I love both versions, but indeed Roberta has the better version. The music and ad-libs at the end are just moving. Luther's version has emotion but is too polished.....he should of stretched out a little bit. listen to the bass player at 4:08-10 on this one and the background vocal arrangement, just stellar.
wow! this song and 'just when i needed you' are amazing but hard to find gems in roberta flack's under-acknowledged music career. you won't truly understand until you own a copy of the 1981 bustin loose soundtrack ms. flack wrote & composed that spawned these gems. this is elite r&b here.
@bboohhmmaann luther in indeed on background vocals. he released his own version the same year and as much as i enjoy luther, roberta flack's version is tops.
@thirtydaes i prefer roberta's version. credit does have to go to the better arrangement, but yeah, roberta's singing, esp. in the last few minutes sealed it for me.
this is one of the few songs that someone else exceeded Luther. Luther's version was the first I ever heard but this one is my favorite, especially towards the end.
omg i love this! i just recently (finally) got a hold of the bustin loose soundtrack this is from and i'm in heaven. i've searched for it over 20 years and finally! this jam is exquisite, and rare. luther's version is good, but this, with roberta flack's lead vocals is just sublime. i love me some roberta flack! lol and this song is my favorite!
Listeningt to this, Luther must must have put down a demo track and Roberta sang from it. Her vocal style and nuances are same as Luther's Never Too Much version.
@iboudiop He started out as one of her background singers. This song was on her album for the movie "Bustin Loose" and he later did a version of it which also came out great! Although the song kinda makes me sad. I think about all the people we've lost..
I remember this joint VERY well...pre Luther explosion...and I always wondered why I seemed to already know the words...this whole soundtrack was HOT. Luther ended up singing most of his stuff after he penned it for other female artists, like Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Roberta, etc. He was good because he studied the background...and worked with the finest...to include Cissy Houston. I miss his SOUL!
Incredible ....the original is the best! Never heard this one till now....had heard Luther's but this one seems even more pure with Luther on background (he is one of the best vocalists from the last 30 years and he understood that the background singers sang the hook).
during the time Donny was living and I should have made that clear. This particular footage was on you tube and removed for some reason. I was reaching out in hopes that the person who first aired it would again do so. Donny at that time was playing the piano and Roberta had a "natural" and a gold sequined? dress on. Thanks...
I will never stop lovin this song..! Not only the beautiful voice of Roberta Flack, but the wonderful voice of Luther Vandross in the background makes this one of the best of the 80's in my opinion....
This is arguably one of the best R&B songs of 1981, such a beautiful song from a fabulous singer who doesn't receive enough acclaim for her talent, she's certainly one of the finest female vocalist ever.
What about Sarah Brigtman, she played Christine in the Phantom of the Opera for years and has a beautiful voice. BUT!!! Roberta Flack is definatly in with the greats who are actually great
You're welcome. when I saw the movie and heard this song I hoped that I would find the soundtrack someday. Sure enough I did. It's Roberta's hardest to find album.
Guess you're right, cause I didn't even know that disk exists. Will try to find it (hate to have an uncomplete collection) - Incidentally, got the Vandross disk....

Oh Wow. I once had the LP but it was stolen along with a collection I had. I've never been able to replace it. Any ideas?

Yes I am aware of that. The concert was held
