Merck created MDMA on Christmas eve 1913 in Germany. The U.S. Army resynthesized it in the 1950's.

Shulgin created many other awesome things though.

He said it was exactly the same as mescaline, yet he synthesized it, it wasn't naturally occuring. Could this be the reason that he tore apart the flower?

Shulgin Did not Invent Ecstacy (MDMA). If anything he re-synthesized it and made its recreational use popular. MDMA was developed in Germany in 1912.

perhaps the world would be a different place if, instead of Shulgin, it had been Pfizer. In the long run, though, it 's probably better that the drug companies didn't get their shot at monopolizing psychedelics.

I am suspicious, though, about his subjective descriptions about effects, and the differences between one and another, based on a single person's experience.

Still, appreciate what the man has done.

@torpex808 He did nothing to encourage the recreational use of MDMA. He touted its use in psychotherapy. He was annoyed and dismayed by its recreational use.
