Gorgeous, breathtaking, perfect. Is there any reason why you have videos and clips on your myspace page (such as the one of you and Stephen Bogardus singing "What Would I Do", perhaps at a NY Gay Marriage concert) that you don't post on youtube? I know people would adore seeing them here, and they'd get so many more views.
thanks for the clip. saw the original with michael - there is now one like him...i have unsuccessfully searched for any recordings of his (other than falsettos, falsettoland) and no luck...is there anything out there that he has recorded?
You said you were looking for Michael Rupert recordings, but couldn't find anything other than Falsettos. You'll also find him on the following cast recordings:
@TheRealNathon Well a lot of people try it and their voice hasn't dropped all the way or they sing it effeminatly and then it sucks so if you're voice isn't either of those, go for it, I suppose. But it's going to be a very popular song so you might want to go with something a little rarer.
you might think MJ sings effeminate but he could easily sing this song w/ passion. It would be much like "she's out of my life". BTW i'm a countertenor and no i don't consider my voice effeminate. Effeminate to me are those that sound bad and prissy
I wasn't talking about passion or skill, I was talking about tone color and as a counter tenor you should know that. It's not about being bad or good. It's color.
i know, but since you are talking tone, that really is #3 in the whole singing thing. Passion is first. But i understand you :). Its just that you said "they sing it effeminatly and then it sucks"
btw: I'm not the usual hooty countertenor...i actually have a full voice in "diva" registers lol. It is kinda funny that i can do that w/o sounding "classical" lol. So as for what i "should know" as a countertenor, I personally don't find most countertenor colors good....
I played Marvin in the Southeast debut of Falsettos. I sent a letter to Michael (he was in Love! Valour! Compassion! at the time) and he sent back a signed Falsettos poster. Class act...and incredibly talented.
This song blows me away. One of my all time memorable moments in theatre.
I saw the show on its closing performance on Broadway. It was Pride Day and William Finn, on stage after the show, told the audience that closing it on that day was very poignant for him. I think he said something to the effect that it would be like closing Fiddler On The Roof on Rosh Hoshana..
Shocking that it lost Best Musical to Crazy For You, despite winning Best Book and Score.
Michael Rupert is a singer whose voice means so much to me. It can get right into the core of my soul. Once, I attended an audition performance of a musical "In the Blue Room" that Michael starred in. He was no less brilliant in it, as when he sang "Fade Away". Michael Rupert is the best. If I ever met him again, I'd cry. I love that guy, and may I always be his No. 1 fan. I hope he's happy and well. Wayne
Im not gay but this was a very good musical. Especially the song at the end. Very touching. You don't have to be gay to empathize with the words and music that bring this musical to life.
I love this video :-) thank you so much for posting it - this is one of my favorite songs from the show and it's nice to see how it was originally performed
In his Boston Globe theatre review in October 1993, Kevin Kelly called this show an 'eloquent masterpiece'....that's an understatement. Haunting, funny, smart, sad, and brilliant. BRAVO!
This musical changed my life. Bill Finn. Gooooood stuff.
