From what I've read Julian wrote Is This It pretty much on his own, he's a bit of a perfectionist and would bring finished products to the band. He would even fix up/change the bands contributions because he would obsess over getting things right.
I think First Impressions was the album with the most band imput- so far- that's when Julian really opened up and gave the other guys a chance. That's probably why it sounded so different.

this song was definitely the highlight for me when I went to a show of theirs two years ago. So much energy!!! Julian was so f'ed up haha, he tried to say something to the crowd at one point and it made absolutely no sense and even he realized it and just kind of laughed and stared off into space.
everyone was so tired...the whole band (and even the public) was sleeping on feet..but then nick woke eveyone up with this AMAZING solo...so great..the strokes is the best band in the world, do doubt of it

i have. ive been to a couple shows. own all their shit on vinyl. I appreciate their music and know what it sounds like at its best, i just dont ever hold it to a standard ya know? What if he is not drunk and is just havin a bad day or somethin, or he has indigestion. excited for a new record, and i am definitely holding no standards for thaat either, because i have faithin the band and their musicianship. they changed my effin life

hah i highly doubt its indegestion. and julian casablancas has standards- hes said it himself, hes known to be a prefectionist. if the strokes didnt have standards where do you think they would be? they work hard to put out the great records that they do, and they havent dissapointed me yet-and i have pretty high standards.
the strokes=best band ever :)
