lol what a fail. This isn't a violin + guitar duo. It's a viola + guitar duo. The viola is way too deep to be a violin. Plus she has to shift on the A string in order to play notes on the E string for a violin. If it was a violin, she wouldn't do that unless she had a lot of open E's that she wanted to play with vibrato (which isn't the case). It's just she plays it so beautifully that makes it sound like it might be av violin, but it's a viola.

P.S. when I say it was a fail, I don't mean their playing, that's beautiful. I mean the people who thought it was a violin.

Actually, the instrument she's using IS a violin. Some of the notes she hits in 1st position are too high to be on a viola (e.g. the first note). Also, note how she never goes below a low G. The violin isn't just limited to the high notes, as the difference between the two is only one string. The "deep" sound you're hearing is probably because the violin itself or perhaps the strings have a deep tone quality, and the shifting on the A string is for the "mellow" tone quality the A string has.

Another thing to note, some of the notes are too high to hit on a viola, period (such as the note she slides up to at the beginning). And also, lots of violinists prefer the "deep" tone quality for certain songs. And also, she doesn't have a C string (the defining feature of the viola). Being a violinist for almost my entire life, I get the sudden urge to clear up all the violin-viola misunderstandings I happen to see. I hope this clears things up :)

I know this is kind of kicking the dead horse (as well as necroposting, I'm sorry), but I wanted to clear something else up: violinists will tend to play E string notes on the A string if they want to avoid the "shrill" sound of the E string in favor of the more mellow tone quality the A string possesses.
