  • Can I use it on a D300?

  • Yup.

  • Would this work on a d3100?

  • @KevalProduction yep but manual focus and exposure only.

  • @superkiwizorro how bout the d5000, can it meter with this lense?

  • @Brotmaschine08 nah, it's like what i said about d3100 above.

  • Hey hows it going?

Does this lens work on Nikon FE-2?

  • @HaydenHislop my boyfriend and i are doing good. we're just covering for lilkiwiguy because he and his family are at their vacationing house in new zealand. thanks for asking.

yeah, the lens will work on FE2 no problem.

  • thank you for your info's very kind of you.

  • hey, how are you,can i use this lens for D7000?

  • We're doing great, thank you. We've been working on cars the whole time since we stopped making videos for YouTube. Fun times.

Yes, you can use it on D7000, no problem.

  • @3retxed Yes you can i have one on my D7000

  • @Stechpanna lol, thanks for repeating lilkiwiguy's answer. that was unnecessary.

  • what are the other Nikon pancake lenses?

  • Any Series E lens is a pancake lens (28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 100mm, and 135mm. The 45mm ƒ/2.8 AI-P is the mother of them.

  • @hndrksy Voigtlander do a 40mm and a 20mm which seem like very good lenses

  • Voigtlander is "eh".

  • hi i got the nikon lens series E from my dad.. im new in photographer.. can it be use for nikon D3100?? i never try before.. thanks..

  • Yup but manual focus only because, well, it's a manual focus lens.

  • Very nice video and informative.

I recently purchased the Nikon D3100 dslr, and looking into buying a 50mm lens.....manual focus stricktly of course......I want to acheive that shallow depth of field for more cinematic effect.....what is the difference between the f1/8vsf1/4?

the f 1/4 seems more expensive; why is that?

    tks.

  • ƒ/1.4: use from F/2.0 to F/4.0 (F/5.6 for some models)

ƒ/1.8: use from F/4.0 to F/8.0 (down to F/16 for FX / Film)

If you want shallow depth of field, 50mm ƒ/1.4 will do. It is more expensive because of the larger maximum aperture.

  • Wich are other pancakes? I know only 45mm 2.8P and his "father" GN, 50mm 1.8E. and... i'm so curious :D

  • Yes, the 45mm ƒ/2.8 AI-P is one of them. Also, all Series E lenses are pancakes because of their compact size and length. For example, 28mm ƒ/2.8, 35mm ƒ/2.5, 50mm ƒ/1.8, 100mm ƒ/2.8, and 135mm ƒ/2.8.

  • You say that the optical sharpness performance is excellent @f2-f8; would you say that this lens is better in low light shooting compared to 50mm 1.8d?

  • Nope, the 50mm ƒ/1.8D AF is bad from F/1.8 to F/2.8 then gets better at F/4.0.

  • how many "clicks" are there between f1.8 and 2.8? i can feel 2 on mine, but one is so tiny that i think it shouldn't be there... and what aperture does that unmarked position represent?

also, do you have any focus tips for this lens or it's all about the practice? i use d80 and shoot mostly low light with it :)

  • There is only one stop between F/1.8 and F/2.8; the unmarked aperture is F/2.0.

Simply use the help of focus indicator (or electric rangefinder) to focus the lens manually. Meter in your head because the lens does not have CPU contacts to communicate with the camera. Be sure to check the histograms to make sure the photograph is well exposed. Finally, have fun with it.

  • hello sir. whats the difference between nikon 50mm 1.8 AF, 50mm 1.8D and 50mm AIS. Im planning to buy one but its a bit confusing 'coz there a lot of nikon 50mm lens?! please let me know the differences.... thank you.

  • Please watch our Nikkor Lens Terminology video.

  • any one having issues installing this on the camera?, it seems you just screw it in, but it won't go all the way as a regular AF lens, no click or anything to let me know it's all the way as it should.

i could still take photos and it seems to work great, but it came off last time, while was trying to focus.

  • It shouldn't be like that; all Nikon-F bayonet lenses have the same design. Try checking the lens' mount lock point (small U-shaped hole) for anything. If so, use a dental pick to pull out whatever it is then try mounting it again.

  • cool video, man. A great way of presenting/reviewing a lens.

  • I love Stereolab <3

  • bought one today with an EM body FOR Use on my fujis2,,,seems to work great ..nice pancake lens....

  • I seriously wish Nikon would make more pancake lenses... not only are they sexy but the super low profile is something I would definitely pay for. Even if they stay manual focus I would love to have updated versions of say a 24mm and 50mm pancakes... Anybody agree?

  • holy shit, You got one in really good condition.

  • I buyed one today

  • bought not buyed

  • i got the same lens today. i just tried it out with my d90. it's awesome! works only in manual mode. so you can't use the pop up flash with this lens?

  • In manual mode, you will have full control of the flash, however, due to its non-CPU lens, it is the best to use the flash in manual mode as well (set the flash for M) via the menus.

  • is it ok to use this lens on nikon F5. some had comment not to use AIS lenses on F5. WHY?

  • I am sorry to say this, they're wrong. You can use AI'D (converted), AI, AIS, AI-P, and PC / PC-E manual focus lenses on the F5 without a problem.

You MUST NOT mount a Pre-AI lens onto the F5 because it uses different bayonet structure that could get stuck, unless you have your Pre-AI lens converted to AI (AI'D).

This 50mm ƒ/1.8 AIS Series-E will mount on F5 just fine because it is a AIS lens.

  • will this work with d90 and d300s dx body? will i be able to shoot with auto focus with this lens?

  • On the D300s, after filling the Non-CPU Lens Data information with the focal length and maximum aperture, yes, no problem.

On the D90, due to lack of an exterior AI (Aperture Indexing) ring, you can only use the lens in M Mode using M (not AF-S / AF-C / AF-A). Meter will not function; you will need to do it in your head.

No autofocusing because it is a manual focus lens.

  • i like this song!!! stereolab . nice lens. ;)

  • Great lens. There's one on my D40 a lot of the time. The "pancake" description makes more sense to me now I see it on a D3!

  • I have a series E and i couldnt be happier with it! It's my fav lens i own and it always delivers. I need my nifty fifty

  • does it fit with nikon d40?

  • Aye. Oui. Ja. Si. 是. Yes.

  • @jarvie10

    yup, totally manual though.

I used it on my d40 for a year, it kicked ass.

  • thx :) that's help

  • I reckon this is the first black one, I've got the second one which has silver/chrome ring and slightly bigger...any difference?

  • Two differences: The color and sharpness performance. This black version is the latest model with a couple of tweaks.

  • I've been hearing Non-CPU lens most of the time but exactly what do you mean by this? Is there any effect on the image if this is non CPU?

  • Non-CPU lenses don't have any contact chips to send information to the camera for aperture value, focal length, focusing distance, etc. etc. Most of hardcore manual focus lenses are non-CPU.

  • I used to have one. It's a nice little lens with descent image quality, and can be bought for under $50. When I went digital. I sold it because the camera bodies I have(D100 and D50) do not meter with manual focus lenses. If I get a D300 next year, I'll probably pick up another 50 1.8 E Series lens.
