Bobby Womack and his brothers' (The Valentinos') original version of IT'S ALL OVER NOW positively BLOWS AWAY The Stones' cover version !!! If Mick Jagger thinks he can out sing Bobby Womack, he must be CRAZY !!!
So when the Verve got sued for using the Stones' version to write "Bittersweet Symphony" - and thereafter had to credit Jagger-Richards as co-writers - why didn't they actually have to credit the Womacks? (I think I know the answer; just checking to see if anyone else has one.)
had this by them in the 60s but it was a re-issue on soul city, does anyone know what label it was originaly released on here in the U K , real nice to hear it again thanks for posting regards dave
If I'd have listened to this version all those years ago, I probably wouldn't have bothered with the Rolling Stones...but then again.....anyway, thanks for the posting...just listen to that feeling in the singers voice
I sing the line as "it hurt, but my eyes are open now". The Stones say "She hurt my eyes open", which makes no sense at all to me. Originaly it was "She had my nose open", which I've been told means "I was in love with her".
This song was a SAR Records record. Bobby swore up and down to Sam Cooke that he didn't want the RS to record this song. Sam was sold on letting the RS, the "ghetto Beatles", record this song. Sam owned the publishing, and said to Bobby, "I'm trying to tell you in a nice way that they're going to record this songf...". After Bobby received his first royalty check from this song, he was all in. He's stated on several occasions that he's tried to have the RS record another song of his.
The Stones heard this song by the Valentino's first during their 1964 initial US tour. All of the Stones were on for extended interviews with Murray the K on this WINS radio show in NYC, & Murray played this side for them. They raved on it & said "it was their kind of song"....I remember hearing the interview live as a boy, recalling it later because that same year the Stones released their cover version which became better known. Stones did it great..but they owe the Womacks on this one.
@caravancollectors: "that same year the Stones released their cover version which became better known. Stones did it great..but they owe the Womacks on this one." A whole lot of soul and R&B-influenced performers owe Bobby Womack a big debt. He was a genius songwriter for soul, an ace session player (guitar) and in-demand producer and back-up singer.. as well as great performer himself. I still can't believe all the hot licks Bobby and Joe South played on all of those Wilson Pickett records.
@williamg2552 I agree. That's the case with many songs originally penned and sung by Blacks for an R&B audience...then when white artists grab the song, it's "watered down" a tad, and delivered to the masses...you can tell Mick Jagger's trying to emulate Bob on his own version, but he doesn't quite achieve his aim. Etiher way, Bobby (and Sam) got PAID off the publishing.
@indure08 You can't possibly be serious. The original writers/performers get big credit for coming up with it, but to say the Rolling Stones "watered it down" is completely preposterous, as they IMPROVED it by 50,000 times!
@guyNbluejeans Ummm...I am serious. You disagree, and relax, it's alright. I simply do NOT think they (the Stones) improved it, even by 10 points. Calm down...we have our own personal tastes, and lets leave it at just that.
Wow! I always thought the Rolling Stones were the ones who did this first. This is so cool. The Rolling Stones just took this song and made it more of a guitar driven rock song. I love both versions now. Peace.
Odlično. Nikad čuo ovu verziju.

Sounds surprisingly country to me. Add a banjo and it would sound like a jug band.

Why did The Stones replace
"Had my nose open"
with
"Hurt my nose open"?
What does "Hurt my nose open" even mean?

@hwgray My guess is that Jagger had never heard the expression "had my nose open," and so he sang what he thought he heard!
