Awesome! I just dream to play! Wonderful and very pleasant! You helped my day regardless of other opinions. Maybe you played it to help someone out here who needed it and that's the only reason. Thank you.
He did say: "the song is an interpretation of an old std! Nonetheless, exclt arrangement DY! What's more of interesting is; the showcasing of a great sounding & beautifully crafted guitar...
I see no reason to apologize to anyone. It was not the traditional done to death version, it was your rendition of a beutiful tune played on a beutiful guitar. Your embelishments were your creation as I play it with my embelishments. You were having fun with the song and shared it with us....Thank You. I'm a flat picker, using a 3 pickup Tele Nashville, customized for me, Chet didn't turn me on with his version but then niether did Mother Maybel....Keep it up.
Certainly beautiful guitar work -- but I see no connection whatsoever between your piece and the classic American tune written before the Civil War and made famous by the Carter family sixty years later -- but maybe others do. (<:
@Mandolin1944 I think I'll have to do a lesson on this tune, play the melody at the Carter family tempo, then slow that melody down so people hear it slow, then add the embellishments. Should be a fun example. On my todo list
I have been playing guitar for over 50 years and I must say that this is the most beautiful arrangement of this song that I have ever heard .....Very Very well done !!
This is very beautiful, I really liked it. But one has to admit it was an interpretation inspired by the original, and while not exactly the same melody, very true to the original song. It's great to see these interpretations, thats what music is truly about. Keep up the good work, I loved shenadoah too.
@Appalachianbluegras2 Well, I did say it was an interpretation! There's certainly a melody here, it just might not exactly match the Carter family version down to every nook and cranny. This is a very old tune, and there are tons of variations. The Carters even changed the words! I see no reason to duplicate what's already been done, this was my own take, and it won't be for everyone. Sorry you didn't like it, but there are tons of other versions you can listen to instead.
@Appalachianbluegras2 Oh good, glad you liked it after all :-) The whole idea here was to re-imagine the tune - what if it was a celtic ballad? The melody is there, but it's highly ornamented, with more passing notes and so on.
@DougYoungGuitar Yes it was beautiful. But I am use to the Carter family melody thats all. It was really good. Can you record a version of their way, but finger picking style?
@Appalachianbluegras2 There'd really be no point. It's already been done many times. You can play the Carter's record any time. Chet Atkins did a very straight fingerpicking version, probably on You Tube somewhere. I don't like to copy others - it'd be like repainting the Mona Lisa. You have to do something different with it - add something of yourself, or it's just a poor copy.
@pburner recording was pretty straghtforward. If I recall, I used a Zoom H4n recorder, with a pair of Schoeps mics, which may be visible at times in the video - spaced out around the neck joint and the lower bout. Mixed with a little bit of reverb, and that was it. Great sounding guitar took care of most of it!
I don't know how many times I've watched this video.....there is just no tiring of listening to Doug's arrangement of this piece. As well as no tiring of listening to Don's SJ. I, like Don, am not necessarily moved by inlay or bling but this guitar is just stunning visually and sonically. Don - it didn't pan out for me, but I know you'll find a good home for it.
Excellent playing, Doug. You really make that guitar sing. I asked Don about all that inlay and he said that the guitar was made to take to guitar shows to show off his inlay abilities. Personally, he doesn't like any inlays but not everyone has the same sensibilities. I don't care how much inlay is on that guitar, it is one of the most responsive and playable guitars I've had in my lap. Doug takes it to a whole other level with this arrangement !!!
@KalleBlom :-) I'm not a fan of inlay myself, most of my guitars don't even have fret markers :-) But Don Sharp sent this guitar for me to record for a compilation CD featuring his and other luthiers' work. Tho I was initially put off a bit by the amount of inlay, it wasn't my guitar, plus it grew on me. It's quite beautifully done, and matches the wonderful sound. I believe Don still has this guitar up for sale at the moment, it went back to him after the recording.

@DougYoungGuitar Ohh I never said I didn't like. It was beautiful, but I thought I was going to hear the melody like the Carter Family Version.
