Superb artist arguably the best Swing/Jazz pianist we will ever see. A sad loss to jazz, but his music lives on and hopefully will for future generations to marvel at.
The 3rd time I saw him was in Phoenix, AZ in a 2000+ concert hall, and on the same bill was the Herby Mann Quintet. They drew a measly 200!!! This was a time when both musicians were at the peak of their success. It was embarrassing to say the least. However, we were treated up close and personal, and it was breathless.
How does he do that? The way he pulls off these amazing grooves and sly licks, but all the while he's just looking around, smiling at the audience and just generally admiring his surroundings. Just pure class
It is not white or black or showing that you are skilled. It is having the feeling and joy when you are playing. As with Erroll - you can se by his face expression that playing is just joy to him.
I'm not saying that white musicians are not good musicians, the are very good, and well accomplished, in popular, classical, some Jazz, but the best Jazz musicians are Afro-American, because of the the timing, the beat, rythm, sound, and this a known fact, it's already confirmed before you ever thought about being here, black people are naturally born with an ear for music, and by the way, black people are Opera Singers, and are classical music.
um have you heard of bill evans? he makes ur entire arguement void. There are so many socio-economic and cultural factors that result in a majority of black jazz musicians. Because there are a higher majority of black jazz muscians therefore is a higher percentage of great black musicians.
ANYONE from any ethnicity could potentially be a great jazz musician. There is nothing in ANY ethnicities genes that prevents this.
it is true that Mr. Garner can't read music, but he is a genius, others copy his style of playing, mainly the white piano players, and that's a "fact", he doesn't have to go to any concert to hear any one and copy the music, they go to his concerts and copy his music, check that out!
what are you trying to say that white people are not good musicians??? maybe you dont know that jazz is based on classic music, and i have never heard about black compose.... and also the best musicians are not black people, but Gypsies... every kid knows that, and gypsies are not blac.
Fact: Mr. Garner can't read music, but he can go to somebody's concert listen to the player and go back home and play the person's concert note by note. Quicktolisten- I have to agree with you. His timing is perfect.
The most soulful player I have ever heard. He is truly a genius. I'm am greatful that he gave us such wonderful music. His music is always exciting, inspiring, and I never get tired of listening to it. RLK40
erroll garner is my hero, and i'm a trumpet player primarily! his rearrangements of well known standards are so creative! wish i could play the piano as well as him :(
Erroll your the best, I just couldn't get away from your piano playing, your the "YouTube" on the internet, I have a Baby Grand piano at my home, I don't get a chance to even practice, I had lessons at a very young age, now I'm an Artist(accomplished) painter, and I can see my Art work as great as you play on your keys, I'm also gifted as an Artist, so I understand your piano playing is extraordinary. Love you
I first heard this great piano player when I was 11 yeras of age, this was in Jamaica while listining to the radio show Piano Play Time on RJR radio. I've never seen him perform until I watched these clips on You Tube, thanks thejazzsingers for this post.
His hands, his eyes -- a piano player touched by God. Apart from the music, I especially dig those wonderful close-ups of his face -- a man deeply in love with his music and the audience.
Feel free to drop by my little jazz/ swing site. Link is in my profile.
a very modest player... i just dont think he realised how good he really was, could have given peterson a run for his money.... i think this track is called errol's theme.... one player i never got to see live... a big loss in the jazz world
Just another song that Erroll delivers the definitive version of. I've notice he had a habit of that.

I have allways love Errol Garner and his beautiful music and talent. He is part of the real heritage americans have.
What I don't get is why today the hype is about garbage that is not only terrible crap but represent the lowest society has to offer.
Long live Errol Garner!!
