Ugly low singing! Just awful sound production! I wonder what happened to beauty which is the purpose of singing as well as moving the heart if such ugly low voices as Prina, Bartoli, Kazarova and Genaux are promoted?! They are just profanation of true baroque and a shame for modern opera!
@hautecontrre Sara Mingardo is better both in musicality and voice than Sonia Prina; besides, Ms. Mingardo is a pure contralto, not pretending to be a contralto like Ms. Prina does!
@hautecontrre how can somebody be sometimes a contralto and sometimes not ? O_O
Sara Mingardo is a pure contralto and she has a contralto timbre. But of course it depends on the role and the colour of the voice she uses, of course it's not a matter of "switching" the voice, but "switching" the colour!
I just mean that Sara often sounds at a half of her voice, which is tipically for many contraltos and mezzos. She struggles with low notes with varied success. Unlike for example Sonia who is more stable.
@hautecontrre I have already told you: for me, it differs in matter of colours, as to say that Maria Callas's Elvira and Maria Callas' Maddalena de Coigny differ in terms of colour (and styles too), but she was indeed a soprano :)
Given that the note she sounds at 2:09 is apparently (in modern tuning) an F#2, and a well-projected one, I don't know how else her voice could be characterized. Any female singer who can comfortably sing that note is not a mezzo.
Davvero brava! Il canto è eccellente e le agilità sono rapide e granite, anche se poco ortodosse e troppo meccaniche, un po' stile Horne degli Anni Ottanta o Bartoli di sempre. Spero che questo a lungo andare non le nuoccia!
I would say that she is more of Alto than Contralto because her timbre and tone is still fairly light. A Contralto would have a darker toned voice. Don't you think?
hello! women are either sopranos, mezzos or contraltos, there is no such thing as an "alto" , at least in opera. I would love to know who invented that term and why, and what "alto" stands for in their minds. Greetings!
in the chorus, there are 2 lines for women, soprano and alto, and the range for each line isn't as wide as the parts written for the soloists. The solos are written for specific voice types, since only one person sings them. So to answer your query, the term "alto" was invented by the same Italians who came up with all the other music lingo, and it is occasionally misused by people who are more familiar with choral music than they are with opera.
Alto is the male voice, mainly sung by men with a well-developed falsetto. Many pieces were written for this voice and until Deller revived the art, were sung by contraltos who have a quite different sound.
I'm under the impression she darkens her lower register purposedly... (call them chest notes if you like) always a mistake in my opinion because it spoils the beauty of the timbre and could endanger her singing too
Wow! I absolutely love Sonia Prina and she has done amazing in this piece. She has such a well trained lower and higher register! The diction is splendid. Bravo!
This is absolutely outstanding! What are you talking about, legato? This is exactly how it must be done. So nice to hear well trained and developed chest and mixed register! Why isn't she more well-known? These days there is great scarcity of mezzo voices because all the lower voices are told or decide they are dramatic sopranos!
i love her!! i remember when she studied with me at the " conservatorio verdi of milan" very good contralto!!! vai sonia sei veramente brava , mi ricordo ancora quando cantavi con noi insiseme all'orchestra del consevatorio con (bizzarro)...... sono proprio contenta per il tuo successo!!! te lo meriti cara sonia!!

Perhaps. I think that this applies to all. 5 billion people - 5 billion pares of ears - 5 billions opinions.
But, aren't you agree, that Sara's low notes and middle register often differ in various recordings. "Spesso" and Stabat Mater for example.
