  • I use a Toshiba NB250 with the Intel Atom N455 at 1.6Ghz 2GB of ram, 320GB Hd, with XP, can edit Hd videos fine, run firefox, and can play youtube video in 720p. Amd released the AMD C-50, which is a Dual core processor, and has the HD6250, sounds like a great little netbook, and would obviously blow away the N455, but still netbooks are great for lots of things. Windows 7 Starter how ever is not so good, I changed mine to 7 Home Basic which is better then 7 Starter

  • despite the video I uploaded saying netbooks suck, he has a point. The purpose of the video I made was to show people that laptops are used for gaming, and video editing and things that take a lot of processing power. Everyone who says that netbooks are great are only saying that because they are on a budget. Do you really think that people would buy netbooks if they could easily afford full scale laptops? NO. Netbooks are good if you are on a budget. Other wise theres no point.

  • Ubuntu for your netbook. Just use desktop edition. Then, if you install GIMP, you can push pixels out of place.

  • what about for school? i have a 17'' laptop and its almost impossible to take around places. would a netbook be good for like school work, since its small and portable and can perform MS Office, excel, ect?

  • iv got an nc10, things which i did on it, confused me, as it was said that i wouldnt be able to do more than half of the things iv done on it. Halo, was said that it shouldnt run, runs fine, VPC runs brilliantly, comes in handy when i want to use a VHD for extra storage space

as you said you can already run HD in it, well, it runs HD MPEG4 files litrally fine

the battery life, 6-7 hours, my new laptop iv got now, 2 hours at most

    @mobilephones2003

i agree with you in eveery aspect

  • u are right i think that netbooks arent the best but the the new windows 7 is definietly better than the mac i think but netbooks are third macs are 2nd and 1st is windows 7 laptops and desktops

  • There are not underpowered there OVERPOWERED.

    One exploded on me

  • I think that netbooks are great for their purpose, they will never be gaming machines, but they are great for Twitter and Facebook and such and they are light with good batteries which makes them perfect for the more novice of users.

  • We are called lupus foundation we are trying to

raise money and are doing fund raising for less fortunate who can not afford

the treatment they need . please we ask only small donation all helps.Even 5 cent is okay

jus something is all we ask. There is paypal charity account . this is the paypal account. .chesaustin@yahoo.com please bless some one today. :) thank you

  • one of those VAIO's are proper desktops in a netbook's shell

  • i have an Acer Aspire A110, it is quite a powerful little machine. i can have Adobe Photoshop CS4, Google Sketchup Pro and Blender running at the same time

  • I own the Acer aspire A110, harddrive model and it's dual booted with XP and backtrack (i use it for network monitoring) and it's great!

The only down size is the screen, sure it doesn't live upto the 3 monitors hooked upto my desktop, but that's what the VGA port is for.

  • I now have Photoshop 7.0 with Google Earth and they work like on my desktop.

  • Comment removed

  • Netbook's are like you said, fully capable of being a good machine. For Christmas I really wanted a laptop/netbook and the first thing we looked at was the netbooks. They are cheap ($300) and light weight, but they dont have a dvd drive. But that's OK if you have a thumbdrive and a way to move the files to it. Also you could help increase the performance by getting a 2Gb stick of ram. I think this guy has no idea what he is talking about. btw, i got a laptop :)

  • I can run Photoshop 5.0 with no problems on mine and firefox loads in 3 seconds.

  • i used my hp mini 2133 1st gen for my photoshop course at school and it worked fine

  • I really want to get one now ! but i don't think it could run crysis :P i have a gaming comp for that hehe.

  • me too, on aspire one

  • Netbooks arent made for running high end programs they're made for mobility and there like 200 dallors a netbook its werth what you pay for it.

  • @InnovationJunkie I could not agree with you more - netbooks are perfect for a little light browsing on the train or for doing some Office work if you had to. That's why they're so cheap. Otherwise, they'd be the same price as a laptop.

  • Why do people always compare netbooks to other classes of computers?.. netbooks are designed for web usage and mobility. there perfect for just that, and office programmes. they are not made for gaming or video editing or such people seem to forget this. and get pissed when they cant do it. i use my netbook full time, its replaced my quad core desktop it handles everything i throw at it fine.

  • the return of the thin white duke

  • my dad got me an accer aspire

its pretty shitty, i dont know why he got it. i dont need a small computer, i want a functional computer.

  • it is horses for courses , and you get what you pay for...nuff said :)

  • They call them NETbooks for a reason /: I'm using my acer aspire one KAV10 right now - I upgraded it to 2GB, and its very nice.

  • "Not capable of running a desktop Operating System". Right. So my old desktop computer downstairs is magically better at running XP than my netbook which is more powerful than the desktop?

  • yoh dude i really like your videos, one of the rare youtubers i can sit through ten minutes of screencap with haha.

as a pc gamer, i cant stand net books, the screens are tiny, theres no dvd drive and theyre really slow

i see why hipsters who want to tweet while in starbucks want them, but nobody really likes them

id rather spend 200 quid on new graphics or something :)

  • again its like he said its all about what you are using it for. it all depends on what you do.

  • I have a HP netbook, running win7 ultimate, office 2010 etc etc it does all of that very well. Youtube is fine, itunes is fine anyone who has a problem with a netbook probably bought a crappy netbook.

  • why would they even invent the netbook of they didnt even perform well?

wow youtube spell check says netbook and youtube are spelled wrong :-)

  • Firefox, dumbass.

    And dumbass isn't recognized either.

  • Wow and you have to make such a big deal out of a spell check.

  • Yes.

  • Agree with you there mobilephone. My netbook has no problem on youtube, and i find it incredibly userful. I have a laptop I have to carry around with me for work, but I can't really use it for personal things. Thus it is easy to slip the netbook into my bag wherever I'm going, and it does just about everything I need it to do, which is update blogs, facebook, etc, and do a bit of drupal coding. They are what they are. XP is about 8 years old, and netbooks are faster than machines back then.

  • Buying a netbook is invested in an underpowered paperweight. I have a mid-entry laptop and even I think it's underpowered.

People who purchase netbooks clearly have not tried products available that cost 100-200 more and offer acceptable performance. I wouldn't buy a netbook if my life depended on it.

  • 100-200 more = another netbook, so 2 netbooks = low end laptop.

  • @mobilephone2003 Just get something small that has the Core i3.

  • He should try the Acer Aspire 1410, with the Centrino core. It may not be counted as a netbook, but it's an inch bigger than one. It's at least 30x faster than the Aspire One.

  • Keep up the good work mobilephone...if someone blasts netbooks in general then they are obviously missing the point of them.

  • pff netbooks aren't bad at all. I don't use them but I started university now and I see more and more people with netbooks. If you ask me it's better than a macbook, it's just used for the basic stuff, and it does what its supposed to do very well.

  • What u doing, You always argu with people views. STOP!

  • Netbooks are pretty capable, just not as much as a desktop PC or a full size Laptop.

  • this guy really likes to start a lot of beef with people!!!!!!

  • merely correcting people with facts.

  • i understand that, but you go pretty far as looking for data from various sources

  • I'm a blogger myself and an owner of the Samsung N310 (non-3G model) and can simply say the guy who wrote that article is a prime example of ignorant consumers who just expect everything to be perfect. Netbooks are excellent, I'm running Win7 on it and although I will be upgrading to 2GB, it runs perfectly even when using large programs. Only issue is HD youtube, but you mentioned why that is.

  • Netbooks are primarily used for convenience. I bought a netbook as opposed to a laptop was simply because the N310 is insanely light and portable. I use it when checking my emails in the morning in bed, surfing the web when watching TV on the sofa and even viewing recipes when in the kitchen. This guy is definitely not a tech blogger, if he was he would have got the connection between WebOS's and netbooks.

  • With cloud-computing coming soon with the convergence of web2, we won't have a need for generic operating systems. Everything will become available online, from office software to even accessing your desktop and running it as a virtual machine. It's insane to think netbooks are worthless. If you study the trends in technology and compare it with the Moore's law theory, then you will begin to notice that computing power will no longer be limited to size.

  • While cloud computing has legitimate uses, No cloud computing for me. Theres no way to have certainty who has access to an individuals data.

  • * I might add, the ONLY negative for having netbooks are that they unfortunately use low powered WIFI adapters and in most cases you will find that the signal strength won't be the same to a laptop. (My mobile phone's WIFI runs faster) My N310 uses Atheros AR5007EG and it has the problem of always dropping out due to low signal. It's extremely hard to download drivers for it. So that is the only downside, because of the low power output of the processing chip, they use low quality adapters.

  • I agree with you, I have used a friends netbook in the past. He had the Hard Drive packed to the brim, and I could do everything just FINE.

  • If you plan to game, then frigging get a gaming computer. Don't be a cheapass.

I've got the Acer that he mentions... it's awesome for everything that I do.

I have a main PC that I do more of my heavier work on, (photo editting, gaming, etc) but this laptop is just AWESOME for taking notes in class and doing document on the go.

Watching videos and browsing web is awesome as well... my iPhone gets sorta hard to use after 30 minutes of continous browsing.

  • phones and laptops are merging....im sure one day we'll get the power of full scale laptops as small as a phone. The keyboard might also fold out with the monitor size as a variable rather than fixed.....

  • atom is perfectly fine for light work just like Duncan says. apart from a small design flaw on my netbook i love it to bits. How would i describe it? "Really Handy!".

  • My Samsung N120 netbook is great, lightweight and has a long 5-8hr battery, its 10 inch screen can be used for hours without eye strain, easily big enough.

I upgraded from 1-2GB RAM, a slight performance boost but obviously its still working with the atom processor.

Its16:9(ish) screen screen frames movies nicely. 720p video runs OK most of the time but it does struggle with higher bitrate files, unsurprisingly.

To be honest though with a 10" screen 624x352 is easily enough, and runs smoother.

  • acer aspire 110 with xubuntu is quick. No antivirus. No malware. Youtube frame rate good.

  • I also agree, that's the first article i read on the website too :)

  • fuck atom processors hate them but yeah netbooks are usefull

  • netbooks rock. mine has plenty of power for my needs.

my bigger laptop has gone in the draw since i got my netbook!!

  • jon4lakers =) i wonder how will he respond .. if he responds....

  • I 110% agree!

  • That writer seems a little dramatic. Reminds me of MG Siegler too much.

    *shudder*

  • my dad found one for only $150 on the

    upcoming black friday

=D should i get it or should i put more facts up about it?

  • It depends upon what your uses are & this guys vid explains netbooks accurately.

  • Comment removed

  • 7:07 - Indeed. I'm a developer and Visual Studio 2008 runs fine on it, however I have to adapt the environment's elements to pop in and pop out in a way that allows for optimal development (e.g. the code window size). Works fine though, no problems at all so far!

So what's up with this guy anyway, sounds like he's seen a picture of it and goes "hey, this thing's tiny, it fits in my pocket, that probably can't do much, let's rant a bit about it!" ......Huh?

  • Okay correction; doesn't really fit in the pocket. But you get the idea hopefully.

  • @thojoh370

i miss-read your comment, disregard my last one.

Although these netbooks fail in the gaming area.

  • Yeah. But I play DOS games on mine - which is a Compaq Mini 700 - such as Commander Keen. And sometimes classics is all I need...

  • I'll be good with my pandora ;)

  • I use my netbook practically everyday in lectures and such, and it does everything I need and more. It even plays quake3 with 60fps :P

  • Ignore him, he clearly doesn't know what he's talking about.

  • that guy was insane !!! laptops are awsome !!! there are some of them taht can play the newest games !!! and i saw a toshiba satelite with 4 GB of ram a nividia GEForce grafics card a 500 GB hdd and it was verry verry awsome i tested it at one of my friends and is work*s like new he installed xp on it and it*s moving lika a desktop or even better !!! cheers !!! :D:P:D:P:D

  • Netbooks are not laptops technically.

  • HUGH!??!?!?! i cant believe jon4lakers would say that

  • jon4lakers didnt say that

  • netbooks arent made to be a main, powerful machine. I got mine so if im far from my house i can open up whatever i want from my hp mini, give it 2 gigs of ram and you could do anything thats not crazy, office apps, flash video, even a couple games

  • I run Windows 7 Ultimate on my NB100, and it's BRILLIANT! 10000000000x better than XP was!

  • jon4lakers ;-P

  • i installed windows 7 on my little bro's acer aspire one and his is pretty decent!

  • my aspire one can run grand theft auto san andeas

  • NC10 with windows 7 ultimate works like a charm! I agree with you completely. A biased a under researched article

  • Having said that, I have been able to play The Sims 2 plus 2 or 3 expansions on my netbook, which surprised me, I didn't think it'd work so well.

  • I've got an MSI Windows XP netbook with 1GB Ram and 120GB HD, and I love it. It's not top of the range, but all I was looking for was a cheap lightweight netbook to do browsing, play music and catch up on writing my assignments while commuting to uni. It's able to play YouTube HQ videos fine and loads applications quickly. It would be short-sighted to think netbooks do EVERYTHING a desktop or even a laptop does, but it's pretty darn good if you're not going to be using process-heavy apps.

  • xD i just bought a macbook pro and im plannng to buy a netbook or a cheap laptop for the sole purpose of windows live messenger xD lol and another one dedicated to nothing but to upload my pictures to

  • They aren't meant for extreme gaming in the first place. After all, they are called NETbooks

  • Of course they are - but until the battery and cooling technology catches up (and drops to a reasonable price), this wont change.

  • You said in the video XP can run on 256 MB of RAM? I've had it running on 200 mhz CPU with 96MB of RAM, pretty decent speed (old laptop). The original OS was Windows 95, which was upgraded to ME, then I wiped it and put XP on it, and it ran pretty much the same.

As for the article, he's just really over exaggerating. To me, it sounds like he got one, something went wrong, and now he's calling the whole thing a broken paper weight.

  • that guys an arrogant idiot! Netbooks are really useful for people who don't need the power as not much power is needed for office application and browsing the web (kinda shows by the name NETbook). also less power means better battery life, cheaper price so is better for travellers etc.

  • I have the basic Acer Aspire, with only 512 ram, and its perfect for what I need, writing essays, checking the web, email etc. I also watch films etc via usb pen. My son uses it for the web and chatting to his friends. I am going to open it up and install more ram, but will still use it for simple tasks. I have a 17" Dell laptop for more powerful programmes.

  • thats just his opinion, leave him alone :(

  • Herr I'm running win 7 on a Netbooks at this time kool its running good so fur .

  • Agreed. I've been running Windows 7 on my Dell Mini 10v for a while now, and I've have no problems at all.

  • until net books come stock with i7's. ill just avoid them until then

  • they wont be able to handle windows 7 anytime soon.

  • why di usay that...? i got an acer aspite one im using it right now to post this comment... ;p

  • Ha my laptop takes about 2 minutes to load FireFox.

  • lol my old computer took like 20 min to start up and about 5 min to load a program but on my laptop it starts up in about 1 min and loads a program in about 20 sec :P

  • mine to (sometimes) thats why i go on the computer

  • i have an AMD dual core 2.5 ghz 4850e processor and 2 GB of ram

outlook 07 opens in less than 15 secs

    Firefox opens in under 10

  • i am a web page desginger and i run Web expresaions and build pages on it. it runs wonderfule res can be a issue but it is a miner. NEt books rocks i have a acer Aspire one

  • haha! some one trying to write a 30 min blog post on an iphone ... now that would make a good video ... netbook WIN

  • I've owned an ASUS EEE 901 for a year, and I wholeheartedly disagree with that article. Yes, you can't do some things like gaming, but otherwise, it's good at everything else. Unless you aren't informed enough, you should be knowing exactly what you are buying, no trickery involved. And netbooks ARE indeed popular. Like Duncan said, Windows 7 has one for netbooks, Ubuntu has the netbook remix, etc.

All in all, mine is great for what I do. Use it for what it's intended, and it works.

  • Id never get a netbook just because it cannot do what I like computers to do. Even my laptop dual core isn't good enough thb.

  • i love netbooks, they're good for stock market trading, checkin email, ms office 2007 document creation, ..... seems like techno buffalo is biased with certain reviewers

  • I agree with you, its called a NETbook, they're made for surfing the web and making it portable, not photoshopping and having 20 windows open at once...

  • I have dell inspiron 1520 which works very well, and new games work well too. it cost me about £800

  • I think, for many people, netbooks are very useful. People have to know what their getting into and ensure they're part of the demographic before spending the cash.

    Regards,

    Tom

  • i have a sony vaio netbook, it's 2 years old and it runs vista. it loads firefox in 4 seconds and it can run oblivion on low settings.

  • he has an opinion different than yours

  • some ppl just like to talk crap lol i am on a acer aspire a0751h and its as of right now takin over my desktop that crashed so its fine. quick with what it does slow when running zune and ituns but i gat an mp3 player for music so im i dont mind. chears all!

  • dont get me wrong here.i said netbooks suck from my point of view of a gamer.they arent made for gaming except for gaming laptop but they work great overall.

  • lol i totally agree with this dude.netbooks sucks.but i know it works great for someone in the business career.

  • I agree that if he is going to criticize them, he needs to have at least owned as many as you have.

  • It's funny how Duncan can't think of a steady name :) He changed the name of this A LOT of times already :)

  • I can watch HD on my EEE 1002HA. Just run Ubuntu and playback via Xine. You can also watch YouTube in HD 22 (as far as I know, highest supported resolution by YouTube). Just install the GreaseMonkey script that replaces the Flash player with embedded Totem (native player on Linux system) and off you go. Works like a charm.

That being said, it doesn't really make much sense to do so. Even 720p (1280x720) is way more than your display can actually reproduce, regardless of the graphics card.

  • The only reason i don't use laptops or netbooks is because i'm a gamer and i really don't travel or anything.

  • totally rubbish. I have a laptop with 192mb of ram and windows xp. sure it is using the classic theme, and I have turned off all startup items and modded the registry but it is a decent machine.

  • I just want to facepalm at that, he obviously doesnt know a clue about them.

  • Im Sure this guy just has some serous issues of Virus/ spy ware on his net book

  • Netbook, clue is in the title.

  • I agree, I'd even go as far as that for laptops. If you're not doing work on them, get a desktop...

  • I hate TechnoBuffalo

  • i dont have anything against the site, just the article. I'm sure its a good techology site.

  • Well thats the first time i see you comment on your own video :)

  • I usually do for like the first couple of hours, then i leave people to fight amongst themselves

  • Honestly I hate the whole site. :/ But whatever.

  • Hell, I read this. And I really don't get wtf his problem is. I've had my Acer Aspire One since Christmas of '08. Great little machine! I took a chance and installed Vista Home Premium over XP, and surprisingly run's very, very well! And I'm a moderate user, I run about 9 IRC bot's on mIRC 24/7, have Chrome/Firefox open, YouTube, iTunes, IM, Antivirus, etc... This computer has yet to slow down. Hell, I've even used dreamweaver on this little sucker, along with Gimp. Not sure about photoshop tho.

  • 128 MB RAM for XP as a recommended requirement.

  • Perhaps the guy didn't know what's the purpose of netbooks and he wants netbooks perform like Alienware laptops. Netbooks is not a gaming laptop but a small laptop for casual use such as MP3's or Facebooking.

  • There are some UI problems with TechnoBuffalo as well. E.G. When you zoom out, the menu bar becomes fucked up!

  • I read that article from TechnoBuffalo and I thought it was completely retarded. Why would you think a netbook would be powerful? Speaking of TechnoBuffalo, the sign up process is horrible, why the hell can't you choose your own password? It is insane!

  • What screen resolution did you record this video and what is the dimension you render this video out? Please reply. Thanks

  • 1280x720 to both questions.

  • I entirely agree with your views on netbooks having used Acer A110 and A150 and Sammy NC10 all with 1GB Ram and Win XP... Collecting emails via Outlook Express, viewing NON HD YTube vids, Skype in Fullscreen Video mode, Spotify, Facebook, Twitter, Firefox, Office Org...They all run OK..

btw thanks for your tutorials HOW2 Flash install XP after removal of Linux OS :)

    Cheers,

    James

  • I have the AAO A150 with 512RAM 120HDD running linpus lite, and I bought it to bring into uni just to write stuff up on going on the net etc and it does all those basic things perfectly. I can watch youtube videos, go on bbc iplayer, run spotify. I've had it over a year and don't have any real complaints about it.

  • BTW, I also have a 2yr Old Dell 1500series Laptop for my other uses while I travel all over the U.S.

  • Duncan, I've just bought an Asus Eee PC 12" with the 1g ram and the 160gig HDD. And frankly I find that this is fine for many of my uses. I frequently watch torrents on it and enjoy a bit of writing as well. Obviously this is not a SUPER-Gaming system nor for running huge CAD/Engineering programs that suck up the memory. I can do lots of file transfers and use Firefox exclusively as well. I even contemplating running Snow Leopard on it. It's still worth the price @ $349.99 USD.

  • lol Duncan... thank you for this video... I have a critique to do for my Advanced Academic Writing class... you've just enlightened me... now I know how to spot refutable arguments :P

  • I can see the appeal of netbooks, but I really find it awkward to type on them. That spoils the experience for me really.

  • great vid mate!! =D

  • Pure confusion over function. I'm a journalist and this is one sided, bad press.

  • hi i have a acer aspire one but it has deveolped a problen. now it runs its start up and all that but then i am met with a black screen and nothing else accsept my mouse cursors.

    any idias thanks

  • I'm sorry but anything with under 4gb of RAM is fail. Anything with under a dual core 2.5 GHz is also pretty saddening. I don't blame someone if they want to use a netbook though. It's really up to what the consumer wants. If there is demand for them, they'll sell.

  • you just cant get that in a small device though

  • I know, however I've seen some ultra light notebooks with 13 inch displays that have 1.8Ghz dual core processors. With 2GB of ram and decent integrated graphics. At least that isn't going to struggle with youtube videos. On windows 7 ust running vlc, windows live messenger and firefox I'm using 1.28GB RAM. In my opinion 2GB isn't enough but at least it's tolerable.

  • thats a my cock is much bigger than yours statement! So XP with 2GB RAM would fail?

  • Well XP is 8 years old now, you should move on. Besides, if you've never used more than 2gb of RAM on your home computr running xp i'd be surprised.

  • didnt say i was using XP just that XP with 2GB RAM would, by no means, fail. The reason i use XP as an example is that most netbook users install XP

  • Does that change the fact a 1.6 GHz single core is going to suck on XP?

  • XP is a good Windows OS for 1.6 GHz single core netbooks at the mo. And seeing that Windows is a familiar OS it seems like a very good choice . Netbooks have more than the lowest system requirements for XP. I just dont see why you would watch a vid on netbooks and then say anything with less than 4GB RAM sucks? It's a netbook!!!!

  • Try running Windows XP on a 133MHz Pentium I. Its XP's minimum requirement.

  • Yeah try running antivirus with that type of processor moron.

  • I have never owned a Netbook but i have tried a few and really they are fucking Awesome the guy over at Techno Buffalo knows nothing about them and most likely did that to make people not buy them WTF Net books For the WIN!!!!

  • Is there any difference between a laptop and a netbook?

  • yes

  • LOL

"this dude has some serious vendetta against netbooks"

    I don't know why I found that funny :P

  • video is not having quality

  • let it process, please grow a brain

  • noob shut up, everyone doesnt know youtube

  • meh netbooks suck

  • yeah

  • o_o
