As a little kid of 5, i used to listen to the very exciting 'DICK BARTON--SPECIAL AGENT' from about 1946-to 1950, when they anounced it would be replaced by a new serial called --'THE ARCHERS' (an every-day story of country folk). I remember it so clearly because of the shock of loosing my hero's--DICK, JOCK ,& SNOWY. I said--I hope it won't last, and then my hero's will come back---still waiting---pass the tissues someone.
I loved the episode of Porridge with Ronnie Barker where Fletch is called to the cell of the chief bigwig con (top dog as they're sometimes called) called Groutie. As Fletch enters Groutie's cell, he motions for him to keep quiet as he sits there at his table wearing a big pair of headphones. After a minute or so he takes them off and you can hear the theme from The Archers being played. So funny but shows what an instantaneously recognisable tune it is. :)
brings back lots of memories-Doris and Dan were almost like real people in my young mind- it was broadcast every day in new Zealand for many years at 4pm. Then in the 80s they cut it back to a weekly omnibus episode at about 8pm mid week- then eventually it disappeared- which is a real pity as it is just as good as stuff like Emmerdale and Eastenders and Coro etc on TV.
brings back happy memories, back to 1959, when the tune my grandfather and i would dance to it in front of the coal fire, Then he would sit down with his pipe and listen to the story I seem to remember an old man called Gabrielle in it he had a strange voice, Happy days
This isn't the version they currently use. Anybody got a full-length version of that? I never seem to catch the episodes or omnibuses where it isn't faded out halfway.
I really do not care what anyone says, but as far as I am concerned this is both the best programme and the best theme tune to ever be broadcast by the BBC, from England, from the United Kingdom or anywhere in the world. As was once said, Radio 4 without The Archers is as unthinkable as the BBC without Radio 4! God bless Ambridge and here's to the next 60 years! (and beat that Corrie!)
@mebiggles1 The worst to come if we had those lyrics for our national anthem. Though I would like this as our national anthem but not those lyrics thanks!
My favourite episode was the one in which the p;ros and cons of various types of manure were discussed. There was a lively controversy in Ambridge, and the older farmers were not about to concede to the young'uns about points relating to stench, attraction to insect pests, wandering old dogs, etc. Lord Home said it was the most fascinating study of the subject he had ever come across.
i'm listening to this because the stig is listening to this

First dislike, for the most irritating noise to be broadcast over the airways (other than dubstep!)

@boffinme80 It's annoying to non-english British people.

@miscellaneousness It's understandable but chill. Calling someone a dumbass for a small mistake is a bit juvenile.
