@tedbratton This rule didnt exist at the time. According to the rules back then, it was clearly a legal serve. The 2 things that strike me as interesting is Jiang and Waldners reaction. Jiang clearly overreacted and Waldner who has a reputation for having good sportsmanship didnt go and correct the score. Had this happened in 1994 or something, I think Walder may have just purposely served the net ball into the net.
I'm not a table tennis refree but from the slow motion, Jiang lobbed the ball from an open palm into the air before serving with his bat above table level and behind the table line. That ought to be legal.
chinese are always cheap shot... lack of sportsmanship.

read about this incident in newspaper 20years ago. I think jiang should have accepted ref's decision otherwise whta's this point of having a ref?

I think it's because Jiang hides his blade under the table before serving. I think it's stupid to stop the game just because of that.

Actually he didn't. It was a mistake from the judge. Finally they changed the judge. And even the Swedish team thought this was a mistake..
