You left out the rather odd reason as to why the locomotives are in their present condition: The Maine Forest Service unwittingly burned the engine house to the ground during a controlled blaze, which severely damaged the locomotives, and exposed them to the elements. Before that happened, they were both in virtually immaculate order.
The Ten wheeler is ex New York Central. Very, Very rare! If they sit long enough, they'll be saved. The building should be put back up aroung them It was there 60 years or so.
The park service burned it by mistake. The shed was not to be burned, but there was a miscommunication. If someone had a few million dollars they could restore these locomotives. Good size for a tourist railroad.
Sadly it wouoldnt be worth building those steamers. It wouldnt count as preservation. Id rather spend my millions on bringing back existing steamers and not building new ones. If you want something super, get a 2-8-4 berkshire that was Lima built.
this is meant for informal and entertainment puposes only. i seriously believe these locos do not belong in the woods where the general public cannot view them. bring them out and restore them in any way!
actualy the locos could be removed. there have been locomotives in worse shape that have been disassembled and transported elsewhere. then they were reassembled and restored or simply given a cosmetic restoration. yea these wonderful locos dnt belong in the forrest in my oppinion cause they arent native there. And as for the reason they are still there they arent outmoded anymore for a tourist rr.
I could leave it be but...wrong answer. When these engines were moved to their current RR they were dismantled and carried over the lake in pecies while it was frozen over in the deep winter. You obviously did not take these photos your self or did any online research about theses engines because then you would know there is no road that leads up to where they sit. Yeah be nice to have them cosmeticly restored indoors, but who has that kind of money?
@sgprailfan Well if they was to be brought back to life they would have to be brought back over the lake the same way they came. In pieces and drug over the frozen lake. otherwise theres the option of helicopters and boats.
@Kleman09 I have a a friend who says he a a group of people(i never heard of them) are going to buy them to restore them. He said that the mayor has yet to make a decision. I won't believe him till I see them in town. Now after reading the comments and video I am beginning to believe him less. He said they can get $20,000 for both so if this does happen(we won't know till June) I will have to let you know. Funny I found this video after he told me the story. I was not even looking them up funny.
The extreme amounts of funding that would be required to restore (what's left of) the Eagle Lake locomotives to operation. The whole things are covered in rust, the boilers are shot, there are tons of parts missing, etc.
4-6-0=NYC , 2-8-0=Rutland, thats like two of the most rare locomotives anyone would find!!!!

With that kind of money. We might as well build a new Super Hudson or Niagara. Amtrak equiped of course.

Germany and England have brand new steam engines. The next line to be built if they had not stopped building them.

Sad. They need to be retrieved, given a decent coat of paint, and put on display. NOUGH!!!
Trainfanatic192 2 years ago
The parkmservice owns them and has done some stablizing work.
Kleman09 2 years ago
So? There's a big differance between stabilized and cosmetically restored.
Trainfanatic192 2 years ago
I know. How about full restoration for a person who wants a nearly impossible feat to complete?
Kleman09 2 years ago
No. They'd get halfway through and half to stop, leaving the locomotives completely disassembled so that now we can't even look at them on display.
Trainfanatic192 2 years ago
and you based that fact on....
