This wasn't much of an answer to a "Why?" question, it was more of a "What toxins hurt dogs?". I'll tell you why so many toxins hurt dogs and not us. Dogs have had a meaty diet for millions of years, meat almost never contain toxins, especially a wolves diet. Natural selection has not played much of a role selecting for toxin tolerant genes. Humans on the other hand has had a very varied diet, mostly plants as apes, plants contains lots of toxins our body must handle, and we can handle them.
Through natural selection our genes has developed to create enzymes that quickly destroy toxins before they reach a high level. The toxin in chocolate for instance may also have effect on our body, but our enzymes destroy it quickly. In dogs the toxin can stay in their body for over 24 hours, don't give your dog chocolate every day it might build up to a dangerous level. In our body the toxin is destroyed quickly, our organs are also adapted to a toxic diet and can take a lot of punishment.
my dog eats oranges and apples and bannanas...and animal crackers, and potato chips, ans baby swiss cheese, and he likes to chew on ice....so almost everything lol
MY dog only eats Baloney, no joke.... i have to cut up baloney and give it to her 3 times a day. loool (And avocado, sometimes string salty cheese too)
thats because grapes cause kidney failure, so you wouldt see anything. But some dogs are just weird
Like mine for example, He got into EVERYTHING when he was a puppy. He ate an entire bag of m&ms and all of my earrings @_@ and 8 yrs later he's still perfectly fine -_-
lol i guess it doesnt matter cuz i fed him those things a long time ago...it never really affected him anyways. but i wud be scared if he wud go near the little kids with chocolate icecream or sumthing like that...ouch.
m&ms don't contain real chocolate but rather milk chocolate (sugar, milk, and a SMALL amount of chocolate). The reason you avoid giving these at all is because they'll develop a preference towards it, and one day you may have real chocolate around and the dog gets curious and BAM
1oz of milk chocolate per 1lb of body weight is considered a dangerous amount for dogs. So my 80lb lab would have to eat 5lbs of milk chocolate to have a toxic reaction. I think "real chocolate" (bakers chocolate or semi-sweet) is like 1oz per 9oz of body weight, but I'm not too sure.
But I used to feed an old dog grapes all he time. No health problems; lived to be 15.
At first, it didn't play for me either, so it's not just you. I don't know why this is, but try doing this:
Drag the clipmarker to around 1:30 or so and press the HQ button once so that the clip starts over. Then you can place it earlier at about 0:10 or so and watch from there. This worked for me so I hope it does for you too...
my dogs eat olives, figs, grapes from the garden for all of their lifes and sometimes they consume chocolate, but I never have observed any of the things explained in this video. They are healthy and playful. Is there something wrong with my dogs?
The Vet didn't even explain why Grapes, Raisins and Onions are not good for dogs *boo*
Why? Tell Me Why! clips lacks explanation I hope they extend these to full episodes so they can explain more clearly like in CG animation stuff you know.
You may have noticed that you have trouble falling asleep after consuming a lot of chocolate or hot cocoa. The theobromine in those products act in a somewhat similar fashion to caffeine. But dogs do not metabolize that chemical as quickly as humans and therefore chocolate products may be harmful to them.
good point although not entirely.. to help answer you.. dog's systems are different than ours and their bodies are a lot more fragile than ours, and they're a different species than us.. So that makes them very different to us in many ways. In a dog's body, it can only digest and accept certain things they eat..
they should have said something like chocolate has this chemical in it, preventing nerves from working, causing cardiac arrest( completly random example)
eating chocolate for example causes a reaction, kind of like two chemicals for say, in the dog's stomache which then tranfers a message to the brain and it goes from there, it's hard to explain but i hope you understand.
Yea but it is ok to feed dogs food such as melon. Also chicken can be digested by a dog very easily and rice too. They provide great nutriance but brown is better than white. If you are going to give your dog chop meat boil it fully and mix with rice and some melon like catolope :)
