Half a length in front of Foolish Pleasure, know why? Because Foolish Pleasure does not match up in quality when put up against Ruffian. Ruffian would have won that race if she hadn't of broken down...also in the clip, it shows Foolish Pleasure slowing down...that horse did not slow down. Him and his stupid jockey kept going
@DBJKAJ hay moron! why don't you read up on your race facts a little. You cannot compare Ruffian's race records to that mule's. Foolish Pleasure struck it lucky when Ruffian broke down.
@Asiya40 it doesnt show a lack of respect at all , it happened, it was an accident she is remembered for her greatness and tragic end so both should be shared
Ruffian was always in front, she was in front in all of her races when she broke out of the gate, they should have said foolish pleasure had won,she was in front when she broke down, she was the true winner
Poor Ruffian... if she didnt breakdown, she would have won that by a lot! she was a 1/2 length in front when she died, there is even a statue somewhere of like a second or two before the tradgity struck her <3 luv ya girl... let u be forever in our hearts...
I was at monmouth park today, and a horse broke down after coming in second. we turned away to go cash our bets, looked back, and the poor thing was on the dirt...
Eight Belles was another tragic filly that broke both her ankles right after running the race of her short life in the Kentucky Derby, 2008. She gave winner Big Brown all he could handle down the stretch and collapsed after finishing second...they put her down right there at the ambulance on the track.
It was just an opinion, and I do know the game, maybe not the betting, but I still know the game.
And anyways, you don't have to flare up at me, I was just stating my opinion, I only first found out about Ruffian about November in 2010. I wasn't even born yet when she was put to sleep, so I know pretty much nothing about her.
That must of been really painful for Ruffian and a painful sight to see for the owners who had to see her getting put down. I hate it when animals get hurt and they have to be put down. It is the baddest part in a animals life, to have to get put down if they have too.
@TheGreatandLovable It was not the birds. She was a trained professional and had run all the time with birds on the track. If you look really close, she took a bad step even before the birds had started flying. What caused the breakdown (according to her trainer) was the way she came out of the gate, hitting her shoulder and either injuring her right fore, or injuring her left fore and making her put more weight on the right. Either way, it wasn't the birds.
@TheGreatandLovable she didnt technically win that race... by any stretch of the imagination. she broke down. thats like saying barbaro won the preakness. horses train with birds flying all over the place. it definitely wasnt the birds. learn the game before you comment like that.
@TheGreatandLovable i actually know, she was finished before she took 5 strides from the gate, she smashed her left shoulder at the start, and that meant, the weight of her entire body was forced on her right leg, and ruffians hoofs were out of proportion to the rest of her body, her body was huge bit her feet were only size 5, 1100 pounds of pressure on that tiny hoof, her tiny ankle, she already did an injury to it, it would have hurt like hell, but she kept running until it finally gave in
@xhollieluvsIzzyx she was actually ahead by a neck when she broke down, so I think she definitely won even if she didn't "technically". She was a truly great horse, beautiful, and now she can run free in heaven :')
Ruffian by FAR beats out any other Filly if you ask me even Zenyatta i wasnt even born yet when she brokedown but she is still the best philly that has ever run in my opinion
poor girl, she didn't deserve that. :( no horse deserves that, but she was at least doing something that she enjoyed with the wind in her face, land stretched out before her, and the Earth pounding beneath her hooves.
Ruffian deserved to live longer than she did. She is loved & missed dearly, & will never be forgotten. To anyone who calls a bad name upon Ruffian, you deserve a swift kick to the rear. There was no other like this great racing filly. She left in her passing a memory; a vision of surpassing grace & beauty of a soaring poetry in motion written in hoofbeats, that ring as clearly today as they did then. Ruffian, you are never to be forgotten. May your soul forever race the clouds. R.I.P, sweetheart
As a filly lover. My rating is as follows. Ruffian is the best of all-time. Zenyatta, a modern winner with personality in spades ranks no.2 all-time behind only Ruffian. Now for the rest. Fillies have won the Derby ie. Winning Colors and the other triple crown races, just like RA. Rags to Riches win over Curlin in the Belmont another. Personal Ensign, Go for Wand,Genuine Risk, Dark Mirage, etc. all greats in a sport ruled by the boys. RA deserves a spot in this group, top 10 on my list so far.
By the way, I love RA. No one was cheering harder than me for her to take the Preakness. She has been impressive, her Oaks win was a jaw dropper in a record time with no competition. Of all since she reminds me the most of Ruffian, by her style of racing. If she continues to run and win, her all-time stock will only rise. A rise into the top 3? One thing for sure, this will have to include a race against Zenyatta, who IMO is the best since Ruffian and perhaps the best closer ever to run.

She would have kicked his butt had she not broken down...as always she was in the lead. Fillies and mares give you twice as much as stallions and geldings - she is my favorite horse of all time; well besides my own <3

I too am talking about Seabiscuit, but I am the CORRECT one. You would know that if you knew what you were talking about. Seabiscuit did NOT break a leg nor did he die of old age. He was 14...LOOK IT UP
It's impossible talking to juveniles such as you, for one you are ignorant and two you are stubborn. Seabiscuit never broke his leg. Red Pollard did, but Seabiscuit ruptured a ligament. I have the book in my hands right now, and NO broken leg is mentioned. I also have his documentary which talks about his RUPTURED LIGAMENT. Sorry, but you are wrong. Look it up and you will see. It's not that hard.
well aren't you a great person....ok even if your right why r u so rude for??? if u want people to listen to u u should be nicer to people k. goosh stop being rude and if your right politly say no im sorry but i have a different idea. sorry i was wrong k. im not being rude and u should stop to. anyways people who love horses shouldn't fight :) k
to falloutatthedisco: she was racing against foolish pleasure, the race was called "the battle of the sexes" (ruff ruff the filly and foolish pleasure the colt, at the preakness, in that race she broke her forelock, she kept running determined to stay in the lead, then after 3 hours of surgery, they finally decieded to euthenize her, ( i read all about it ) REST IN PEACE RUFFIAN!!!!
OH that wat it;s called! a fetlock i thought it was called a forelog XD i knew that! the preakness i must be thinking of another horse...sheesh im retarded XD XD XD
......someone already corrected her and the forelock isnt anywere near the leg it is the hair that comes from in between the horses ears, off the poll, up near the mane
race horses are bred for speed and sppeed only, many horses have a problem because of inbreeeding or gentics that when they ran in race there lungs begin to bleed and come out their nose it is truely sad
Yes I DO SO DONT SPEAK TO ME LIKE THAT! UR AN ADULT, GET SOME MANNERS! I HAVE 5 THANKS VERY MUCH, I WAS RIDING MY SHETLAND AT LIKE 18 MONTHS OLD! I KNOW IM NOT A HORSEYDUMBASS! IF U HAVENT NOTICED, I SAID O POOR GIRL! AGONY! WHATS BAD BOUT THAT? SHE MUST HAVE BEEN IN AGONY! AND DONT BE SO SARCASTIC! IM SIMPATHISING, I MAY BE BRITISH BUT I CARE ABOUT UR AMERICAN HORSE SO SHUT UP AND DONT HAVE A GO AT ME FOR BEING NICE! AND YES, DO REPLY!
i never saw her race but what i do know is that she would run each and every race with all her might becuase she knew what she had to do on this earth. and racing with a true heart is better then racing with the whip.
ILY RUFFIAN REST IN PEACE BECUASE NOW IN HEAVEN YOU CAN RUN TO YOUR HEARTS CONTENT
I followed her career from the start. The day of the race there was so much excitement. I left work early to watch. To this day, I can't watch this or even speak about her for more then three sentences without breaking down myself. It's been a very long time, but she lives on in her fans hearts forever. She was a beautiful filly and very loved.
I may not have been alive to have seen her race, but I know that she didnt run because of a whip in the jockey's hand, she ran because she loved it. She lives on in those who love her. She will be forever in our hearts
hey can someone do me a favor! Please!!! Could some one make a video of Ruffian just running the race *match* and breaking her leg and that is it. I know this sounds weird but she is the only black race horse that had that happen. And I need it for my story. Thank you I would love you for it!!!!:) It can be any song really:) but I would like Naruto "Distance" thank you!
dude this is the video of when she brock done this is the really thing! not the movie i can tell the difference ivw seen the movie and ya this is her really break down!
Ruffian, the greatest racing filly of all time. What i would give to meet her once. To one comment earlier about Barbaro, he had to have surgury, he had laminitis they needed to help him. It was inhumane to let him go on with no help.
I have PROOF Ruffian won that race, and it's right there in this video. She broke down in the lead, and then the announcer said the race was over. So, she did win the race.
Through the first 60 years of the 20th century, most of the major stallions and many of the best mares were owned and controlled by some of the oldest families and richest sporting patrons in America, the Whitneys, Woodwards,Bradleys,Wideners,Klebergs & Mellons. They wanted to "improve the breed," which meant to breed a horse with great speed, stamina and SOUNDNESS.
As these families died out and their blue-chip breeding stock was sold, the best fell into the hands of commercial breeders.
Native Dancer had gotten so sore due to a chronic inflammation in his ankles he had developed osselets, bony growths along his ankle joints. Native Dancer appeared 4x in Eight Belles' pedigree.
2008 Kentucky Derby, all the horses carried the blood of Native Dancer.
Big Brown's sire, Boundary, by Danzig, a son of Northern Dancer was known for his bad knees; Brown's dam, Mien, is by Nureyev, another son of Northern Dancer.
But he has the sound blood of other lines, like Round Table and Damascus.
So yes AllisonSprint they have bred the legs out from under the Thoroughbreds. Ruffian's soft-boned sire, Reviewer, had broken a leg three times while in training as a racehorse, and had to be destroyed after breaking down a fourth time in a paddock accident while serving at stud.Ruffian's dam, Shenanigans, was a daughter of Native Dancer.
This is so sad it seems most of the horse that could win the triple crown break down if you look it seems when she takes her stride in the right front her hoof bends like she landed on the tip of the hoof & fell on it
If I may say, Allison has a point. The brittle bone structure came from horses like Native Dancer and Northern Dancer. Northern Dancer has a massive blood line, good comformations and looks, and freak speed. Basically, the final product is a gorgeous horse with tremendous speed and skimpy little bones that can't withstand the horse's own pressure. Ruffian in particular had the most brittle bone lines on both sides of her family tree....
Theres no relation in the pattern, there all seperate injurys. Horses are just being inbred over and over again, and it could seem theres a relation but theres not.
If Barbaro hadn't had so much surgery, it's possible he could have been saved. They kept removing tissue from his ankle so it would bend more, even though he could walk with how it was. I don't understand how Ruffian and so many other great horse's accidents were pushed by Barbaro's though.
Ah, gotcha! :) And yes (to AllisonSprint), there's a common pattern -- thoroughbreds aren't being bred for durability anymore, but are instead bred for sped, which includes a lot of bloodlines with a propensity for throwing weak ankles. Also, horses are raced a good few years before their bones are ever fully set, which leads to a lot of strain and various injuries.
That's what I was thinking. I mean if some of these horses are being bred simply for more money(some do bred for the love of the horses) then you think that they'd breed a mure durable horse. If some hanoverian(very agile) and akhal-teke or turkoman(very durable)blood was introduced, they could build strength and still be very fast.
They could, but they'd probably just say 'but they're bred from Arabians anyway' and then dismiss it at that. Sadly, we'll just see more breakdowns. I'm not against racing at all, I just wish to see breeders taking care to check pedigrees and not get multiple instances of studs that have weak legs/ankles in the mating.
Why dont the breeders breed them from a long blod line of a diffrent breed that has strong bone so that it will last thru out there blood stream and pass it on
Well samsam29, it wasn't any bone, and any human or small animal's bone could be fixed, but this was a horses bone, and can't exactly, easily be fixed. You wouldn't understand. This wasn't just any bone THIS was Ruffian's bone. They couldn't help her injury!
You don't make any sense. What can't I understand? And what does the bone pertaining to Ruffian have anything to do with my comments? Let's see, I said jokingly that no racehorse would weight a ton and if they do they should be put on a diet. I said that any bone can break. Now neither of these two comments are saying anything at all against Ruffian, so what IS the point you are trying to make, that I can only post mourning comments on this video? Yes, it was a tragic loss, we all know it!
Yeah but thats a cat, lol. A horse weighs so much more than that, its not easy to do anything. a horse probaly couldnt walk with only three legs, lol. When a horse breaks there leg, there is not much chance it will survive, im afraid :'( one of the ponies i knew had to be put down, he was lame and mesing about and he broke his leg :(
A horse has a different anatomy than a cat - it couldn't survive having lost one leg because the remaining three wouldn't be able to support the horse's weight. Even if they are able to repair the leg, there is a high chance of the other legs developing laminitis or other infections while the horse recovers, which is exactly what happened to Barbaro. It's a shame, but these horses are bred for speed, not soundness, and the number of accidents will increase as they continue to get faster.

Technically, she actually won that race, but when she broke down, she fell behind...
I think it was the birds on the tack that made her get hurt.
They probably scarred her, and made her put too much pressure on her leg...
They took off right when she broke down......

soccer6horses3 2 years ago
It's impossible talking to juveniles such as you, for one you are ignorant and two you are stubborn. Seabiscuit never broke his leg. Red Pollard did, but Seabiscuit ruptured a ligament. I have the book in my hands right now, and NO broken leg is mentioned. I also have his documentary which talks about his RUPTURED LIGAMENT. Sorry, but you are wrong. Look it up and you will see. It's not that hard.

do you mind me asking how she died?
Fall0utAtTheDisco 3 years ago
to falloutatthedisco: she was racing against foolish pleasure, the race was called "the battle of the sexes" (ruff ruff the filly and foolish pleasure the colt, at the preakness, in that race she broke her forelock, she kept running determined to stay in the lead, then after 3 hours of surgery, they finally decieded to euthenize her, ( i read all about it ) REST IN PEACE RUFFIAN!!!!
PaintandPinto 3 years ago
did you read the book about her?
polishhorserider 3 years ago
lol
It was not at the Preakness. It was a match race-"the Great Match race"-made just for them and held at Belmont Park.
And she broke her fetlock, not forelock. Forelock is just hair.
Ruffian4Ever 3 years ago
OH that wat it;s called! a fetlock i thought it was called a forelog XD i knew that! the preakness i must be thinking of another horse...sheesh im retarded XD XD XD
PaintandPinto 3 years ago
uh well there is one problem with your comment
its the fetlock not the forelock the forelock is the hair in between the horses legs
TechnoWolves 3 years ago
......someone already corrected her and the forelock isnt anywere near the leg it is the hair that comes from in between the horses ears, off the poll, up near the mane

race horses are bred for speed and sppeed only, many horses have a problem because of inbreeeding or gentics that when they ran in race there lungs begin to bleed and come out their nose it is truely sad

i miss her so so much
i never saw her race but what i do know is that she would run each and every race with all her might becuase she knew what she had to do on this earth. and racing with a true heart is better then racing with the whip.

She was a beautiful filly and very loved.

shit did she die how?
milliesos 3 years ago
I may not have been alive to have seen her race, but I know that she didnt run because of a whip in the jockey's hand, she ran because she loved it. She lives on in those who love her. She will be forever in our hearts

hey can someone do me a favor! Please!!! Could some one make a video of Ruffian just running the race *match* and breaking her leg and that is it. I know this sounds weird but she is the only black race horse that had that happen. And I need it for my story. Thank you I would love you for it!!!!:) It can be any song really:) but I would like Naruto "Distance" thank you!
AkatsukiLovers 3 years ago
dude this is the video of when she brock done this is the really thing! not the movie i can tell the difference ivw seen the movie and ya this is her really break down!
barbaroluver1996 3 years ago
Ruffian, the greatest racing filly of all time. What i would give to meet her once. To one comment earlier about Barbaro, he had to have surgury, he had laminitis they needed to help him. It was inhumane to let him go on with no help.
dreamsofloobie 3 years ago
RIP Ruffian
horsejumper958 3 years ago
I have PROOF Ruffian won that race, and it's right there in this video. She broke down in the lead, and then the announcer said the race was over. So, she did win the race.
HeartagramMagesty 3 years ago
Through the first 60 years of the 20th century, most of the major stallions and many of the best mares were owned and controlled by some of the oldest families and richest sporting patrons in America, the Whitneys, Woodwards,Bradleys,Wideners,Klebergs & Mellons. They wanted to "improve the breed," which meant to breed a horse with great speed, stamina and SOUNDNESS.
As these families died out and their blue-chip breeding stock was sold, the best fell into the hands of commercial breeders.
xvmiragevx 3 years ago
Native Dancer had gotten so sore due to a chronic inflammation in his ankles he had developed osselets, bony growths along his ankle joints. Native Dancer appeared 4x in Eight Belles' pedigree.
2008 Kentucky Derby, all the horses carried the blood of Native Dancer.
Big Brown's sire, Boundary, by Danzig, a son of Northern Dancer was known for his bad knees; Brown's dam, Mien, is by Nureyev, another son of Northern Dancer.
But he has the sound blood of other lines, like Round Table and Damascus.
xvmiragevx 3 years ago
So yes AllisonSprint they have bred the legs out from under the Thoroughbreds. Ruffian's soft-boned sire, Reviewer, had broken a leg three times while in training as a racehorse, and had to be destroyed after breaking down a fourth time in a paddock accident while serving at stud.Ruffian's dam, Shenanigans, was a daughter of Native Dancer.
xvmiragevx 3 years ago
This is so sad it seems most of the horse that could win the triple crown break down if you look it seems when she takes her stride in the right front her hoof bends like she landed on the tip of the hoof & fell on it
nff4lfe 3 years ago
If I may say, Allison has a point. The brittle bone structure came from horses like Native Dancer and Northern Dancer. Northern Dancer has a massive blood line, good comformations and looks, and freak speed. Basically, the final product is a gorgeous horse with tremendous speed and skimpy little bones that can't withstand the horse's own pressure. Ruffian in particular had the most brittle bone lines on both sides of her family tree....
ridingxruffian 3 years ago
Ruffian, Barbaro, George Washington and Eight Belles are all related and had very similar fractures, am i the only one that sees a pattern here?
AllisonSprint 3 years ago
Barbaro broke his right rear leg in many places. Eight Belles broke both her FRONT ankles. How is that similar?
FireGirlG 3 years ago
Theres no relation in the pattern, there all seperate injurys. Horses are just being inbred over and over again, and it could seem theres a relation but theres not.
grkplayer6 3 years ago
I think you are the only one, yes.
scenceable 3 years ago
wow.. its funny how almost the same thing just happened to 8 belles...
ShannonNicoleCORP 3 years ago
Its not funny-if you didnt mean it that way, you worded it really dumb.
Ruffian4Ever 3 years ago
Not quite. She had an injury that was more similar to Barbaro's injury, except in both ankles.
heatherjl 3 years ago
If Barbaro hadn't had so much surgery, it's possible he could have been saved. They kept removing tissue from his ankle so it would bend more, even though he could walk with how it was. I don't understand how Ruffian and so many other great horse's accidents were pushed by Barbaro's though.
glaceauu 3 years ago
I just said the breaks that she had were more similar to the one that Barbaro sustained during his last race, nothing more.
heatherjl 3 years ago
I wasn't posting it to your comment. Just simply stating a comment. If I clicked 'Reply' I didn't mean to.
glaceauu 3 years ago
Ah, gotcha! :) And yes (to AllisonSprint), there's a common pattern -- thoroughbreds aren't being bred for durability anymore, but are instead bred for sped, which includes a lot of bloodlines with a propensity for throwing weak ankles. Also, horses are raced a good few years before their bones are ever fully set, which leads to a lot of strain and various injuries.
heatherjl 3 years ago
That's what I was thinking. I mean if some of these horses are being bred simply for more money(some do bred for the love of the horses) then you think that they'd breed a mure durable horse. If some hanoverian(very agile) and akhal-teke or turkoman(very durable)blood was introduced, they could build strength and still be very fast.
glaceauu 3 years ago
They could, but they'd probably just say 'but they're bred from Arabians anyway' and then dismiss it at that. Sadly, we'll just see more breakdowns. I'm not against racing at all, I just wish to see breeders taking care to check pedigrees and not get multiple instances of studs that have weak legs/ankles in the mating.

she was a beautiful horse. even this short video makes me cry.
moondancer4life 3 years ago
Ruffian was well proportioned....except for her feet. She was a very large beauty, but her shoe size was only a 5.
Nickomas88 3 years ago
They knew she had leg problems. She ran a 6 furlong race in 1:08 flat, under a tight hold. Wonder what it would have been if they had let her run.
fairplay1951 4 years ago
So teribble, poor beauty..

Popstarlive2005 4 years ago
Its such a shame, horse racing. Ruffian was only 3 when she was put to sleep. And these horses have such brittle bones, its not even funny.
WickedInnocence92192 4 years ago
Why dont the breeders breed them from a long blod line of a diffrent breed that has strong bone so that it will last thru out there blood stream and pass it on
oakstorm 4 years ago
Because an adamantium skeleton only exists in X-Men, not in real life. Any bone can break, for God's sake!
samsam29 3 years ago
Well samsam29, it wasn't any bone, and any human or small animal's bone could be fixed, but this was a horses bone, and can't exactly, easily be fixed. You wouldn't understand. This wasn't just any bone THIS was Ruffian's bone. They couldn't help her injury!
RidingWithRuffian 3 years ago
You don't make any sense. What can't I understand? And what does the bone pertaining to Ruffian have anything to do with my comments? Let's see, I said jokingly that no racehorse would weight a ton and if they do they should be put on a diet. I said that any bone can break. Now neither of these two comments are saying anything at all against Ruffian, so what IS the point you are trying to make, that I can only post mourning comments on this video? Yes, it was a tragic loss, we all know it!
samsam29 3 years ago
Whatever. I meant that a horses bone isn't easily fixed. We'll just drop it ;)
RidingWithRuffian 3 years ago
She didn't just break one leg.
They did surgery and she thought she was still racing and broke her other leg 2. They couldn't do moe surgery on her...
LittleCloudSc 4 years ago
Poor lil horsey. Still putting it down for a broken leg? Seems a lil harsh...
My friend's cat had to have her leg amputated and she copes just fine.
YuccaPucca 4 years ago
Yeah but thats a cat, lol. A horse weighs so much more than that, its not easy to do anything. a horse probaly couldnt walk with only three legs, lol. When a horse breaks there leg, there is not much chance it will survive, im afraid :'( one of the ponies i knew had to be put down, he was lame and mesing about and he broke his leg :(
withamvillarider 4 years ago
A horse has a different anatomy than a cat - it couldn't survive having lost one leg because the remaining three wouldn't be able to support the horse's weight. Even if they are able to repair the leg, there is a high chance of the other legs developing laminitis or other infections while the horse recovers, which is exactly what happened to Barbaro. It's a shame, but these horses are bred for speed, not soundness, and the number of accidents will increase as they continue to get faster.
heartnaspade 4 years ago
No she broke her leg and had to have surgery...
Then she thought she was still racing and broke her other leg, and they couldn't do more surgery on her...
Anyways cats don't race...
