Oakleigh was the end of the line coming in from Gippsland back in the day. The Outer Circle line (1890s) connected Hughesdale to Collingwood via East Malvern (Waverley), Camberwell, Kew (over Chandler hwy) which was a rail bridge originally - designed by John Monash. Hughesdale station was built in the 1920s and named after the mayor of Oakleigh.
