rtyT0kes "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" Christians have problems with Judging others. As does everyone else. Christians deal with problems like everyone else. The world we live in is very Judgemental. Christians shouldn't Judge others. We are called to be servants. To help the ones in need and to spread the word that Jesus Is Real, He's Alive! I agree on the "God Bless" part. I'm just saying, saying God bless doesn't make you a Christian. But it's still good to say.

Ciao!
Your words bring passages within two of the "Synoptic Gospels" to mind!
Mathew 7:3 "Why do you look at the splinter that is in your brothers' eye, and not notice the beam which is
in your own eye?
Luke 6:41 "Why do you notice the speck of sawdust in your brothers eye and pay no attention to the plank in
your own?"
Would we not all do well to take these passages to heart, when dealing with those, with whom we might disagree?
Blaine
blainebill39 11 months ago 2
@SamFisher147 yes most Christians aren't Christians because if they were they would judge there is only a few very few real ones out there... they think judging and going to church every Sunday is being holy but that's not Christianity
