  • The part at 0:31 always gets me. It's so impressive when Diana sings "Ich halte Wort"!

  • While I do think that Diana is perfect for the role of the Queen of the Night, I'd also like to point out that Adrian Thompson did a wonderful job with Monostatos!! Fabulous production!

  • Ew, don't let your daughter marry that weirdo!

Haha. This is such a great production!

    She's such an amazing singer.

  • I LOVE THIS *.*

  • this final is so beautiful i great i like it

  • Best costumes. Ever.

  • I hate cheesy metaphors and similes, but Dianas voice is actually crystalline in tone. It has that natural, reverberating ring about it. The acting and costumes in this particular production are also very appropriate, too. The Salzberg production with the 'broccoli' outfit is too abstract and surreal for a Classical opera.

  • Amazing!

  • the kids are sooooo cute in the whole production!! especially in the scene when tamino finds out that pamina is alive, in the temple. and the papageni duet? lol!!!!!

  • kids at 4:25 , "We're not allowed to sing :("

  • I LOOOVE IIIITT

  • Pena o som ser tão " Baixo "

  • i was sorting out my videos, and on a half ripped label i could see whot was on the tape-though cracked and flikering i found this-when i taped it i stood in silence as beauty surronded me for the first time-That day- one has never forgot as i will never forget this production-Bravo to all who can bring such grace to us all-THANKYOU.

  • I hate Sarastro!!! The only good thing is that the Queen survived anyway in the end, so I guess this is not completely over yet for her!!

  • In an interview she is a gigly blond young woman, on stage female evil..

  • Can we talk for a second about how perfectly tuned "grossige Konigin der Nacht" is? <3.

  • The ending is so wierd, but it sure is beutifull!

  • @rayschalch Read the info box

  • I love this. Damrau looks like pure zany evil as the Queen of the Night. A unique, personalized and unforgettable performance.

  • saw this production. covent garden, london march 2005. it was both terrifying and beautiful. had me laughing and crying in equal measures. stunning.

  • The three women are the furies from greek mythology?

  • <--Brought to tears.

  • i wish diana came to finland to perform this aria

  • Brilliant.

  • She is very talented.

  • OMG!!!

    perfect

  • Ahh I have goosebumps :P

  • This is just amazing!

  • where can I buy the DVD?

  • I don't know about Turkey stores, but you sure can get it on amazon :)

  • @Lilith89ibz

i am japanese but im going to buy this from amazon :)

i wanna watch it asap :-)

  • on Diana web site there's a link how you can buy this version, I bought it

  • @AlbAlPasa try ebay:-)

  • Er, and by Italian, I mean German. Oops.

  • Does anyone have a source for the italian lyrics for Nur Stille, Stille? Haven't had much luck with googling.

  • I'll try to find them for you :)

  • Got them :) I'll send the link to you in a message.

  • Many thanks Lilith. You're the best!

  • <3<3<3

  • Monostatos is great here too. :) If I were a professional tenor, I would have played him in Die Zoberflote

  • Danrau just fascinating, this centurie`s queen of the night

  • I wish youtube had a repeat button...

  • with all respects to the star of the stage, D.D. i just have to say that Adrian Thompson did an amazing job in this production, the best monostatos i have ever heard

  • What makes Damrau's performance so absolutely spot on is that she ACTS the part as well as sings it. She was born just before my own career as a coloratura was ending and when I first heard her at 18 in Germany, I said, at the time, that when her voice matured I believed that she would take her place as one of the finest lyrical coloratura's to ever grace a stage. I was right. You can train a singer in the notes. Everything else comes from the heart and soul. Damrau is the best...

  • I Wish it was Luke19Wales, I am writing to Santa to ask for it.

  • so dramatic! i love it :P i wonder if the whole opera is on youtube?

  • No, it's not. Fortunately. Buy the DVD!

  • annoying :P ill ask father christmas lol

  • That's a great idea :D

  • i hate Sarastro and the englithed ones so much.

    Die Königin der Nacht rules!!!!

  • stunning, no words may even begin...........!

  • we all know that we're watching a magnificent masterpiece what else is there to talk about. Astounding applause to Damrau

  • Damrau is amazing.. She does such a good job that I don't think I can see any other versions made up-to-now. She satisfies both with her singign and her acting soo flawlessly and soo perfectly!. Superb!.

  • @dncroy

    She is excellent.

  • Why do ballets and operas have such huge casts? How do they afford it?

    It's awesome..

  • Ever been to the opera? Well, tickets are expensive xD Anyway, they get financed by rich people who love opera, mainly.

  • That is probably the best zauberflöte ever!!! So great performed and amazing scenario

  • Yes! "to you mighty queen of the night" is sung without vibrato for once. Very neccesary, and it makes a big difference

  • Damrau and Dessay give the proof that a character can have infinite ways of interpretation, even two opposites. (Watch Dessay as the queen in 1994!).

  • i prefer damrau

  • I agree with DoryViolet. Dessay in 1994 is absolutely sublime. She is regal and refined, whereas Damrau is powerful and dramatic. I love them both!

  • Monostatos's costume is sooo cool.

I want to wear it all the time.

  • I totally agree!! for me this is the best performance ever!!! no matter what you can say... the costumes are awesome, the singers are really into the characters, and the orchestra is really accurate!!! THANX FOR POSTING!!!

  • 1:18 is so nice!

and Diana Damrau owns the stage even when she isn't tossing of F6! :)

  • I love the portion from 1:18 to 1:36! That's amazing.

  • Hey could you upload the aria "Dies bildnis ist bezauberndt schon"

I'm curious about that aria and Will Hartmann's singing. Would it be too much to ask you to keep the subtitles?

  • Oh, believe me, you don't want to know what Hartmann did to that aria xDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

Ok, real reason is my file got lost when my hard drive died. Anyway, I can ask a friend to upload it, let's see if I remember :)

  • The Queen still represents night. I think she just lost her evil power that's it. But flute is stull with Tamino. I think there should be a continuation of the opera where Queen does something bad through the flute ))

  • i just want to take this time to be immature and say...that can be taken is SOOO many wrong ways lol.

  • Giusto ciel, you dirty minded Händel fan xDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAH :D

  • omg im doing this play in school and im the queen of the night and its today and im really mad because people are telling me im doing really bad ahhhh what do i do

  • Once again, A fantastic performance by Diana Damrau, and great harmonic singing by the queen's servants too!

  • does anyone know if this particular version of this opera is on sale (like amazon)??? it would be a fantastic present for my teacher

  • Yeah, of course it is :) You can get it like everywhere around Europe. I don't know about the States, but sure it's on amazon! You should get another copy for yourself, though ;-)

  • i absolut love this version, every one in it is perfect!!!!!

  • Darn....I really wanted the queen to win......why does it always have to be the good people?? lol

  • Oh, but she IS the good people! xDDDD One day I'll have to prove that to the world, hm...

  • @flouraki Austrians simply do not know how to end badly.

  • @flouraki I feel you... I wanted damrau to win..... damn...

  • "to you, mighty Queen of the Night", adoro esa parte :)

  • I doubt Sorastro's theology knows of sunspots.

  • So, The Queen of the Night was the true villain the whole time? Wow, I thought that Sarastro was the bad-guy.... Anywho! It's pretty neat how both Night and Day are fighting over power. I guess one might say that's how it really is? I wonder if the Queen of the Night will be back to fight again? (I know it's not going to happen, but a sequel would be neat.)

  • Yup. The queen made out at the beginning that Sarastro was bad because he was keeping Pamina from her, but that was for her own good so she wouldn't be manipulated. And the queen wanted Tamino to join her and also get Pamina back to strengthen the alliance.

  • Was that Monostatos at the very beginning?

  • Yes, it was him :)

  • thanks. I thought so. He is absolutely awesome.

  • Why are they saying that their power is destroyed and that they're plunged into everlasting night? I thought that was a good thing.

  • Errr... Well. If you are the Queen of the Night and you want to take over Sarastro's powers over the day and the sun and stuff, being plunged into the darkness is not a good thing. At all LOL

  • that was a beautiful ending.

  • quickly, name another opera singer who can catch the knife from the floor like she does...

  • I'm afraid that's just her xDDDD

  • I kept paralized, her elasticity is fantastic. Once I watched another performance of her, and in it, she opens widely her legs in spagat.

Diana, I admire you, your voice is not the unique amazing thing on you:

    Your voice

    Your beauty

    and your physical state

    She is just Diana Damrau

  • bad subs... just badly translated

  • Yeah, I know, but I couldn't erase them. Sorry about that.

  • OMG, I loved seeing this, besides just her awesome performance! Beautiful chorus, exceptional chorus, this is perfection!

  • I must say that I agree. I believe the only flaw in this production, to my full regret, is Sarastro not being played by kurt moll. Pretty much every other character is perfect, specially the great damrau as queen of the night.

Not that I don't like Franz-Josef Selig. I think he does a pretty nice job. But Kurt Moll... No words.

  • Maybe it's just because I saw it before this but I think the '91 production at the met is quite a bit better, for a number of reasons. But mostly because Kurt Moll is basically the best bass ever and dominates sorastro

  • Why was the power of the Queen of the night destroyed? I just don't get it...

But I know Mozart tried to mean it the victory of the masonic lodges over the Catholic church

  • well... in the end Sarastro wins. and don't forget he is the one who says that women should be led by men...

  • There is a loooooooot behind that xD

  • i know i should really like the good guy. be he comes across way to pretentious. he seems like a wannabe know-it-all!

  • I hate Sarastro xD He is not the good guy at all. First important fact: how i the opera called? Aha, so who gives the magic flute to Tamino? AHA! xDDDDDDD

There is way more to it than one would think at first :)

  • You're so right!!! xD

I was lying in bed one evening with the "hm hm hm" song from the opera in my head. and then the first lady says: "the queen sends you this magic flute!" And i though to myself: OMG!!! now the opera makes less sense to me. but sarstro says: "it destroys the evil power of hypocrites". maybe the Queen of the Night is a hypocrite if she gives tamino a flute that in the end leads to her downfall... xDDDDD

  • I think there should be "evil" continuation cause magic flute is still rests with Tamino )) and I presume the Queen can through the flute do something )))) ahahahahah!!! I dont know why but I like the evil side always...

  • I saw this production twice.

    Simply outstanding!

  • When watching this I must confess I was rooting for the queen. I kept shouting to Damrau "Kill him kill him...he's not knife proof..come on..you didn't sing thoes five top F's for nothing!"

  • Hahahaha Yeah, well, I told Diana that everybody expected the Queen to kill Sarastro, but she says the Queen knows when she has lost and when to retire elegantly. She also told me her Queen always came back... Muahahaha! xDDDDDDDDD

  • I would like to add one last scene. Before the happy chorus ends, I would have the Queen return singing Helen Reddy's "I am woman", slap some since into her co-dendendant daughter, have the misogynistic Sarastro arrested for the grand theft and kidnaping, finally and send another snake after Tamino, which he can fight for himself this time!

Don't mess with a woman who can sing five top F's in alt!

Any ideas of Diana will/has recorded Popoli di Tessaglia (k 316)?

  • HAHAHAHAHA I hope she reads this comment! xDDDD

She hasn't recorded the Popoli and she won't. I asked her about it and in her opinion (which I share) it's boring (except for, maybe the last 30 seconds xD). Anyway, I'd rather she sung Violetta instead! ^^

  • could u upload Franz Josef Selig's sarastro? What do u think of it?

  • Well, the thing is I have uploaded nearly the whole DVD! And I hate the character. And Selig's boring, anyway. I'm sorry, but I don't think I'll upload it. Buying the DVD is really worth it :)

  • oh haha so he's no Moll huh? alright, thanks anyway.

  • That's exactly my point xD I'm sorry :P

  • Yeah I think Kurt Moll's much better because he has a rounder sound and he just sounds more like a Sarastro. :)

  • haha I thought Selig did pretty well. I was bored as hell by the guy who plays Tamino. Gaw, and the tenor who does Ascanio in "Ascanio in Alba"... it just annoys me unless it's a nice rich baritone like Keenlyside/Lucic/Mattei.

    flimsy tenors are ugh.

  • Yeah, Hartmann is not my favourite Tamino either xDDDDD

  • Yeah I thought that this Tamino did lots of scooping and excessive vibrato. I have yet to find a perfect Tamino ie the equivalent of Damrau.

  • In my opinion there is no male equivalent to Damrau.... ^^

If you want to find a better Tamino, (not perfect, just better) I advise you to check Topi Lehtipuu.

  • This is probably my favourite production of it ever!!! I just wish the director could have made the last climax a bit more dramatic rather than making poor Damrau do a "walk of shame" off the stage...

  • I think the last para of your description wasn't really necessary. We love Diana as she is.

  • Aw, but it is my favourite part! xD She's SO into the role! lol

  • I think the Queen of the Night would think that though - she had more important things on her mind, like raiding the temple.

  • Mhm, that's the idea ;)

  • the harmony is beautifull

  • Yeah this is one of the only productions where Monostatos really impresses me with his low C and B.

  • Diana Damrau ist einfach super!

  • where can i get this video? i love it!

  • Well, I don't know why but it is hard to get in Germany and Austria... In Spain you can get it everywhere. I think the fastest and easiest way is to buy the DVD on Amazon :)

  • These costumes are brilliant- wowza!

  • I saw the MET's version of Die Zauberflote last November. It was an awesome performance, but it had a very modern/cosmic/egyptian variation feel to it. I much rather perfer this style of production. I just love the costumes and dark Renaissance feel it has. And Damrau is quite flawless as the Queen. Damrau's costume at the MET's performance was very Queen Amidala in Star Wars-Phantom Menace. None the less LOVE DAMRAU!!

  • I saw that one to! I thought costumes were a little to crazy, especially the three boys with those long beards. Damrau was spectacular!

  • i just love the staging and the costumes and the actors and the coreography! It's the best production EVER!!! So cooooool

  • oh my god, thank you so much for this! once again ^^

  • Lilith...You again prove to the world that you are my hero.

    I love it !!!!!

  • Nah, I'm not. Diana is ;)

  • Maravillosoo! =D!

  • I don't really see the "oh shut up" in her eyes, I see madness!!! She looks like a woman on the edge...best version ever!!! Just listen to the harmonizing at the "der grosse konigen.." section- wonderful!!

  • That harmony is AMAZING! It almost sounds like church music...but it would be sacrilege.

  • Hahahaha! I read she said in an interview she had recorded the 'Der Hölle Rache' in a church and she was prying to God not to incerate her with a bolt of lightning! LOL!

  • Es ella católica? Como es de Bavaria...

  • Pues no estoy segura. Creyente sí.

  • it's because they're singing without vibrato.

  • Thank you for uploading the rest of the Finale. Sarastro sounded a bit cautious in the upper register. For example, the Bb on "die" and the middle C on "Heuchler" were sharp and sounded a bit labored, suggesting that he was working too hardly to produce the sound up there. The choir sang beautifully.

  • Well, he's not my favourite Sarastro. I find him quite boring, actually.

  • I agree. Great vid, Lili!

  • I agree!!

For me Kurt Moll was my favorite Saratro.

    You??

  • Kurt Moll too ^^

  • Laszlo Pólgar is my favorite. A great bass.

  • Simplemente impresionante!!
