King of Fighters is one of the best Fighting Game series ever, I put it up there with Street Fighter and over Tekken. King of Fighters 98 in particular I think is the best installment, mainly because of the game mechanics, incredible gameplay and roster of cool characters.

Then came the garbage that was 99.....

Agreed with the reviewer. The characters are unique and the stages are detailed, snk really does not rehash the backgrounds--they're unique and varied. Pretty impressive given that they have so many fighting games.

@iTrolledABearTwice Eh, depends on how much of a player you are. If you've never played a KOF game, it's '98 right away. Better yet, '96 is coming out soon on PSN. Awesome production values, fun gameplay and a cast of classics. It's also out on Virtual Console.

The NeoGeo Rom version is the original, which is the best and way better than the "Ultimate Match" one, they screwed KOF up after SNK being bought by whoever that changed "SNK" to "SNK Playmore". After 13 years I'm still a fan of KOF98 and still playing it. Best acade fighting game ever!

I think people got mistaken about the title of the game because of what the announcer says in the intro of the actual game, when he's saying talking about in 94 this and in later years that, I kind of remember the announcer guy saying something like "Dream Match never ends" even though the title is "The Slugfest", as a matter of fact the ROM version the guy in the video plays is the actual arcade version

However, the only SNK game that I can say truly innovative is "Rage of The Dragons".

The way your partners waited and watched while you fought. Everytime your character got hit, they'd facepalm.... good times... They probably got rid of it cause it could distract you or whatever, but I never saw the problem. Yes, it would mean they'd have to draw a few extra sprites for each character, but COME ON!

First of all, none of the characters are unbalanced or broken - which you should praise SNK for because of the amount of characters that KOF has - and it certainly isn't a quarter eater, it depends on the arcade owners settings - they make it hard deliberately to get more money, SNK have nothing to do with that. In fact of all of them, KOF 98 is one of the easiest. Don't make up bad points about a game just because you suck at it. I suck at Street Fighter 4, but I know its a really good game.
