Increases in lean muscle mass result from what you're doing in the gym. They're IRON related so to speak and I think we both know that. The question is: How much protein is required to repair muscle and rebuild it bigger and stronger after the Iron work? I'm slowly coming to the realization that it's much less then I ever thought. I'm taking NO protein powder and have about 1 CLIF bar per week because they taste good, not for the protein. Son-of-a-bitch, I'm starting to realize Steve is right.
CR250, boy are you right! The general belief in the bodybuilding community (for the most part), tells a different story. I decided back in May 09' to try out what Steve was talking about in regards to protein; taking in less protein, eliminating or reducing protein powders,..and the idea of " catching up " on protein. In 2 weeks I'll hit the 6 month mark with this new approach. SO FAR....SO GOOD. I've lost some LBS of fat, and lost NO muscle. But my eyes are peeled for changes believe me.
so many bodybuilders (naturals and steroiders) eat excess protein... its so hard to determine whether hes right or not... cuz i've spoken with experts on both sides
If you folks want results, I'll tell you what to do: Type in the following in your desktop: bodyperformancetvdotcom. At least look at his blogs and free exercises there. But, if you REALLY want expert advice, join for a month. Just a month. $20 and you'll be a weight loss expert!
The scale and waist measurement are the ultimate determiners as far as what's REALLY going on with your body as far as fat loss. Your body will flucuate from day to day with weight, but the overall trend will be downward at approximately 1 lb. or so per week. If you're not losing, you're still eating too many calories or not doing enough cardio. Increase your walking or make some slight calorie cuts until the scale starts moving down. The scale and waist measurement will tell you what to do.
dustin, you really won't know excatly how many calories you're consuming OR burning. You can ballpark the intial calorie intake by looking at labels...this is true. You'll find you eat many of the same things day after day, so you'll memorize pretty quickly what is what as far as cals. Write down all meals and snacks. I do 3 meals plus two snacks per day. If the scale is " trending " downward at about 1 lb. per week or so, you're doing fine. If you're losing more then that, add food back.
It is amazing how people think consuming fiber-laden foods will speed up your metabolism, like grapefruit and celery. You said it Steve! Of course we need fiber to help things come out easier and it supposedly cleans you out, but it won't cause weight loss! Some idiots don't understand humans can't digest cellulose. They just don't understand that we don't have the enzymes to do it. I think a few animals can though (termites, deer come to mind), but regardless folks Turano has a very accurate..
i know it's easy to track how many calories you consume by reading labels, but how do you know how many calories you burn throughout the day to make sure you are at a calorie deficit.
You have to create caloric deficit on as many days as you can. Eat just a bit less or clean up your diet. Cardio is a must as it burns calories. Besides just telling you reps and what and how to train cardio, I would join Steve's site for a couple of months. You'll learn much better how to train, do cardio and lean out. $40 maybe $60 bucks over 3 months and you'll be leaner and more muscular then before you went to college. Because you probably were not as good as you could been before College.
TheDudeFactory, you've just been consistantly consuming a few more calories then you've been burning while at College. Everyone does this. Beer and bartime eating are probably a huge culprit. With everytime you did stuff like that, or were too busy to workout and burn off some calories because of studying or other committments, you were putting on a certain small amount of bodyfat. It just added up over the years. It happens slowly. It's called creeping obesity. Easy to turn around actually.
I am 21 years old, 6ft tall and about 185 pounds. I used to be really lean and muscular looking but 4 years of college has really made me fat and doughy. I don't want to get big, I want to be lean and cut. I know cardio is a must, but how should I lift weights? Like how many reps, sets, etc.? I know you've probably answered this before, but 200+ videos is a lot to go through. Thanks.
I did. You can check out a picture of me on my main You Tube page. It's called consistent, hard work. Something MOST weight lifters are not familiar with.
ive got a question. im 190 pounds and workout 4-5 times a week. i have a small protein shake before and after my workout and that in all has about 65 grams of protein. am i eating more protein than my body can handle and just putting extra stress on my kidneys for processing the protein?
I listened to your Radio Show about protein and you explained everything perfectly! gj!
But u mention if we want to improve our performance (Build muscle) more important are carbs...does a normal diet of 5 meals/day aport sufficient doses of carbs or we need to increase that number? asuming we are alrdy in shape and want to improve performance.
Hi, So your telling me that you only have to have 50-60 grams of protein a day? This must be a very generalized view. Doesn't your body thrive on what your athletic output is? Especially when your in a specific energy output (anaerobic, or aerobic)? That means a high caliber athlete only needs 8-10 grams a meal? That's a ridiculous conecpt and I would like to know where your getting all your facts from.
the body can only build 1lb-2lbs of protein a week, so if you do the math i guess it will put you in that 50-60grams a day range... besides higher caliber athlets would require more carbs, not proteins.
Well put Steve... I always smile when I see people drinking protein shakes now that they have started at the gym, because it will magically make them muscular... I've been asked how do I get arms that big... honestly as if lifting the weights for the past 7 years had little to do with it... 'they' look for a magic drink or mystery supplement.
Eat right... eat good food, you don't need much extra protein or any extra at all, and exercise regularly.
Hi. Had to stop working out both cardio and weight training for 2 weeks as I was unwell. I felt like I lost a fair bit of muscle. Would it be easy to put it back on when i train again?
no its an illusion... He said right here, those things take more calories to digest, he also mentions that fiber keeps you full longer. There aren't many tricks to getting in great shape.. ITs about working correctly, and having a balanced diet and most of all preventing injury.
i've been following what steve says cuz it makes the most sense to me and i have lost weight and gained muscle...and i dont worry about protein at all. so yeah, i dont think any extra protein is necessary at all...just extra calories you dont need lol...
Biggest loser has some very big people this year. I can't believe why they don't drop dead after a workout with these two morons? How the hell can the body take such abuse?
I always get confused by the largely inconsistent information about protein and weight training. There are bodybuilders who claim that research indicates a minimum of .8 grams of protein per lb body weight, in some cases even more. On the other hand, different research results may contradict each other...
So you eat no more than 50-60 g of protein a day yourself, Steve? If so, you definitely prove that it this is indeed enough, considering your physique. =)
Hm, when I think about it... actually this is not necessarily a proof, since different people have somewhat different biological preconditions. In theory you could simply be a person whose body utilizes protein very efficiently. =)
I'm merely speculating as a layperson here, not trying to criticize your statements or anything. I just like to contemplate things and take different perspectives into consideration. ^_^
It's a scientific fact the body doesn't need much more than 30-40 grams of protein a day. BUT PROETIN companies and the idiots they sponsor (steroid taking bodybuilders) would want you to think differently. I don't even know how much protein I eat during a normal day because our needs are so low & an average diet supplies 2-3 times the needed amount. I foucs on having a high carb drink after my workouts AND WORKING OUT!
These videos are great and it's generous of you to make all this info available for free. I have a question: My iPod with the Nike+ system tells me that I have burned 650 calories doing a 4.12 mile run at an average 10:20 per mile at my weight of 205 pounds. That sound like an awful lot when compared to your statement that running a marathon burns just 1300 calories. What's up with that?
Doesn't work like that Steve. It depends on the weight of the individual and fitness. People who weigh little probably don't need to lose weight, like those terribly thin marathon runners!!!!
So basically you are looking at people who are overweight or obese...usually this is 200+ pounds depending on the height. Most people burn 100+ calories per mile.... I think you were referring to half a marathon which is 13 miles not a full marathon which is 26 miles???? Then the maths work out!
Yes it does work like that. And I'm refering to average people when I'm talking about 100 calories a mile. Olympic Marathners burn 50 caloies a miles!!! But they run that distance in 5 minutes. It takes the average person 15 mintues to run a miole and burn 100 calories. The marathoner would burn 150 caloies in that 15 minutes and burn probably about 80% fat calories.
But Olympic Marathoners don't need to worry about their weight! Have you ever seen one, they look like sticks with legs?! If anything they need to put some on!!!!
They may burn 50 calories per mile which maybe half of what the average person does but obese people are hardly average weight!
Walking a mile for a morbidly obese individual would be like me going for a long run .....everybody is different but the average is 100 calories per mile but that is deceptive!
What I mean by deceptive is that most people who are watching your show are also wanting to lose weight....many are larger and heavier than average...therefore they will be burning more calories than 100 per mile!
Nope, it isn't. Over weight, out of shape people do not move very fast. And their body give up calories very slowly. You can try applying YOUR logic but it doesn't over ride the facts.
I wonder how many past contestants of TBL kept the weight off. Anybody know? Are they all fat again? It doesn't seem realistic that they are going to lose(sometimes) hundreds of pounds within a few weeks and then keep it off.
You're right. I have a People magazine with a couple on the front who was on the show. They both regained 40-50 pounds because they didn't have 8 hours a day to train. That's not realistic! Nor were they talk how TRUE weight gaina and weight loss occur!
So steve, you dont need to have lots of those "pure protein bars" for snacks and meals or whatever. Just the protein after you work out? the rest is just a waste?
No you don't. There's nothing wrong with them as a snack BUT the extra protein will not increase muscle growth. It will just add to your calorie total.
NO YOU DON'T. Not even close. Marathoners burn 10 calories per minute while running at a 5 MINUTE mile pace. That's 50 calories a mile and 1300 calories during a marathon! ANY OTHER QUESTIONS!
Your the only one i've ever heard saying this, I've read lots on elite marathon runners and i run multiple marathons every year, but how come pretty much every other expert on long distance running state double the calories burned than you do?
That's what I would like to know too. From what I've heard so far though, excess skin can only contract to a certain degree. As far as I know if there's lots of excess skin it needs to be removed surgically.
Thank you for the confirmation, Steve. By the way, I noticed that you respond to comments a lot. Considering how many comments and probably also pm's you get, this really shows that you care about your viewers. Many people with many subscribers on Youtube don't take the considerable time to respond individually, which is totally understandable since time is a rare resource today.
Lol I don't think There are very many people that are uneducated about fitness who are planning to run a marathon any time soon. To a guy sitting on the couch it doesn't really matter if you burn 1300 or 2600. The point is your not going to burn 1300 calories eating a couple of calorie negitive foods, and for the record it is closer to 2600 depending on your size.
Steve, I remember in another video that you did, you said that you burn 100 calories a mile when you run. If that is the case, then after running a marathon that would be 2600 calories.
Yes, the average person burns about 100 calories a miles (15 minutes) when running. A marathoner burns about 50 calories per miles but that's in 5 minutes!!
Steve, you always make me laugh after I watch your videos because I always realize the ignorance of what really matters in weight loss rather than that junk we are fred from "nutrition tips" and junk from advertisements and television.
1300 for the average marathoner cuz their already very skinny hence burn very few calories, ur not gonna see any big guy running a marathon unless hes a freak of nature.
steve your looking great, how did the tri tendon bone rupture turn out im going through same thing right noe cant wait to start training again in jan.did you get back to the same weights you used before?hey, thanks for all your vids and info so long
Thank you for asking. Yes I am 100% but I had a good surgeon and was very careful and slow when I came back. Sorry to hear about your injury. It does come back. just be careful, patient and persistent.
1300 cals to run a marathon!!!!! How many marathons have you run?

In 2 weeks I'll hit the 6 month mark with this new approach. SO FAR....SO GOOD. I've lost some LBS of fat, and lost NO muscle. But my eyes are peeled for changes believe me.

The scale and waist measurement will tell you what to do.
brushfour 2 years ago
dustin, you really won't know excatly how many calories you're consuming OR burning.

I think a few animals can though (termites, deer come to mind), but regardless folks Turano has a very accurate..
keyscoob 2 years ago
are the heart rate monitors with chest straps a reliable method of monitoring calories burned?
What do you think Steve?
Sakasma 2 years ago
I'm sure they're not bad. Just like a pedometer. But if you watch what you eat and exercise consistently you will lose weight.
BodyPerformanceTV 2 years ago
i know it's easy to track how many calories you consume by reading labels, but how do you know how many calories you burn throughout the day to make sure you are at a calorie deficit.
dustinkagan 2 years ago
You have to create caloric deficit on as many days as you can. Eat just a bit less or clean up your diet. Cardio is a must as it burns calories. Besides just telling you reps and what and how to train cardio, I would join Steve's site for a couple of months. You'll learn much better how to train, do cardio and lean out. $40 maybe $60 bucks over 3 months and you'll be leaner and more muscular then before you went to college. Because you probably were not as good as you could been before College.
brushfour 2 years ago
TheDudeFactory, you've just been consistantly consuming a few more calories then you've been burning while at College. Everyone does this. Beer and bartime eating are probably a huge culprit. With everytime you did stuff like that, or were too busy to workout and burn off some calories because of studying or other committments, you were putting on a certain small amount of bodyfat. It just added up over the years. It happens slowly. It's called creeping obesity. Easy to turn around actually.
brushfour 2 years ago
I am 21 years old, 6ft tall and about 185 pounds. I used to be really lean and muscular looking but 4 years of college has really made me fat and doughy. I don't want to get big, I want to be lean and cut. I know cardio is a must, but how should I lift weights? Like how many reps, sets, etc.? I know you've probably answered this before, but 200+ videos is a lot to go through. Thanks.

If I do cardio I do around 35 reps.

Probably not from 2 small protein shakes.

That's a ridiculous conecpt and I would like to know where your getting all your facts from.
paoloex 2 years ago
I'm a nutrition major and I learned the same thing. They say that Olympics only need between 60-80 grams a day of protein!
theDrumkilla 2 years ago
What about carbs how many do they need?
kvnbk 2 years ago
It depends on your goal:
Muscle gain>>> C=40 P=40 F=20
Weight Loss>>> C=30 P=60 F=10
But it's really what's good for you. I know you hate to hear that, but everybody's different.
theDrumkilla 2 years ago
the body can only build 1lb-2lbs of protein a week, so if you do the math i guess it will put you in that 50-60grams a day range... besides higher caliber athlets would require more carbs, not proteins.
DonnieCash 2 years ago
Great vid by a great guy!
keyscoob 2 years ago
Well put Steve... I always smile when I see people drinking protein shakes now that they have started at the gym, because it will magically make them muscular... I've been asked how do I get arms that big... honestly as if lifting the weights for the past 7 years had little to do with it... 'they' look for a magic drink or mystery supplement.
Eat right... eat good food, you don't need much extra protein or any extra at all, and exercise regularly.

SkallagrimNilsson 2 years ago
Hm, when I think about it... actually this is not necessarily a proof, since different people have somewhat different biological preconditions. In theory you could simply be a person whose body utilizes protein very efficiently. =)
I'm merely speculating as a layperson here, not trying to criticize your statements or anything. I just like to contemplate things and take different perspectives into consideration. ^_^
SkallagrimNilsson 2 years ago
It's a scientific fact the body doesn't need much more than 30-40 grams of protein a day. BUT PROETIN companies and the idiots they sponsor (steroid taking bodybuilders) would want you to think differently. I don't even know how much protein I eat during a normal day because our needs are so low & an average diet supplies 2-3 times the needed amount. I foucs on having a high carb drink after my workouts AND WORKING OUT!
BodyPerformanceTV 2 years ago

Hey Steve,
These videos are great and it's generous of you to make all this info available for free.
Atooney 2 years ago
That's sounds a bit high. Think about burning 100 calories per mile.
BodyPerformanceTV 2 years ago
Doesn't work like that Steve. It depends on the weight of the individual and fitness. People who weigh little probably don't need to lose weight, like those terribly thin marathon runners!!!!
So basically you are looking at people who are overweight or obese...usually this is 200+ pounds depending on the height. Most people burn 100+ calories per mile.... I think you were referring to half a marathon which is 13 miles not a full marathon which is 26 miles???? Then the maths work out!
NODDYFISCHER 2 years ago
Yes it does work like that. And I'm refering to average people when I'm talking about 100 calories a mile. Olympic Marathners burn 50 caloies a miles!!! But they run that distance in 5 minutes. It takes the average person 15 mintues to run a miole and burn 100 calories. The marathoner would burn 150 caloies in that 15 minutes and burn probably about 80% fat calories.
BodyPerformanceTV 2 years ago
But Olympic Marathoners don't need to worry about their weight! Have you ever seen one, they look like sticks with legs?! If anything they need to put some on!!!!
They may burn 50 calories per mile which maybe half of what the average person does but obese people are hardly average weight!
Walking a mile for a morbidly obese individual would be like me going for a long run .....everybody is different but the average is 100 calories per mile but that is deceptive!
NODDYFISCHER 2 years ago
What I mean by deceptive is that most people who are watching your show are also wanting to lose weight....many are larger and heavier than average...therefore they will be burning more calories than 100 per mile!
NODDYFISCHER 2 years ago
Nope, it isn't. Over weight, out of shape people do not move very fast. And their body give up calories very slowly. You can try applying YOUR logic but it doesn't over ride the facts.
BodyPerformanceTV 2 years ago
50-60 grams of protein a day, this is for people that don't workout right? Because I eat around 150-200 grams of protein. a day.

I wonder how many past contestants of TBL kept the weight off. Anybody know? Are they all fat again? It doesn't seem realistic that they are going to lose(sometimes) hundreds of pounds within a few weeks and then keep it off.
TheAtomicDon 2 years ago
You're right. I have a People magazine with a couple on the front who was on the show. They both regained 40-50 pounds because they didn't have 8 hours a day to train. That's not realistic! Nor were they talk how TRUE weight gaina and weight loss occur!
BodyPerformanceTV 2 years ago
I heard one guy named eric who lost over 200 pounds on the show regained almost all of it back. A shame.
AlexKidd5000 2 years ago
Probably. They don't teach them about realistic, effective weight loss and eating.
BodyPerformanceTV 2 years ago
So steve, you dont need to have lots of those "pure protein bars" for snacks and meals or whatever. Just the protein after you work out? the rest is just a waste?
Garrett1240 2 years ago
No you don't. There's nothing wrong with them as a snack BUT the extra protein will not increase muscle growth. It will just add to your calorie total.
BodyPerformanceTV 2 years ago
hey steve i don't eat meat am i getting enough protein

As long as you're getting other proteins from a vaiety of other sources. Milk, chesse, eggs, whole wheats, rice, beans you should be fine.

SkallagrimNilsson 2 years ago
Lol I don't think There are very many people that are uneducated about fitness who are planning to run a marathon any time soon. To a guy sitting on the couch it doesn't really matter if you burn 1300 or 2600. The point is your not going to burn 1300 calories eating a couple of calorie negitive foods, and for the record it is closer to 2600 depending on your size.
