They're really pretty decent offroad, and a lot of fun, in stock configuration.

But if you take a pre-1986 solid front axle toyota ($3000), give it a 4" suspension lift ($1200), good 35" mud terrains ($800), 5.29 gears ($150), and selectable front and rear lockers $2500, you'll have an extremely capable offroad vehicle for $7650ish. You can do it a lot cheaper if you use automatic lockers or welded diffs. Decent armor and dual transfer case can be added for another $1200 or so.

your spending more money than you need. Go to the junkyard, axles, lifts, transmissions, differentials, lockers.... you can find everything you need in one. and a lot are still in good condition.

Did you hear about this new feature on Chevy trucks? It's really awesome. It's called "Heated Tailgates". It's advertised as "Perfect for keeping your fingernails warm for whenever you need to push your Chevy." Toyota trucks suck. They don't have Heated Tailgates. Instead they have this thing called "an engine". What the hell does that do? Sure as hell doesn't keep your fingernails warm.

I will take a full-size Chevy over a Toyota but with gas prices the way they are and the fact that I would take a Toyota pickup over an S10, I have to go with the Toyota. But now if gas was a dollar a gallon i would have me a 1980 Chevy K10 4x4 with a 350 and I would drive that thing everywhere and anywhere
