ok i never watched this show, and i'm just curious, but why are these huge metal ships firing point blank, when they're in freakin space. They have all the space in the universe; why are they all about 100 yards from each other, moving at about 1 mph?
@dchris1990 you know this is a main battle so they want to destroy each other not fly in space just for fun thats why they are in line.... and about your silly 1 mph dump comment. This scene is from 1997 and for that time it is pretty awesome and even today it is good. You have to think about the budget too. So think before you post please
@AndreasM100 lol you dont fly in space just for fun... you fly in space so that you dont get blown up by the other guy. you win by blowing him up, not by blowing up yourself. relax, i know the budget was low, sry for expressing my opinion (jerk).
@dchris1990 Not having a go just thought I'd be nerdy and point out, at 0:40 you see a galaxy pass any point within 2 seconds. Given it's about 640m long, that'd make it travelling at a speed of about 715mph fyi, again just showing off lol
If I were given a command of a Miranda class starship i would resign from starfleet. Seriously in every battle 10 of those suckers explode in every scene
Well they were pushing 90-100 years old at the time of DS9. When they first came out, they were pretty formidable ships, able to stand toe to toe with the Enterprise of the time ( see Wraith of Kahn)
@BonScottAC I feel ya on that they got Popped every time only Miranda Class that had some teeth was a Villain in Command of the U.S.S. Reliant...( Khan )....lol
@JimmyJames81196 well except by the time of this battle they were goin on 100 years old. Still good as a light escort, but against capital ships? Fahgetaboudit.
@BonScottAC Well, if given a choice, I'd do the same, if I am not allowed to upgrade the ship. :P No wonder Khan took the 'Reliant' he knew he couldn't win a fight with Kirk. lol
My favorite Star Trek series. The only detractor from the DS9 battle scenes was that none of the Galaxy-class starships separated the saucer section from the hull. The point of doing so, according to TNG, was to make them more mobile in combat.
The Idea was that the non-essential personnel and the civilians would move to the saucer and escape, while the Stardrive section would stay and fight.
That's incorrect. It was to save the civilians on-board and evacuate them to a starbase, The only time it was used offensively was by Riker in BoBW, precisely because Picard wouldn't have viewed the saucer section as a threat. A seperated saucer is easy pickings, since it isn't powering any of its weapons or shields from the warp core, just the less powerful fusion reactors that it has.
In the TNG episode Heart of Glory, Worf explains that "when relieved of its bulk, the Enterprise becomes an exceptional weapon." This suggests that once the saucer is no longer present, the star drive becomes more mobile and combat ready. Now if this was standard procedure in Starfleet, then in the DS9 battle scenes, there should not have been a single Galaxy-class starship with a saucer attached. Those should have been left behind somewhere while the star drives went into battle.
@navycritic That would also seriously reduce the fire power of the Galaxy-class ships drastically. The saucers also have the massive linear phaser bank-along with additional power from the saucer's impulse engine reactors and shield grid. Handy to have, despite the bulk. Also, noteworthy is that those ships would be not easily reconstructed, so the special effects team left them on for the fight scenes. They also needed them for troop transport.
@KJOSCOT I don't think fire power would be reduced that much. The saucer had two phaser arrays, while the stardrive had nine, along with the photon torpedo launchers. The absence of the saucer would also allow the stardrive to divert the power necessary for the saucer and use it for shields, propulsion, etc., offsetting the need for the impulse engine reactors.
@navycritic Yes. It would render the ship more maneuverable in a fight. I remembered from 'The Best Of Both Worlds' that Cmdr. Riker mentioning the need to keep the ship together for the fight to utilise additional power from the saucer's impulse engines when confronting the Borg. I think the main point of my last post was the ease of the special effects folks using the stock Galaxy-Class mesh rather than splitting them up. Oh well. No worries then. Like i said, it really isn't all that serious.
@navycritic It started out all slow, but when the war started, it became far more intense and interesting. I like all of them, except Enterprise. They selected the finest actors for that show, but it was the writing that sealed the failure of it. So much more could have been done, like keeping true to canon, rather than re-write history. Also, making a First Contact Akira-class ship into a vessel that looks more advanced than the first Constitution-class was apocryphal!
I read the comments and noticed a LOT of people asking why so many larger ships are being destroyed easily whereas the Defiant (class) ship is surviving the attacks.
The Defiant was built from the ground up as a heavily armed warship that was meant to go toe-to-toe with a BORG cube and thus, is far sturdier than most of the other ships which are very notable *not* Warships.
Love this scene , the 2 Galaxy class ships hammering the shit out of the Cardassian cruiser , the Majestic , Defiant and Sitak charging through and the Klingons arriving in a burst of disruptor fire! Great epsiode
Intrepid was anything but underpowered...just because they weren't shown in battles of Dominion War doesn't mean they weren't good ships...remember a little ship called Voyager that was kicking ass around Delta Quadrant for 5 years...including the Borg on several occasions. You might be thinking about Yeager class, that had Intrepid saucer section and warp engines of a raider
every star trek fan knows voyager sucked after season 3. come on- 1 little gay ship causing more damage to the borg than the most advanced starship in the fleet?
Voyager never really directly beat anyone. Their victories were almost always the result of some kind of interference. Them beating the Borg was always the result of Luck, Seven, and 8472.
They don't really use fighter spacecraft. Those fighters were Maquis, who are renegade Federation members (whose homeworld was initially captured during TNG and later they were totally wiped out during the Dominion Wars). Not standard federation issue.
I would compare the Federation fleet to pre-carrier navies in the world, battleships, cruisers, destroyers and frigates.
same reason hitler didnt send his finest warships into a headon battle and made them do recon and border patrol, like the enterprise E near the neutral zone
All of these ships probably have upgraded weapons to take on the dominion. If the Enterprise D were still about , probably would have been upgraded to.
By this time though The enterprise D had been destroyed (as seen in star trek 7) and they had moved to the Enterprise E which was a sovereign class starship. so whether or not the enterprise D would have stood up to dominion weapons is irrelevant as it had already been destroyed.
I like how a Cardie destroyer destroyed a Miranda in two hits, yet a Runabout suvvived a dead on hit....... how does the smaller ship have higher survivability than a larger ship?
It seems when the makers started doing the Dominon war all of a sudden the federation had thousands not hundreds of ships and some of those would be desroyed with one shot and phasers caused explosions rather than showing them hit shields.
dominion ships had a nasty tendency to rip through federation shields, making them useless. Those bastards designed their tech to be full out warships, while the federation were primarily an exploration fleet.
Nah, by the time the Dominion attacked DS9 the federation had shields that could stand up to Dominion weapons. I remember the episode where Weyoun and Gul'Dukat were discussing it on the bridge.
the only ship that stand up to dominion weaponry are sovereign, galaxy and defiant class ships. remember on the battle of DS9 it was still a cardassian ship, with cadassian tech. chief obrien reconfigured the shit but in the end it was futile. throughout the war u can see it clips that federation ships get raped by dominion warships cause they are still vulnerable to them.
Actually it wasn't, Weyoun said 'Impossible, Federation shields have always proven useless against our weapons', indicating that it was a Dominion ship they were on. Also in no episode do they say that only those ships have shields to stand up to dominion weapons, you just made that up to reinforce your argument.
honestly dude- did u not see the defiant handle dominion warships forever and u have miranda, excelsior, and other ships get obliterated by the dominion lol?
why else do u think the dominion were winning the war? ther ships penetrate federation shields easier.
I assume that means that you feel that I've proved your point. If that's the case you are incorrect as my original point stands that Federation shields did work against Dominion ships. Answer me this then stringerboi, why would any military put equipment into a battle that is useless unless they didn't have anything better to put in?
you do realize of course the federation had nothing else to stand against the federation, save the promethius and the sovereign class ships later on. All they had are their antiquated, pitiful, explorer ships that was the only chace to save the federation from the dominion warships. Why else do u think the dominion were winning the war? because they were able to penetrate federation shields better. only galaxy/defiant class ships were better equipped.
Of course they had other ships to fight with, if the Federation only had ships that could be destroyed with one shot the war would have been won before the battle for DS9, but the writers think that it's a good idea to have the Federation put ships in the battle that are nothing but cannon fodder just for the effect of seeing lots of explosions. Also I think we misunderstand each other, when I say their shields stand up I dont mean they are as good as the Dominions shields but they were

Yeah, but I'm sure they refitted all ships for combat during full-scale wars. Not just that Steamrunners and Akira classes were built for combat as well.
KLINGONS! MY favorite ST Aliens; they just exude an aura of martial coolness--and their musical cues are so 'James Horner's Aliens' like; favorite part of ST-III: when Enterprise arrives at Genesis & Kruge's ship shimmers out of cloak & Sulu announces: "KLINGON BIRD OF PREY! SHE'S ARMING TORPEDOES!"
I half expected o'brian to say something like "if we invert our deflecter and modulate our shields at just the right frequency while singing 'cumbyya', we can vanish the entire enemy fleet into hell!"
HAHAHA! That's the same formula for every TNG episode. Geordi says "if we modify the main defelector to emit a neutrino beam, we might be able to create an electromagnetic field to...
if i could create a quantum flux in the ionic nebula using a cynatopic deflector powered by the posatrons from the warp core....we can create a gamma radiation burst surrounding the dominion ships.
god, does DS9 have no shields or what. In all the battles I see, chintoka, cardassia, DS9, a few weapons just destroy any ship, as if its just the hull. like in this, the Marquis attack the cardassian ship, hit the hull first...
galaxy class mirda class steam liner class and excellsior class that makes the bulk of the fleet but intriped class (voyager) only one was built before the war started and the other were still ship yards
The class prototype of all ships is the name of the class i.e USS Intrepid = Intrepid class , USS Akira = Akira class , USS Miranda = Miranda class and ya gets the idea
Voyager was lost but afew of its class did fight in the war but few where completed during the war so they werent ever shown fighting. But they did appeat on DS9.
Yes,the USS.Bellerophon was an Intrepid class vessel,it appeared in the DS9 season 7 episode "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges".Somewhere I read that the Intrepid class is an diplomatic ship, can that be true?
Very interesting battle and quite heated. It also demonstrates to some degree the strength and weakness of various starship classes (accurately I think). Yes, those Klingons were determined even at the expense of friendly fire and even at the necessity of using two of the birds of prey to destroy the Jem'Hadar Battleship.
The sheer power of the Galaxy class is made very obvious as is the firepower of the little Defiant. With one blast she tore the front of a Cardassia fighter. The poor Mirandas didnt stand a chance but they did there best. The Klingons like to concentrate most of there ships weapons on the front arc. So them charging in on the Domion flank was really a perfect strategy for thrm
deep space nine was so much cooler than the rest- it had action, and real battle scenes. the ealier shows made starfleet too weak and gay, like voyager. DS9 made starfleet tough.
Such great scenes, if they could recapture this in another series they would have an instant hit on their hands. Deep space nine when it first came out was my least favorite of the series, but ended up being the one that I have the most fond memories of heh. Such a great show, DS9. Great video!

No shields?

They couldn't afford the effects, but the ships were stated to be shielded in the show.

it seems that there are different versions. I just downloaded that song from amazon and it's pacing and pitch were different from this one.

does anyone know what the name of the song that is playing?

I half expected o'brian to say something like "if we invert our deflecter and modulate our shields at just the right frequency while singing 'cumbyya', we can vanish the entire enemy fleet into hell!"
Sisko - "do it!"

it's more of a voyager thing. They have the most techno-babble.
Spikezx7 2 years ago
Aww the techno babble of Startrek it's what makes the series so good cause u don't have a clue what the heck they are saying.
bleep196 2 years ago 2
if i could create a quantum flux in the ionic nebula using a cynatopic deflector powered by the posatrons from the warp core....we can create a gamma radiation burst surrounding the dominion ships.

Sure, they have shields. But there's not enough space between them to use them.
They can't go away from the other ships, because they wanted to block the Defiant from breaking through.
heckauf 3 years ago
god, does DS9 have no shields or what. In all the battles I see, chintoka, cardassia, DS9, a few weapons just destroy any ship, as if its just the hull. like in this, the Marquis attack the cardassian ship, hit the hull first...

galaxy class mirda class steam liner class and excellsior class that makes the bulk of the fleet but intriped class (voyager) only one was built before the war started and the other were still ship yards
robbiedean2006 3 years ago
Wrong! Its Steamrunner class class not Steamliner.
There were 3 interpid class ships prior to the war. USS Intrepid ( Prototype ) , USS Voyager , USS Belllerophon
Trancemad1984 3 years ago
i thought voyager was the prototype
nativewolf2007 3 years ago
The class prototype of all ships is the name of the class i.e USS Intrepid = Intrepid class , USS Akira = Akira class , USS Miranda = Miranda class and ya gets the idea
Trancemad1984 3 years ago
It's called the "lead ship." The prototype doesn't count.
At least, that's how it is with ships today.

I see many generations of enterprise in the fleet but the one ship i dont see is the USS Voyager =( that ship rules.
rysnyper50002 3 years ago
It's lost in the delta quadrant during the war
NagualElias 3 years ago
Voyager was lost but afew of its class did fight in the war but few where completed during the war so they werent ever shown fighting. But they did appeat on DS9.
ds9001 3 years ago
Yes,the USS.Bellerophon was an Intrepid class vessel,it appeared in the DS9 season 7 episode "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges".Somewhere I read that the Intrepid class is an diplomatic ship, can that be true?
StarTrekMarco 3 years ago
I wonder if the name Bellerophon was chosen as a nod to 'Forbidden Planet'?

That ship was Admiral Ross's flagship if I recall..

Shadowstrom 3 years ago
Very interesting battle and quite heated. It also demonstrates to some degree the strength and weakness of various starship classes (accurately I think). Yes, those Klingons were determined even at the expense of friendly fire and even at the necessity of using two of the birds of prey to destroy the Jem'Hadar Battleship.
jkeelsnc 3 years ago
The sheer power of the Galaxy class is made very obvious as is the firepower of the little Defiant. With one blast she tore the front of a Cardassia fighter. The poor Mirandas didnt stand a chance but they did there best. The Klingons like to concentrate most of there ships weapons on the front arc. So them charging in on the Domion flank was really a perfect strategy for thrm
32silvercoins 3 years ago
To quote Worf: "Little"? I wouldn't jack with the Defiant - ever :-D
captaintripps6969 3 years ago
it probably wasn't "one blast" there were no doubt many others & the ship's forward shield was weakened

a crap load of scientific ships that can kick ass lmao!

deep space nine was so much cooler than the rest- it had action, and real battle scenes. the ealier shows made starfleet too weak and gay, like voyager. DS9 made starfleet tough.
TOS was number 1 though.
stringerboi 3 years ago
One thing I liked about this battle:
How the Defiant just streaked straight past the 2 Galor-Class vessels that were trying to trap the Federation Attack Force.

soo many ships such a large scale fight for DS9 haha man i love it this is such a sci fi masterpice

Such great scenes, if they could recapture this in another series they would have an instant hit on their hands. Deep space nine when it first came out was my least favorite of the series, but ended up being the one that I have the most fond memories of heh. Such a great show, DS9. Great video!
